There was a thunderstorm at some point in the night, but by morning had cleared out and sun was trying to break through the clouds. We woke up, had breakfast, broke camp, and headed to the NOC and Tellico Gap to set up the shuttle. For hiking, we started at the NOC and began hiking up the Appalachian Trail southbound. And up and up and up. The trail gains more than 4000 vertical feet over the course of the section. The elevation gain combined with the humidity and above average temperatures (around 70°F) made for a strenuous hike. But...

Jan 11, 2001 - 1984 November 27 (P.M.) - Nantahala National Forest

From Cherokee I drove through the Nantahala National Forest. I stopped to take lots of photos but the gremlins were at work today. My camera had a 36-exposure roll of film in it but the counter went right past 36. Sometimes I could get 37 shots if I was careful in loading the film; but when it showed 38, I knew something was wrong. I discovered to my chagrin that the film had not been advancing at all, so I actually had no pictures! I back-tracked a few miles to re-take photos of the Bridal Veil and Dry Falls but decided not to backtrack...
