Sep 17, 2018 - Hurricane Florence and the Blisses

We haven’t written for awhile due to lack of activity. All of that changed when Hurricane Florence hit. It was so slow in getting here that our best-laid plans changed many times. Mike and I knew we were leaving but our daughter kept changing her mind. She finally decided to stay, after we had left with the food from her refrigerator and one of the kids bikes. It is tough for us to say if her decision to stay was good or bad. Ten trees in her yard are completely on the ground with several others snapped in half. Four of the trees landed...

One Day @ a Time

Aug 14, 2018 - Andy Griffith's Hometown and Museum- Mayberry

A brief tour of the Andy Griffith museum and exhibits and we are on our way to Mr. Z’s r/v park west of Columbia SC. This was a very interesting museum and a step back in time. The town of Mayberry was based on the town of Mt Airy. The next time we come, I want to take the tour in the Patrol Car. Looked like alot of time. Beautiful Country.

Oct 3, 2016 - Andy Griffith's Homeplace

Dave changes our water filters every 2 months on the even numbered months, unless needed earlier. This time he was totally surprised at what he found inside the filter jug of the pre-filter. It is icky, muddy greasy yuck! You'll see the picture, but also note this is only 5 weeks worth, due to his changing the filters earlier than usual prior to this. Our move from Front Royal, VA to Mt. Airy, NC was an easy 289 miles! We had no idea "Mayberry was THAT far!" We drove into the Mayberry Campground about 3 p.m. and got settled for a nice easy...

Sep 24, 2016 - Mayberry Days

Last night we arrived in Lewisville, NC to visit Hannah, Steve's cousin, and her husband, Dave. Always a good time! They took us to Mt. Airy, NC for the annual Mayberry Days. This is where Andy Griffith grew up and the town on which the show was based. It was really fun, but incredibly hot! 90+ degrees! Nonetheless, we enjoyed seeing people dressed like various characters from the show (Aunt Bea, Ernest T. Bass, Charlene Darling) and perusing the town. There were cars from all over the country, people who are obsessed with Andy of Mayberry,...

We visited Mount Airy North Carolina. The place Andy Griffith was born and raised. Andy was born in 1926; this town was the inspiration for Mayberry the town on Andy Griffith show. Bronze statues of Andy and Opie stand as tribute outside museum. We stayed at Mayberry RV campsites, Chang and Eng Bunker they were born in Siam as Siamese twins and travel to America as at 17 year olds. The...

Southeast Trip 2016

Dec 4, 2015 - On the road

Despite a horrid first few days with heavy rain and often dense fog through the mountains through new York state, Pennsylvania and West Virginia we made it to Virginia only to get stuck in road construction on 81 for over 90 minutes. At least having the CB radio, talking with the truckers is always entertaining along with at least having Sirius satellite radio we could listen to Christmas music. We are currently set up at Mayberry Campgrounds in North Carolina with full hook ups including cable TV. It's nice to be hooked up to hydro so I'm...

Jul 10, 2015 - Mt. Airy NC

“Andy?” “Yeah Barn?” “Opie and Aunt Bea are on their way to take you to lunch”. Can you guess where we are? We pulled into the Mayberry Campground on the south side of Mt. Airy, NC about mid afternoon and got settled in for the night. We had decided to just hang around the campground today to clean up the jeepster, get some laundry done and cook some fish we bought a day or so ago for dinner. Then we would start our touristy travels on Thursday. Mt. Airy is the birthplace of Andy Griffith, and the influence for The Andy Griffith Show and...

Oct 28, 2014 - Mount Airy, NC

We spent the night in Mount Airy, the iconic town Mayberry in the Andy Griffith Show. We have visited it before but this was our first time staying in the Mayberry Campground. The owner is related to the first known Siamese Twins Eng & Chang who lived in Mount Airy, each married and would stay at a twins home with the wife for four days and then go to the other twins home for 3 days. They lived to be to be 62 when they died in 1874. They had 20 children.

Oct 18, 2014 - Mount Airy NC, Andy Griffith Show

10/17/14 (Friday afternoon) We arrived at Mount Airy, North Carolina around 2 pm. The jetpack modem couldn’t connect to the internet for us to get the address of the Mayberry Campground. We ended up going to McD’s to look up the address. Had a quick break with a tall milk shake and fries…yum. Then proceeded to the Mayberry Campground in Mount Airy, NC and checked in around 4 pm. There were a lot of 5th wheelers checking in and blocking the entrance. Al thought it was pretty cool that he could pretend Michelle was a sport car among all the...

May 18, 2014 - Everything Mayberry

In my last blog, I gave a hint as to our next destination after Raleigh. My question was “What does Andy Taylor and Eng and Cheng Bunker have in common?” Well, I guess it was a tough question since no one responded. The answer is… Mount Airy, North Carolina! Mayberry RFD actor Andy Griffith (aka Andy Taylor) grew up here and it was also home to the famous co-joined twins Eng and Cheng. Mount Airy capitalizes on its connection to Andy Griffith. Downtown Mount Airy is filled with Everything Mayberry. Stores are lined with memorabilia from...

Sep 29, 2013 - Easy day

MAYBERRY CAMPGROUND, MT. AIRY,NC SUNDAY We went, we spent, we shopped, we dropped........Pretty much covers the outside activities for the day. Got up a little after 8, and decided that we needed to take it easy today. After breakfast I put together yesterday's journal entry. With that finished, I dumped the waste tanks, checked the tire pressures and looked the coach over in general. Need to air up the tires in the morning before we hit the road. All the coach tires and the toad tires need air, due to the lowering of the ambient...

Sep 27, 2013 - More sightseeing in Mayberry

MAYBERRY CAMPGROUND, MT. AIRY, NC FRIDAY Our window thermometer said 56 at 0800 when I rolled out this morning. Fall is a coming. Haven't seen any color in the trees yet, not really many leaves down. Had my breakfast and re-filled all my pill boxes. Don't need to buy any RX's today. Edie came out of the bedroom about 0845. We got out about 10 for more looking around. Had beautiful blue skies with white fluffies. First stop was Andy Griffith's home place. A small house, very pretty that is now rented out to people who want to stay there...
