Yesterday we went to the town of Lockport and had a tour of the historic homes and saw the locks for the Erie Canal. We also saw some beautiful Tiffany stained glass windows in the Presbyterian Church. Truly beautiful! It rained on and off so we didn’t take the cruise on the Canal as planned, but enjoyed the things we did. Last night we took a tour of the Canadian side of the Falls at dusk thru dark. We got there just as the rainbow was forming over the Falls. We then went into the tunnels under the Falls and came out on the observation...

During the colonial wars in North America, a fort at the mouth of the Niagara River was vital, for it controlled access to the Great Lakes and the westward route to the heartland of the continent. With the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, however, the strategic value of Fort Niagara diminished. It nonetheless remained an active military post well into the 20th century.
