Mar 4, 2012 - A Windy Day at Hanging Rock

Yesterday, Sandy and I headed up to Hanging Rock State Park with the Raleigh hiking group for two more hikes in the 100 Classic Hikes series (#38 and #39). We parked at the visitor center and split into two groups with Brian leading the faster group and I led the slower group. This was fine with me, since I was carrying a backpack, which slows me down, especially on the steep climbs up to the mountains. Our group went to Hanging Rock first. We headed down the trail, which was paved at first then turned to a dirt road for a ways until a...

Sunday morning we hiked to the waterfalls. First, we hiked the Indian Creek Trail to Hidden Falls and Window Falls. Then back to the visitor center to hike to Upper Cascade Falls. After this, we drove out of the park to visit the Lower Cascade Falls and took a dip the basin to cool off. Then back to the park to break down the campsite. Jul 30, 2011 - Camping at Hanging Rock

This weekend, we went camping at Hanging Rock. We got to the park at about 9 in the morning on Saturday, and it was already getting hot. We first hiked up the Hanging Rock trail to Hanging Rock and stopped for a while to enjoy the view. It was a little too hazy to see all the way to Winston-Salem, but the views were great nonetheless. After that, we hiked down and followed the Wolf Rock Trail and Cook's Wall Trail to the end, then headed back and took the Magnolia Springs Trail to Moore's Wall Loop Trail. At this point it started to rain -...

Jun 8, 2004 - Driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway

We stopped at the University of North Carolina in Asheville to update our journal. However, because of computer restrictions, we can not upload pictures :-( It has rained all day, ruining our plans for a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. So, we're just going use the freeways to hurry towards Virginia Beach -- we liked it so much the first time, we're going back. After that, we'll probably want to see the wild ponies again at one of our other favorite places (Assateague National Seashore in MD). More photos online.

Jan 12, 2001 - 1985 September 14 - Hanging Rock State Park with Tate Family

Today I went with Allen and Bonnie Tate and their two little girls to Hanging Rock State Park. Allen is an avid photographer as well as an outdoorsman. Bonnie also likes the outdoors and she always brings along good food for a picnic. I really enjoy going out with them. The mountains are pretty at this time of year, of course.
