May 31, 2013 - Fayetteville, Friday

We spent the morning at the Fort Bragg Special Operations Museum. It showcases forces from the early 1940's through now. i was surprised that the admission is free, considering how large it is, and all the special effects they have (speakers above us with sounds of helicopters and gunfire, many videos, etc). One of the many new things I learned today was that during the Vietnam War, soldiers wore boots with special soles that made barefoot prints (toes and all) instead of treadmarks, to throw off the enemy. We watched the Band of Brothers...

May 30, 2013 - Fayetteville, NC

We decided to stop here for a few days, as Bill wants to see the Special Ops museum at Fort Bragg. It's only open Friday-Sunday, so we had a few days to kill. We spent all day yesterday (Wednesday) driving (by car) around the Wilmington/Cape Fear area. It's a typical college/coastal town. We had a great lunch, al fresco, of fried North Carolina oysters, and they were some of the best I've ever had - so-o-o tender! Then we went into Southport, which was the filming location for a 2012 movie I really liked, called Safe Haven. It's based on...

May 9, 2012 - Fayetteville, NC

We stayed May 8 and 9 at the Fayetteville/Wade KOA in Wade, NC. For our RV friends, this is a nice campground to stay in if you are looking for a place that is near the highway but also well maintained with nicely spaced gravel lots. Clarence went to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum which highlighted both special ops paratroopers and rangers in all of the wars since WWII. He reports that it is worth visiting if you are in the area. Sandy stayed back and did laundry, bathed Trip and had a little R and R. The group gathered last...

Apr 14, 2012 - Spring Walks in Fayetteville

Today, we knocked off hikes 30 and 31 in Fayetteville from 100 Classic Hikes. It was a beautiful spring day, around 70°F and sunny - perfect weather for seeing spring blooms. We started at the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, arriving shortly before opening time at 10. After purchasing admission, we headed around the Cypress pond to the River Trail and followed it to the Cape Fear River. There were two overlooks here, Paw Paw and further down was River Overlook. There was too much foliage to see much from the first, but we were able to climb...

Jan 20, 2011 - Unscheduled Stop

When I stopped for gas this morning, I noticed that my front tires were worn down along the inner edge. The tread was completely gone on the driver's side tire. Looks like an alignment problem. I can't believe it because I've been "anal" about tire pressure since we started traveling so I don't ruin a tire. The tires are worn enough that the alignment has been off for quite some time. I just bought them in May 2010. Winnie doesn't pull to either side and steers fine. There weren't any symptoms that there was a problem. I'm lucky I looked...

Jul 11, 2010 - Williamsburg to Selma/Fayetteville, NC

Traveling with Carol, Lou & Beau ............ We had to pass some time before meeting up with my friends in Myrtle Beach and Charleston, SC, so we headed back to Selma, NC. Sixty-five miles out of Williamsburg, we had a blowout of the middle tire on the RV, passenger side. Very scary - we called our Road Care people and within 2 hours total, we were on the road again. We knew previous to this that we needed to get new tires pretty soon, but none were that bad, really. The tires are Goodyear and we had a tread separation, but no puncture in...

Jun 24, 2010 - Fayetteville, NC

Since we were near Interstate 95, we looked in the Elks Travel Guide and saw that Fayetteville, NC Elks has RV Parking, so we took off northbound. Most of South Carolina's major highways and Interstates are very forested so I rarely took any more photos. I was reading as we traveled along, but kept catching signs along the Interstate that were very colorful advertising something that was "South of the Border". It started about 94 miles south of the North Carolina border. The signs were very funny and advertised anything from food,...

WE are now at Camp Smith at Fort Bragg Army Base in NC. We have E/W for $13/night. We're going to be here for 3 days. We just found out that the museums that we wanted to visit are all closed until Tuesday. We're scheduled to leave here on Tuesday morning, so I guess we will need to try and come back this way again. We didn't do much, just relaxed and stayed home. (carol) GOD'S PROMISE FOR TODAY; GOD'S PRESENCE "And he said, "My Presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest" (Exodus 33:14)

Oct 23, 2009 - Airborne & Special Operations Museum

Today's excursion was to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville. This is a well done museum with informational displays detailing the history of airborne troops and diorama representations of battles in which they were used. The lobby is open and airy with a five story high display with two fully deployed parachutes, one is a World War II era T-5 round chute and the other is a modern MC-4 square chute. The round parachute represents the origins of airborne forces, and the integration of airborne forces into conventional...

Oct 22, 2009 - Downtown Fayetteville

The first order of business was a visit to Huston Tire Co. for a tire patch, it took thirty minutes and fifteen dollars and I was on my way. Later this afternoon we drove to the entrance of Fort Bragg, the main economic engine in Fayetteville. Fort Bragg is home to the 82 Airborne Division and US Army Special Operation Command, Pope Air Force is adjacent to the fort for the airlift capability. The western part of town surrounds the base and we may get other views but we had no reason to be on the base other then sightseeing and entrance is...

Today we drove the 220 miles to Fayetteville, NC. The trip was uneventful UNTIL... as I uncoupled the Jeep at the campground office and noticed the right front tire was just about flat. This was a very fortuitous break because if this were to occur while towing we probably would not notice early enough to prevent serious damage to the tire. The tire only has a nail in it so tomorrow it is off to get it fixed. I can't remember the last time I changed a tire. The plan is to be here until Monday, stay tuned.

May 13, 2009 - Day 43 - Fayetteville, NC

I get to write the whole thing, BOL, BOL ... We're on what Jo calls a "rest day" today. We left Savannah this morning - not too early tho - and arrived in Fayetteville, North Carolina around 3:15 pm. We've been through 13 states and 3,779 miles (not including those driven in the car). Now that's a lot of good dog smells along the way BOL! Jo says there are only 10 more states to go before we are home, but she told me not to get too anxious yet! On our way here we hit a swarm of juicy bugs and it sounded like rain hitting the windshield....
