Apr 9, 2011 - Corolla Wild Horses/Kitty Hawk
Last night the wind really picked up and kept the camper rock-in all night long. We also had some rain. Woke up this morning to 47 degrees and a 30 mph cold wind. It was gloomy and blustery all day, but we didn't let that stop us. We headed out to Corolla, NC, which is about 60 miles north on the outer banks. We took a guided tour in a 4x4 Suburban way up the beach to see the wild horses. The pics will speak for themselves. The amazing part of the trip was that there are about 100 homes way up the beach with the only access by way of the...

Apr 8, 2011 - Ocracoke Island
Today we left early and headed south to Ocracoke Island at the southern end of Hatteras. We had to take a ferry to get to the island. That was an experience putting the truck and camper on that. The island was really great with some "wild" Ocracoke ponies, which unfortunately have been corralled sine 1957 and a really neat lighthouse. There is a grave there of four British sailors who's bodies washed ashore after a German U-boat torpedoed their ship. There bodies were the only ones recovered. On the way back we stopped at Cape Hatteras...

Jan 12, 2011 - The last Night in Rodanthe
We had a great visit with Judy & Bobby Lucas (from Harpers Ferry area and now living in Kill Devil Hills). It was a nice to see them and another great lunch. Afterwards we checked out the Light House at Bodie Island. The Bodie Lighthouse is about 110 years old and is having its 1st renovation since it was constructed. Renovations started in October 2009 and should be done in 2012. Also found the house (called Serendipity but better known as the Inn at Rodanthe) that was used in the Nights in Rodanthe book by Nicolas Sparks and later a...

Jan 11, 2011 - Brunch on Tuesday
After arriving @ "Camp Hatteras RV Resort" in Waves, NC we have been keeping busy with some local sight seeing. No traffic here this time of year so the flow is good. Ed said he wasn't hungry enough for breakfast, so he suggested we have a "brunch". We found a nice local restaurant serving great breakfasts before 11:30 - We walked in at 11:15 and had our brunch. The restaurant also had numerous gifts & nicknacks at after season prices, which is Cindy's passion finding sales. Went to the end of the Cape and asked some questions about the...

Jan 10, 2011 - Cape Hatteras, NC
Monday we hit the road towards Cape Hatteras "RV Resort" about 160 miles down the coast. The weather was really nice and we experienced very little traffic along the way. We choose to go via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel through Virginia Beach, Norfolk area and onto Cape Hatteras. (It only cost us $28.00 to transit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel) We needed to get to Cape Hatteras with haste because a winter storm warning was issued for the area we were driving into. After we arrived at the Resort (the only one open for the winter), we...

Nov 18, 2010 - Waves, NC
We decided to take a short shakedown trip in the bus while the weather was still warm. We stayed 2 nights at Camp Hatteras Campground in Waves, NC - about 30 miles from the house. It was the most enjoyable trip we've taken in a long time, even though we were practically camping in the bus. I had built a temporary bed and we slept comfortably. Of course we took our dog, Mr. Peterman with us. He's an adventure dog, and he had a blast too. We decided we'll be doing this a LOT more. :)

Aug 8, 2010 - Trip to the Outer Banks with some of the kids
We left NY to take the first group on a family vacation. We decided that every year we go back to NY we will take another group of our kids/grandkids on a vacation somewhere. This year it was Jason and Alicia with Devon, Taylor, Dakota, and Tootsie the wonder dog. We spent every morning at the beach and had a great time. The week went by very quickly and it was back to NY and get ready for the next trip.

May 28, 2009 - Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers
Went for a nice long walk on the beach this morning and then headed north to Kitty Hawk. Got there just in time for lunch and went to Five Guys Hamburgers and Fries. We had heard about this place while in Washington (one of the Obama's favourite fast food restaurants). It was the best burger we have had. Homemade everything, great toppings and excellent fries. Very simple menu. A double meat burger, a single meat burger, hot dog, fries and drinks. We had the Little Burger (one patty), one order of fries which would have fed 3-4 people and...

May 27, 2009 - The Outer Banks
No rain this morning and we were out of the campground by 9:15 AM. Stopped in Pocomoke City to grocery shop and than headed south on US 13 towards the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The tunnels sections (2) only have a clearance of 13' 6” so we had to measure our rig (12' 6”). A beautiful flat drive along the coast. Had lunch at a seafood restaurant just north of the bridge and then over the bridge and through the tunnels. 17 miles altogether. Decided we were making good time and headed for Kitty Hawk, NC. We wanted to stay here to see the...

May 17, 2009 - Day 44 - 47, Cape Hatteras, NC
Oh boy, I haven't had this much fun in a long time. We are at THE BEACH and there are more critters on the sand to chase than you can shake a stick at. Birds, little bitty crabs, and other dogs! I hear we're leaving tomorrow and I DON'T WANT TO! I wonder if I sort of wandered off - then they would have to stay and look for me. Darn, Jo always keeps me on a leash when we go out. Guess that plan is foiled. Alrighty Harley, slow down. Yes we're here, yes we're leaving in the morning, but after all is said and done - you've had a great time...

Apr 21, 2009 - Outer Banks, NC - Day 14
Hopefully, today will be our last day at the Outer Banks. Last night was another doozy with thunder, rain, hail and heavy wind. There is no way you can sleep with all of that going on outside and consequently, it was a long night for all of us. The kids do not like thunder or hail - way too much noise for them. We have never been any place where it has rained as hard as it does here on the Outer Banks. I can only imagine how fun it would be to be here in the winter when a Nor'Easter roars through the area. And from what we can gather, there...

Apr 20, 2009 - Outer Banks, NC - Day 13
Today, we were back under a severe storm warning, although it actually was pretty warm. John and I walked on the beach and I did not need a sweatshirt. John wore his rain jacket but was too warm with it on. It started sprinkling just a bit while we were down there, but it was still really nice. We did have a lot of rain during the day. There was no sunrise to take pictures of this morning, so John took pictures of the deserted campground. All day long, the Weather Channel was forecasting severe thunderstorms hitting tonight, but around...
