Aug 26, 2012 - Never better than late!
*** "Never better than late!" ... to quote Sheila's brother Jamie. We've finally made arrangements for a place to stay while we hunt for a long-term rental. We'll be staying in a hotel in Ennis, County Clare, on Ireland's west side. The hotel is within walking distance of the town center, and we were pleased to be able to negotiate a VERY nice price for an extended stay. Ennis is near the Cliffs of Moher on the Atlantic Coast (see photo), between Galway and Limerick. It's known for its more traditional Irish music and culture. We learned...

Aug 14, 2012 - FAQ: The Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland?
*** The United Kingdom (UK) includes not only Great Britain (an island consisting of England, Wales and Scotland) but also Northern Ireland, situated on a neighboring island. The official name of the UK is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." Until the late 1990s, Northern Ireland, which answers to the Queen, endured decades of struggle over matters within and beyond its borders. Northern Ireland takes up only one-sixth of the island of Ireland, yet its population is three times that of the remainder of the island, which...

Aug 13, 2012 - You CAN take it with you ...
*** August 12 was a big day for us: We found renters AND new friends! A lovely couple will be renting our Hayesville cabin -- friends of a good friend of ours. We're solidly on track for our mid-September departure. We were starting to feel twinges of imminent homesickness, but this was remedied yesterday by the same friend who brought us our new renters/friends. She gave us a lovely book written and illustrated by a couple who have lived in the mountains of western North Carolina since the mid-1970s: Permanent Camp: Poems, Narratives and...

Jul 13, 2012 - So they loaded up the truck, and they moved to Kil-lar-ney!
Graham and Sheila are off to the land of the leprechauns! In the process of downsizing and simplifying, we discovered a very appealing option for cutting expenses drastically and enjoying the adventure of a lifetime -- a year of living in Ireland! We're renting out our house in the North Carolina mountains and spending some time on the Emerald Isle -- not the one on the other side of our state, but the one "Across the Pond." Sheila will take along her "portable" job (online medical transcription), and Graham will join a pottery guild in...

Oct 22, 2011 - Motorcycle Shows and Pumpkin Chucking!
What a glorious day, Bright Sunshine, and a cardinal knocking at the window! I thought Cindy was softly knocking at my door, but it was a little male cardinal pecking at the window, trying to kiss himself, I guess. The female was down on the ground, looking for goodies. I knew that I was meant to be here, as the cardinals we have at home, sent their relatives to greet us! We were going to ride today, but anything below 65 degrees is down right chilly. We opted for four wheeling and spending the morning perusing motorcycles instead of riding...

Nov 12, 2007 - Hayesville, NC
Monday we drove up to Hayesville, North Carolina to visit my sister in her home town. Ellen had moved with my niece from Florida to the NC/GA border area twelve or so years ago - something that our family never really quite comprehended (including me - I lived in Georgia for goodness sake and I know what these small towns are like). But after seeing how beautiful the mountains are that surround this area (although they look like the Smoky Mountains in the pictures they are really the Blue Ridge Mountains - there was a fire burning when we...
