Jun 9, 2012 - Erie Canal Lockport, NY
Lockport, which is situated about 40 mins from Buffalo and 40 mins from Niagara Falls. We started our day at Reid's a local staple, it was established in 1946 in order pay for the owner's college education. It became the place to go and still is. Their "White Hot" (White hot dog) with their special sauce is outstanding. Lockport is known for several things: First the Erie Canal (it stretches 365 miles from Lake Erie to Hudson River near Albany NY and it drops 570 feet) where Locks 34 & 35 are located. They comprise the largest drop on the...

Jun 8, 2012 - Lockport, NY - Beef on Weck
We went to Wagner's, a local restaurant known for its Beef on Weck - This is a sandwich made from very thin Beef with horseradish on a bun topped with salt and caraway seeds and is served with au ju. This sandwich was originated here in Western New York and it has it's roots in the German immigrants and is second only to "Chicken Wings". Weck is short for Kimmerweck which means "bun". It really is a wonderful sandwich. It is similar to a French Dip but so much better.

We spent a down day, set up appointment to have our hair done and scheduled our mail for delivery. We will spend the weekend touring. We did see a soccer game out our back window and saw a sunset, not as brilliant as we have seen in the past but very nice.

Sep 25, 2011 - Pipes & Drums
Sunday, September 25, 2011 - It was 60 degrees this morning when we woke up and reached a high of 79 here in Lockport today, clear skies and a beautiful fall day. The leaves are beginning to change colors so we should begin to see some really spectacular colors when we get down to Newport, RI and Connecticut. The campground where we've been staying this week is in a rural, farming community, so there are fields of corn, pumpkin, soybeans and a few vineyards. I'm not sure what they do with all the pumpkins, but you see pumpkins in all the...

Sep 23, 2011 - Erie Canal
Friday, September 23, 2011 - Do you remember any of your history from elementary school or do you remember reading about the Erie Canal? Tommy and I had an afternoon to fill with sightseeing so we took the two hour cruise on the canal to refresh our memories of what we had read about soooo long ago. We boarded the boat and sat on the upper deck so we could have a good view of the canal and the two locks that we'd be going through. As we entered the second lock, we caught sight of movement near the rocks at the edge of the canal and after a...

Sep 21, 2011 - Niagara Falls/Day 2
Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 - Niagara Falls - Day 2: We have had beautiful weather the whole trip so far; the temperatures have been in the 60s and 70s. Yesterday we wore just a light jacket but today it's between 72 - 75 degrees and feels great! We've had some rain but it rains at night so it doesn't interfer with our sightseeing. You really need two days to feel like you've seen the whole park at Niagara, so we're back again for one last look before we move on! There's still the Cave of the Winds that we haven't done. We were given yellow...

Sep 20, 2011 - Lockport, NY & Niagara
Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 - We left Lexington, KY on Saturday, Sept. 17 and drove to Brunswick, OH where we stayed at Willow Lake Campground Saturday and Sunday nights. Brunswick was a rural area with lots of corn fields, pumpkin fields, etc. Sunday afternoon we drove around the area, stopped at a small roadside orchard-farmer's market store and bought some apple fritters, a slice of apple pie and a bag of apple chips. We left Brunswick, OH Monday morning and drove along the coast of Lake Erie, through a small portion of PA and on into New...

Jun 28, 2011 - Is it possible to have too much fun?
This fantastic adventure continued with a visit to Lockport NY to see my college roommate David Root, his wonderful wife Lora and their last stay at home daughter Sara (upcoming sophomore in college). But before we got there we stopped at the Indian reservation and fueled up with diesel for the big honkin' dually at just $3.86.9!!! You might think this a rather high price BUT NY State has the highest fuel prices in any state we have visited so far. Anyway, David is an original BF'er and a great friend to all of us. I had so much fun living...

Jul 4, 2010 - Lockport NY
Arrived here safe and sound with everything intact. Nice family/friend oriented. We'd come back again. Lockport is part of the Niagara Wine Trail. We visited 3 of 13 wineries. Tasted some good wine but nothing extraordinary until the ice wine. It's thicker than usual wine. The grapes are picked after the season when the temperature reaches 17 C, after dark and no gloves. It's on the sweet side but soooo yummy. Expensive but we had to splurge on one bottle. Might not make it home. We also went into Lockport to the Erie Canal. We locked...

Jun 10, 2010 - Locks 34 and 35
Taking a ride on the Erie Canal Thursday The State of New York has a canal system that has been in continuous operation since 1825, longer than any other constructed transportation system in North America. It includes more than 500 miles of navigable waterway, and it stretches clear across upstate New York from the Niagara River at Tonawanda near Grand Island, to the state capital at Albany where it empties into the Hudson River. It thus connects Lake Erie to the Atlantic Ocean, and it shortened nineteenth century travel time from many...
