Oct 4, 2012 - We're in Utica/Rome N.Y.

We arrived at "The Villages RV Campground" in Verona, NY Monday (10/1) afternoon. Rather than do I-87, we decided to go through parts of the Adirondacks and traveled NY-8. It was a pleasant ride and the foliage was great. Our travels took us past a number of "drop-off" sites that Penny used to take her Camp Glengarra backpackers to; we saw some of the major destruction hurricane Irene did to the area last year; and we passed by Hinckley Reservoir (where we last lived in N.Y.) The trip brought back many memories! We both have mentioned over...

We drove a little over 400 miles today. We stopped at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY. We have stopped there before. The last couple of times we stopped there we were able to park in a lot in front of the casino. When we pulled in there today the security came over to us and told us that if we were staying overnight we had to go down the road to the "High Rollers Truck Lot" and a shuttle bus would pick us up if we wanted to go to the Casino. We planned to take the car and go out for something to eat at Friendly's, but when we got to the...

Big fancy Oneida Indian gambling. Eastern New York state had a lot of rain from Irene so the mosquitoes were out in force. Beautiful campground with shuttle to take you to the casino. 5 or 6 fancy restaurants. We ate at the Peach Blossom with was good but expensive. Did not like the way they handled the money for gambling. You have to buy a prepaid card and then recharge it every time you run out. People were standing in line just for the privilege to buy a card.

Land's RV Trip

Jul 24, 2011 - Verona, NY

We left Denver one week ago today. Have traveled about 1,800 miles to get to this point, experienced our first break down in all our years of motorhoming, experienced some of the hottest temps and brutal humidity all 1,800 miles. From this point through end of September travel days will be much shorter - thank goodness! This was tough on a couple retired folks! AND it feels nice here by comparison. It's only 86 at 6pm and the humidity level is much less. AND our coach was a happy camper today purring right along to where we wanted to go. We...

We ironically had an easier time getting into Canada than we did coming back to the US. The guard apparently did not believe that I hadn't bought anything in Canada (which one of you told him about me?!), and he insisted on searching the rig. I honestly didn't find anything I liked in Canada. Everything was so expensive. Anyhoo, after a few minutes of searching, he gave up and let us through. We spent the day on Interstate 90, which showcased a lot of farmland with very old barns - quite picturesque. While the day started out with rain, the...

Apr 26, 2011 - Verona, New York

Yesterday was a day to run up the miles. We drove cross the top of Ohio, then around Lake Erie in western Pennsylvania and finally across two-thirds of New York State for 450 miles. When we got near to our destination there were serious storms with lightning and thunder. Fortunately we made it to our campground when it was not raining. A tornado had been seen in the area about an hour before we arrived. We watched the TV to learn that the worst was over. We are camped at Turning Stone RV Park which is part of the Oneida Indians casino and...

Oct 7, 2010 - Verona, NY - Turning Stone RV Park

Our trip from Westport to Verona was 206 miles and took about four hours. The first hour and a half on I-87 was absolutely stunning in beauty. There was a very light rain with the sun breaking through occasionally and the foliage was the best we have seen - having the illusive sun out didn't hurt any. We took a local road as a shortcut to connect to I-90 and it wasn't very good. The road itself wasn't too bad but it took you through some very narrow streets in a few towns and as we went through Johnstown just prior to getting on I-90 we...

Jul 26, 2010 - Small Towns Visited

We left 1000 Islands on a beautiful sunny day, and stopped to see some friends from our golf club in Florida who winter at the home in Lowville, NY, Sue & Chip Virkler. They have a beautiful place and I can see why it is their "real" home, having grown up in the area and having alot of family and friends around. We had a great lunch and then were treated to a tour of their little town; it made us remember how nice it is to be somewhere where you know everyone and always know where you're going - something we haven't experienced much this...

We arrived in the Villages RV park on Monday afternoon after a fairly short 2 hour drive from Belden Hill. The drive was smooth and I had no problems with the RV...Sam was another matter. Sam....is not a good traveler. Sam WANTS to travel but...he's a nervous wreck when it comes to the actual travel. I decided to try a mild tranquilizer to see if it would help him relax during the trip...I should have found a stronger one. Although he didn't twist the seatbelt and harness into quite such a mess after a short pitstop in Cortland...he still...

Mary's RV Wanderings

Mar 27, 2010 - Verona, NY

We arrived at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY this afternoon. This is where we spent our first night of the trip. They allow RV's to park overnight in the Casino parking lot. On the first night of our trip, back on Halloween, Carl & Birgit met us here and we went out to dinner. We said our good-bye's to Carl that night as he was scheduled to be deployed in January and we knew we wouldn't see him. Then when his deployment was postponed we thought we might catch him here on the way back. Although his deployment was scheduled for...

Nov 2, 2009 - On the Road

We left home on Saturday. Brad drove until we stopped for lunch. There was light rain and mist most of the way. Of course, when I started driving it began to pour and the wind really picked up. About 40 miles from our exit the wipers locked up. It took me 10 miles to find a place to safely pull over, then it took forever for us to find the 4-ways. Brad got out in the pouring rain and tried to move the wipers and get them to move....didn't work. Then when he got back in, we couldn't figure out how to turn off the 4-ways. He drove the last 30...

Apr 20, 2009 - Verona, New York

Monday April 20…10:00pm Slept fine in downtown Fredonia. We decided to take some of the backroads through the area south of the New York Thruway. We could have taken the Thruway, and it would probably have been faster...and even though the tolls are pretty reasonable, it was a very windy morning. Sherman doesn’t like the wind. Either does Kevin when driving Sherman in the wind! So we took the backroads nearly all the way to Syracuse. It was a miserable day….windy, cold, and rainy. We eventually got on the Thruway before Syracuse so that we...
