Nov 1, 2012 - Kitty Hawk, NC
On Oct. 31, we drove to the Outer Banks where we saw damage from Hurricane Sandy along NC Hwy. 158 and Hwy. 12. There was still flooding in the area. Sections of Hwy. 12 were closed to traffic due to over wash from the ocean. Piles of sand were everywhere. Road scrapers and bulldozers were trying to push sand off the roads so traffic could get through. Some houses were inaccessible due to flooding and/or sand. Some businesses were closed due to flooding. Others had been flooded but had been cleaned up enough to be back in operation....

May 28, 2012 - 1017 Creek Rd., Kitty Hawk, NC
While we were visiting John Jr.'s house at Corolla for the Memorial Day weekend, we had to go see the house he and Robin are buying in Kitty Hawk. This is a lovely house on a creek in the gated community of Martin's Point. They expect to move from Virginia Beach to Kitty Hawk sometime in July. Enjoy the photos.

Sep 17, 2011 - Wind and Rain on the Outer Banks
They said we should have been here last week...The weather was beautiful. Today it is rainy and wind is blowing 25 kts and gusts to 40. It wasn't a picnic trying to set up the camp. I dropped Bob off for his adventure and made a trip to Walmart. I needed some foul weather gear. (A Jacket for you land lubbers). Armed with my new jacket, I took Tommy for his first beach walk. The wind was blowing like crazy and he loved it. He ran, barked at the waves, and tried to bite the foam blowing. I kept him on a leash so that meant I got quite a...

Jul 16, 2011 - Day 5: Hatteras, Kill Devil Hill, Roanoke Island
This journal is being written as we drive along Highway 12 above Rodanthe, where we camped. Last night we didn’t get home until midnight so I was not about to start a journal entry then. All I wanted was my bed! Yesterday began with a drive to the Cape Hatteras Light, about 20 miles south. We had passed it coming up but didn’t have time to stop. The video that details the moving of the light was very interesting. That lighthouse is the tallest brick structure in the nation (maybe in the world; we’re not sure). It was a monumental...

Jun 23, 2011 - Finally, a Week at the Beach
So we head out from Raleigh on our way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, excited to have a week at the beach with new sights to see and time to relax on the beach. I am driving along on the interstate with my trusty navigator at my side, when we the passenger side rear view mirror flies from the bracket and starts dangling in the wind at 65 miles an hour. It is still connected by the electrical cable which allows you to control the mirror so just keeps flopping around until we manage to get to an exit to pull off and figure out what...

Sep 17, 2010 - Kitty Hawk, NC
North Carolina is the 'First in flight' state, so, we drove to Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk to tour the Wright Brothers National Park. Very interesting and the grounds were very pretty. Lots of walking, but Steve and I need the exercise! Again, the weather is perfect. Enjoy the pictures. Until next time...hope all of you are well. Nancy and Steve.

Nov 21, 2009 - Outer Banks Day 2 - Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke
After finishing up the sights at the Wright museums at Kitty Hawk, we headed south and on to the smaller, inside island of Roanoke. It was famous for many things - in the 1800s it was the site of battles in the Civil War, and when won over to the Union side became a major destination for freed and escaped slaves, who built up a community there (until all the white folks came home from fighting, anyway). Earlier, Roanoke was famous because it was the original destination of Sir Walter Raleigh's ships which were sent to form colonies, the...

Jun 25, 2009 - Kitty Hawk - Day 1
6/25/09 Billy and his family arrived in Kitty Hawk yesterday so today we drove down (about 40 minutes from the campground) for a nice visit with him, Lisa and my grandgirls. On the way down, we passed Dennis Anderson's place, home of the Grave Digger Monster Truck . Unfortunately, we were halfway past before we realized just what it was so Bob wasn't able to get a picture. It has a huge monster truck up on its front wheels at the entrance and some other monster trucks (old ones, I guess) sitting outside. Really neat! The girls...my, how...

Jan 4, 2009 - 1903 Flyer
Day trip out to Kitty Hawk to see the Wright Brothers National Monument located in the sand dunes where Wilbur and Orville Wright launched the world's first successful airplane flight on December 17, 1903. Site was really well presented - with stones marking the launch point and the end points of each of the 4 powered flights that morning. Neil Armstrong took a fragment of the 1903 Flyer to the Moon!

Oct 15, 2008 - Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
Tuesday 10/14/08 Kitty Hawk, North Carolina The mosquitoes and flies at Chincoteague are terrible; Cherie and I both have bites on all exposed areas. There are several flies in the MH. We walked along the dock at the camp grounds and saw a few of the famous wild horses across the water. We left the CG at 11am for the 160 mile drive to Kitty Hawk. There is a 17 mile bridge and tunnels (toll for me was $28) that cross the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay connecting up with Norfolk, Virginia. The 2 tunnels under the bay allow for unencumbered ship...

Aug 4, 2008 - Kitty Hawk
We left this morning and went to Pea Island Wildlife Reserve. We saw 2 rabbits and some turtles. About 1/4 mile in we noticed that we were covered with mosquitos and we left--don't know if we will go back to finish the walk (Did buy bug spray). We then went to Kitty Hawk and saw the Century of Flight Momuments. Then we went to the Wright Brothers Memorial Park. This was real interesting and I have enclosed several pictures from there. We hiked up the hill to the momument. We then went to Dirty Dick's Crab Shack to eat lunch. It was really...

May 18, 2008 - Raleigh tries and fails
The Lost Colony - Sunday, May 18 Another windy night, but good for sleeping. There is a slight overcast but by morning the wind has dropped off to a breeze. Today we’re going to Roanoke Island to see where the Lost Colony drama played out. It’s a short drive from here and we plan to stop at the Bodie Island Lighthouse on the way back. We can see the lighthouse from our campsite. Not as famous as Hatteras, but one of the trio of black and whites that characterize this section of coast. It was a nice ride over to Roanoke Island and we found...
