We usually don't have another entry so soon but today was such a treat I just had to share it with you. We left Williamsburg on Sunday, 13th and arrived at our RV site, "The Rufuge" later that PM. We are situated at the edge of a lake which is on an island (Roanoke) between the mainland and the Outer Banks of North Carolina on the Atlantic. Oh, what a spot. Once Corky and I connected with our gypsy souls, restless sets in quickly. The lure of the wide open road is never far from our minds. The pattern has become one day home; next day off to who knows where. Suffolk, Virginia lies very close to the VA/NC state borders. Today we drove to the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway which begins in the north at Whalebone Junction, the joining of US 64-264, US 158, and NC 12, in Nags Head, Dare County, North Carolina. Byway travelers following the Byway’s NC 12 south are flanked by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and Pamlico Sound on the west. The Byway traverses Bodie and Hatteras islands in Dare County, Ocracoke Island in Hyde County and Down East in Carteret County to end on the west side of North River at the intersection of US 70 and Merrimon Road (SR 1300)....

Outer Banks of North Carolina Our son and his family have rented a beach cottage in South Nags Head, North Carolina. He invited Linda and I to join them for a week of sun and sand and to see our grandchildren experience their first trip to the ocean. We went to the Wright Brothers memorial and museum yesterday so the kids could see where aviation all began. Stopped at Jockey's Ridge park to climb the sand dunes and watch my youngest grandson do a spectacular face plant as he ran down the side of a huge dune! We strolled down the surf line...

Jul 10, 2009 - Roanoke Is 10, 11

Friday, July 10 Left Cape Point National Park and traveled north about 40 miles, about an hour, to Oregon Inlet campground. Also a National Park campground. The weather is perfect. Cool enough to sleep, but warm enough for shorts and T-shirts. This is a nice campground with the ocean just steps over the dunes. Took the day off from site seeing, and just relaxed around here. Mar 22, 2008 - The Outer Banks

OK, you can see I'm (Joan)getting tired! Not being very descriptive in my notes here! It was pretty chilly, but sunny - but windy. The wind was blowing that fine sand pretty seriously. We visited one of the lighthouses ..and then went to Jockey's Ridge - the largest active dunes on the East Coast - over 90ft. tall - and pretty extensive. If it had been warmer, I might have thought it was the Sahara - well, maybe not --there were alt of people around! --saw someone cleverly flying a kite attached to a fishing pole!

Jul 5, 2006 - Paris-Norfolk-Nag's Head

I should plan better! Like last time my plane leaves the airport at an ungodly hour and I need an early taxi to get there for the first leg of my journey, Paris to London. Thunderstorms over Heathrow mean that we have to circle in a holding pattern for half an hour or so meaning that I can go straight on to my BA flight to Washington. My bag was not so lucky as it was despatched to Washington! After being fingerprinted and photographed, my connecting flight to Norfolk is delayed for 3.5 hours.
