The outer banks is a chain of barrier islands extending for over 200 miles along the coast of North Carolina. The island vary in width as they stretch along the coast. On the northern end they are separated from shore by less than a mile while on the southern end they are over 20 miles. The island are made up of several small towns separated by miles of beaches. We visited several towns as we toured the islands. In some locations we had to take a bridge from one island to another in others we had to take a ferry boat. Kitty Hawk, is located...

Adventures in 2009

Aug 5, 2008 - Ronoake Island

This morning we went to Roanoke Island. We first went to a Fort Raleigh. It had a 30 minute film on the "Lost Colony" which was so very interesting. Then we went to a place called Festival Park. There was a replica ship which the English came over on in the 16th century. They had costumed people on the ship answering questions. This park also had a village with costumed people (blacksmith etc) It was a neat little settlement. We shopped at several shops in the area and we found a little cafe on the waterfront. Oct 20, 2007 - Manteo, Wright Brothers Memorial and Kites

Hello Everybody, Ok now, we'll try this again, we're intending to go to the Memorial, and amazingly enough we actually make it there this time. We decide to take off both scooters because the buildings are really spread out. Now you that know us well, know that we're originally from Dayton, OH, so course we have always taken great pride in the fact that the Wright brothers started in their little bicycle shop in Dayton, it's still there now in the Oregon District. Oct 10, 2007 - Roanoke Island, NC (outer banks)

Finally, it was time to move on to another state. We crossed into North Carolina about lunch time and settled for a few nights on the Outer Banks on Roanoke Island. We had lunch at a 50s diner (established 1997) called Big Al's. The fried main dish (take your pick - we had scallops and fish) and corn bread were everything you could want from a true southern restaurant (and the milkshakes weren't too bad either). We were treated to a few "hons" and "my loves" when paying our bill and we were starting to feel right at home in this beachside...
