Nov 10, 2017 - in New York - Very Cold, Rockefeller ice rink, Macy’s,

Fri 10th Nov - - - Very Cold, Rockefeller ice rink, Macy’s, Today we were warned - there was a FREEZE warning on the TV last night. The morning temp at 8:00 is 40degF (3degC but with the chill factor it feels like -4degC). Normal people stay home and stay warm. So!!!! We headed off to the Midtown area towards the Garment district where Macey’s is. With a detour via the Rockefeller Centre of course. The ice rink was only half the size of the one at Bryants yesterday and no where near as nice in setting. Kept walking and came across a dozen...

Nov 9, 2017 - in New York - ONE World Trade Centre

Thu 9th Nov - - - Ice skating, 1WTC 100th floor Our walk today was intended to take us to Rockefeller Centre, but with a failing memory I had the wrong street and we walked too far south before heading east. We ended up at Bryant Park - but bonus, they too had a large ice rink outdoors. Bought a cuppa and sat down to watch the skaters. Walked to nearest subway and caught train to WTC/ Oculus. The ride up to the 102nd floor was amazing as the 3 walls of the lift showed a video presentation of what was outside at the different levels. 102...

Oct 13, 2017 - in NY (High Line)

Fri 13th Oct - - - NY (High Line) Just 2 days in NY so today after breakfast in the hotel Gotham Cafe we want to walk the High Line. This popular landmark is approx half way from our hotel to the bottom at about 23rd St. The NY streets running East-West are numbered from the bottom (south) of Manhattan (WallSt area) up to the top (Bronx area) way above Central Park. The avenues running North-South are numbered from 1 near the East part of Hudson to 12th near the main part of Hudson River. This makes for easy navigation. Our hotel was on...

Oct 12, 2017 - in NY (9/11 Memorial)

Thu 12th Oct - - - NY (9/11 Memorial) Didn’t wake till 9:30 and went out to find a place for breakfast. (Romeos Bar and Grill) Looked like it used to be a church. Raised platform with closed in pulpit to one side - except that when Ron peeped behind the pulpit lo and behold the “minister” kept a beer keg there with a sound system sitting on top!!! From there we caught the subway down to the Chambers St stop and walked about a block (underground) to the exit which came out in the Oculus a large shopping centre in the simulated shape of an...

Oct 5, 2017 - Goodbye New York and Hello Hong Kong

Woken up at 5am but not really firing on any cylinders and somewhat slow. The other girls were awake as well so that they could head out for their Brooklyn Bridge walk. Seems traffic is not going to be heavy to JFK so we have time up our sleeves and no need to rush at all. Finally all packed up and head downstairs to immediately hail a cab and a half hour ride to the airport. Checked in with Cathay without any problems, went through Immigration (certainly able to move faster to leave the country than to enter it) and made our way to the...

Oct 4, 2017 - Last Full Day in NYC

Had tickets for Top of the Rock this morning at 10.05 so were up and about reasonably early and walked on down to the Rockefeller Centre. No pro blems with any great queues as I think the height of the tourist season is all but over here. In no time at all, we were up on the Top of the Rock gazing out over an amazing cityscape that is New York. Central Park is such a beautiful part of the city and New Yorkers are so lucky to have it. Saw two Chinese couples having their wedding photos taken with the city behind them, in particular Empire...

Oct 3, 2017 - Visiting Greenwich Village

Feet not coping with all the walking so it was an Uber ride up towards Greenwich Village this morning starting off on the High Line Park. High Line is an elevated park or greenspace which was established by volunteers on a 2.3 km length of the New York Central Railway spur running through West Manhattan. Today it is a beautiful recreational garden with seating, fountains, shrubs and trees for New Yorkers and visitors alike to enjoy the outdoors. The derelict railway section had been taken over by weeds when it was mooted to turn it into...

Oct 2, 2017 - 9/11 Memorial and the Financial District

Headed Downtown to the old Twin Towers area and to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Such a beautiful area now with the twin fountains marking the footprints of where the North and South towers used to stand. The names of all victims and their part in the tragedy are inscribed around the edge of each fountain, i.e. Fire Department, passengers on one of the flights, workplace. Quite sobering to visit and wandering around the precinct before our 11.30 am entry time. The survivor tree is a pear tree as opposed to white oak trees planted around the...

Oct 1, 2017 - Lower East Side, Food and Theatre and Food

Feeling somewhat refreshed this morning, having turned off the airconditioning last night and opening the plain old window. More refreshing with no crunchy eyes and dry noses and throats. First on the agenda was a subway ride down to the Lower East Side to visit the Tenement Museum. John and I visited the museum twice before and thought it was fantastic. The Historic Society found an old tenement building in the 1980s and have researched the families they can verify lived there and then have restored an apartment on each floor to tell the...

Sep 30, 2017 - Craft and Food Touring in the City

Late start this morning as we had no hot water into the apartment. Rang our landlord and it was an apartment block problem not our apartment but it was still 10ish before we got out. Today was going to be a gastronomic and museum day. First stop up to the subway and off to Times Square to Carlo’s Bakery. Unfortunately not the Hoboken store but the touristy one where I just had to have a canoli and a chocolate chip cookie for later. For those who don’t know, Carol’s Bakery is the shop owned by Buddy in Cake Boss on TLC. Just one of those...
