Jul 27, 2012 - Youngstown, New York

We left Waterford, PA the morning of July 27th and drove 137 miles to Fourmile Creek State Park in Youngstown, NY. This located 17 miles NE of Niagra Falls on the shore of Lake Ontario. We used this as our base to visit Niagra Falls. We stayed here for three nights. This was a wonderful state park with large grass sites and electrical hook-up. At $27 per night it was a bargain when compared with the commercial RV parks in the area who were charging up to $70 per night. We spent the next morning and early afternoon at Niagra Falls State...

Jul 27, 2011 - Into the Abyss

Down into Devils Hole After our exciting day doing laundry in Youngstown on the shore of Lake Ontario we planned a descent into the Niagara Gorge on a trail that linked Devil’s Hole Rapids and Whirlpool Rapids. We walked along a shaded multi-use trail along the rim of the gorge for about a mile and then we came to the stairs down into the gorge. This was by far one of the craziest trails we have descended to date. There were places where the trail had washed out. There were several places where there had been rock falls that we had to climb...

Jul 26, 2011 - After the Fall(s)

In the shadow of the Falls We have been making good use of our time here on the shore of Lake Ontario. On Tuesday we did a little exploring around the area. We had laundry to do and had heard that there was a laundromat in Youngstown. We loaded up the basket and soap and off we went. Youngstown, as are most of the places we have visited out East, is very old. This whole area around Fort Niagara has been a source of conflict since before the French and Indian Wars in the 1600’s. After driving through the small village we didn’t see the...

Jul 24, 2011 - Before the Fall(s)

We had a very scenic drive along New York 104. The highway was in good condition in most places and the traffic was very light. Sundays seem to be a good travel day when you are going against the flow. But there were no cars to even get congested. We passed through miles of tidy farmland. There was lots of corn, some potatoes and soy beans getting ready for harvest. The roadside produce stands are very prevalent now. It looks like we will be getting our fill of fresh peaches, cherries, and blueberries, to name a few of the fruits. Of course...

Oct 11, 2010 - Youngstown, NY - Four Mile Creek State Park

Our trip from Verona to Youngstown was 204 miles of mostly interstate toll road with the last half of it battling those winds again. We are staying at Four Mile Creek State Park which is a very nice park with very large sites. We have 30 amps but otherwise are self-contained. The Verizon coverage is very weak but the satellite comes in strong and was a quick set up. The park is on Lake Ontario and you can even see Toronto across it from our shoreline. Friday we went to see Niagara Falls. We were going to see it from both the American and...

Sep 23, 2010 - Four Mile Creek Campground/Niagara Falls

Growing up in and around Erie, PA our family went to Niagara Falls at least once a year. It remains one of my favorite spots to visit. We found a great state campground called Four Mile Creek State Campsite on the shores of Lake Ontario only about 15 miles from the falls. It is a roomy campground with a few 50-amp sites, but no sites with water or sewer. We weren't quite level because of our leveler issue, but otherwise very comfortable. On Wednesday we explored the United States side of the Niagara Gorge. If you have visited the falls then...

Aug 25, 2010 - Niagara, NY

We had a rainy drive from Keith's house to about halfway to Buffalo before it cleared. It was sunny and warming at Four Mile Creek State Park and we'll be staying here for a week near Niagara Falls. It's a beautiful park and we are enjoying our neighbors & making new friends. We have to leave the park and drive about 7 miles to the little town of Youngstown for WiFi at the Library and they have a small market. But the supermarket in larger city of Lewiston is farther down the road. We did our emails at the library and picked up our...
