Aug 12, 2011 - getting to be that time. . .

Friday, August 12, 2011 I have several great photos to display, but the computer/internet gremlins are at work tonight, so you'll have to check back later to see if there is more than one photo for today. We have no phone service anywhere near the campground, so we could not make a reservation to take the Erie Canal boat ride. When we got down there for the 1 p.m. ride, of course, all the tickets were sold, so we had to wait until the 3 p.m. tour. We typed "museums" into the Toyota GPS just to see what would come up, and it responded...

Aug 11, 2011 - up the road a little

August 11, 2011 We woke up to a perfectly beautiful fall morning, low humidity, bright sunshine, temperature in the high 60s or low 70s. After considerable discussion about whose idea it was to not bring a blanket, we finally remembered that – just like air conditioning – our trailer also has heat! When Gaia and I walked this morning I kept thinking about all the camping we did when the kids were little, because I remember the weather being just like today’s. We never camped in spring or early summer because, as Ron said, “The ground is too...

Going North

Jun 23, 2011 - More culture and a Walmart parking lot

If you can imagine we stopped at yet another historical museum yesterday in the rain. This time it was the FANTASTIC Norman Rockwell Art Gallery and museum in Stockbridge Mass. WOW! Rockwell is my (along with millions) favorite artist. My earliest recollection of art was when I was about 4. I would take naps in the second bedroom of my grandparents house in Freeport NY on the water. In that room was a picture that always caught my attention. Yesterday I found out it was the Oct. 2 1937 cover of the Saturday Evening Post by Norman Rockwell....

May 15, 2010 - Herkimer, NY

(click on picture to see larger view.) Our camping adventures started out in Strafford, NH at the home of Larry & Nancie McKeary. It was a quick overnight stop to drop off Shelby for his own adventure. Nancie took us for a quick walk at Northwood Meadows State Park on Friday evening. Shelby, of course, was in his element so we know he will be in great hands and will not have time to miss us. We left Saturday morning for Herkimer, NY. Everyone will be happy to know I didn’t shed any tears or have any remorse on leaving Shelby as as you can...

Aug 5, 2009 - Vermont, Mass.

Wednesday, August 5 Good day, feeling much better. Driving along through Vermont and ending in Massachusetts. We were looking for a place camp and it was getting dark. No place shown on the map, tried to find rest stops, but they were not where they were suppose to be or the sign said rest area closed. So we are driving along and ended up in Orange, Massachusetts, and a High School parking lot. Actually it was just fine. Durning the day we drove through the mountains, and the city of Brattleboro. We didn't realize the the area was a moose...

Aug 4, 2009 - Herkimer, NY

Tuesday, August 4 John drove most of the day, while I slept off and on and just wasn’t enjoying the scene. But this is my home and I can be under the weather anywhere. We spent the day driving and I was feeling better, but in the evening my fever had to go up with 102.5 and I was just sick. We were in a restaurant, and I just had to leave and go to the home. John had to eat alone. During the days travel, we saw the Erie Canal Locks at Lyons, NY, the only one I was awake for, and then John stoped at another one of which I missed. The world...

Jul 28, 2009 - Day 49, 50 Herkimer, New York

We left Truro, Nova Scotia, early Monday morning and crossed the U.S. border about 1:00pm. We had no problems at the border, although U.S.D.A. inspectors did come in and look through our refrigerator. We drove on to Bangor, Maine and spent the night in a Super Wal-Mart. Tuesday morning, we again left early and drove all day through Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and into New York state. We are taking a different path home and primarily driving the turnpikes in order to get home faster. Turnpike roads are very expensive, in terrible...

May 18, 2009 - Herkimer Diamond Mines

We are in the best campsite along the West Canada Creek 6 miles North of Herkimer so we decided to stay for three days. The sound of the roaring water is our constant music. Today we went over to the Herkimer Mines to prospect for Diamonds. The Herkimer Diamonds were created from water and silica and protected in Dolomite pockets in the stone walls of the hills in this area. There are three ways to pursue these diamonds. 1. Using a heavy mallet you pound on the wall, hoping to find a seam and open a pocket of diamonds. Well, Helen and I...

Where is Tortuga?

May 16, 2009 - Herkimer

After hanging out at Lake Cayuga and enjoying the Lake Cayuga Wine Trail, we headed to Herkimer. But first, the whole concept of a wine trail was developed by 16 winery and vineyard owners around Lake Cayuga. They created a map of the locations, held special events encouraging people to circle the lake and taste wine and spirits along the way. The marketing now includes limo service, bus service and designated driver service to encourage tasting and safety. The model of the wine trail has been adopted around other Finger lakes and...

Where is Tortuga?

Oct 11, 2008 - Four States in One Day--We Are Leaving a Wake!

The kids' antics are the story of the day. During this whole trip it was nearly impossible to get them to look out the window to see the scenery, but offer a prize to whoever sees the most different license plates and all of a sudden there's a fight for the front seat! I've never seen so many people crammed into the cab of a motorhome! And then there's the Calgary Flames signage! Our windows are plastered with posters of support for the Calgary team! I'll have to take a picture in daylight to show you what I mean. The signs were being made...

Aug 16, 2008 - Herkimer Class Reunion

Dick's 45th Class Reunion was a blast from the past. Classmates from all over gathered to reacquaint and share memories. As the spouse of a classmate I was able to take lots of pictures, unfortunately I don't remember many of the names. I did enjoy chatting with Judy who worked hard to make everything come together with lots of emails to everyone. It was great to see John but missed his wife who stayed in Colorado where they just moved to. We've visited with them while traveling in New Mexico. The DJ got the group hopping. He was only 18...
