Sep 14, 2012 - West Point Military Academy

Got up early so we could get in line at 9:00 for the 2 hour tour of West Point. Unfortunately, we did not take the tour as there was a special funeral and we would not have been able to see the chapel. So we visited some of the museum, had a Mexican lunch and then went on the 12:30 tour. The guide had been leading tours for 8 years and was VERY KNOWLEDGEBLE. The grounds are beautiful, the view of the Hudson River is gorgeous, the new 50 million dollar library is spectacular and the grounds are immaculate. The chapel was beautiful and we...

Sep 30, 2010 - West Point, New York

9/30 – 10/2 It was two days and a 313 mile drive (SR26, US22, SR453, US220, I-80, US209, I-84, US6, US9W) that brought us from Hesston, Pennsylvania to West Point, New York. The first night we stayed at a friendly Wal-Mart parking lot in E. Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. After arriving at West Point we had an interesting drive through the West Point campus (not designed for large vehicles) before arriving at our two night campus parking spot in the North Port parking lot located on the Hudson River. It was a beautiful site that we shared with...

Sep 21, 2010 - West Point, New York

Since we started this trip back in May in Tacoma, Washington, diesel fuel has varied from $2.75 a gallon to $3.25 a gallon. Our last fill up at a “Mini Mart” outside of Rochester, New York was $3.09, but the milk we bought was only $1.69 a gallon. Sure wish the RV and Jeep ran on milk. After parking and setting up our home-on-wheels, we normally spend a lot of time just driving around some of the towns that we camp near. Sometimes there are “tourist” things to see and do, such as our stop at the small village of Watkins Glen, home to the...

Sep 13, 2010 - Fort Montgomery & West Point

On Monday we headed for the Hudson River. Fort Montgomery was built around 1776 as one of two forts to prevent the advance of the British up (down?) the Hudson River. The forts were guarded by area militia. These men had to return home to tend their fields, so the forts did not always have a large number of men. Several years later it was attacked by the British with a fleet of ships and both forts were captured. Many rebels managed to escape in the chaos and dusk. Several American ships tried to escape but there was not enough wind so they...

West Point, along the Hudson River is a beautiful setting. You can no longer tour the campus on your own so it is by bus tour only which limited my picture taking somewhat. It was interesting and I did get some nice pictures. Hope you enjoy this with us.

Today is moving day...destination West Point, NY. This is the location of the Army Military Academy. Today's drive was a little stressful. We went through towns with narrow streets and one bridge overpass that was 12' 8" our motorhome is 12' 6" that means we had only 2 inches to clear....just hope the measurements were correct. We didn't hear any scrapping or lose our satellite dish. Carol said, "This is the first time that you have expressed stress from driving'" She also said, "This is the first time that you did not talk back to the GPS...

Jun 4, 2010 - West Point/New York City

With the help of an RVing neighbor, at the New Jersey RV park, we found a route to West Point, avoiding the expensive toll roads that surround New York City. We arrived at West Point to find a really good campground, off post. We got ourselves settled, then went back to the office to get some information about touring the area. The young woman, in the office, recommended that we go to the travel office on post to get the info we needed, so we hustled there to make it before they closed. We made it and found some very helpful people. This...

Oct 29, 2008 - US Military Academy -- West Point

Settled in the Hudson River Valley is a location chosen by General George Washington (the original and authentic patriot "George W") ... a wisely chosen location to defend the young colonies from the British Empire ... you will discover West Point. Originally a military defensive fort, it became the first academy of military science in the new United States, graduating numerous "stars" (generals) of the US Army, and two future Presidents. The historical story of West Point goes back to the second half of the 1700's ... the historical impact...

Sep 2, 2008 - West Point, NY

We have all seen so many pictures of West Point, but we did not realize what a vast beautiful campus it is above the Hudson River. It was first a fort protecting the Hudson River from the British during the Revolutionary War. Thomas Jefferson made it a military academy in 1802, the oldest in the nation. Its graduates include famous military heroes, astronauts, presidents, and Olympic medalists. The class the stars fell on was 1915. Of the 164 graduates 59 reached the rank of Brigadier General or higher and include Dwight Eisenhower and Omar...

Aug 6, 2008 - West Point, NY

Today we drove about 30 miles south to West Point for a tour of the United States Military Academy. West Point has a commanding view of the Hudson River from its location on the cliffs above. The site was first occupied by George Washington in 1778 and was considered of extreme strategic importance by him and the Continental Congress. If the British had gained control of the Hudson River it could have cut off the New England states from the rest of the small country and, most likely, persuaded those states to surrender. This section of the...

Things that I did not know: Highlands is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 12,484 at the 2000 census. The Town of Highlands is on the eastern border of the county. The United States Military Academy (West Point) is located alongside the Hudson River here, and the military reservation occupies a large part of the town. During the American Revolution, colonial forces constructed Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton to obstruct enemy progress on the river. The Town of Highlands was created from the Town of...

Oct 11, 2007 - West Point

Oct 11, 2007 This is a down day, just waiting to head towards New York City. So today we are off to West Point. It is less than 30 miles from here and they offer tours. We head out on a different road than we came in on and almost immediately there is a detour. Unfortunately it took us past our turnoff so we end up a little off the right wrong. Not all bad, we drove past a sign that said, "Butter factory". It turns out to be the site of the first butter factory in America, dating from 1836. The building is no longer there but a plaque is....
