Oct 9, 2012 - Lake George to Binghamton, NY

Today was a beautiful drive from Lake George to my home town of Binghamton, NY. Every time I'm in this area I am reminded of how fortunate I was to grow up in the beautiful state of New York! I think we saw some of the prettiest fall foliage of our trip today as we drove along Route 81 through the rolling hills and farm lands between the Adirondack and Catskill mountains, and past so many charming little towns. Tonight was our first-ever Walmart overnight stop, as there are no big-rig friendly campgrounds in the immediate Binghamton area....

Aug 19, 2010 - Carousels and Nature Trails

On this fine day off of work and family visits, I decided to finish the carousel tour and look for a few letterboxes. Between 1919 and 1934, George F Johnson, shoe manufacturer, donated 6 carousels to local parks. He insisted that there never be a charge for anyone to ride them and the towns honor his request to this day. The carousels are now on the National Register of Historic Places and the New York State Historic Register! There are only 150 antique carousels in the USA! Last year and this one (I guess), there was a promotion for them...

Summer in New York

Aug 2, 2010 - Binghamton with Sis

Dot, my youngest sister (who now qualifies as a senior citizen in some places!) took a day off of work to come visit me for more than just a few hours! Yesterday, we went to the Hawkins Pond Nature Area to walk on one of the hiking paths, but it started to thunder and rain when we got there! We went in so far as to where a letterbox is hidden that i can't seem to find, but we didn't find it either. When we got back to the campground, we ate dinner and walked around to see how big the place is. So, on this fine day, we went into and around...

Summer in New York

Jul 11, 2010 - Bike Ride, Park visits, letterboxing

What a glorious day this was! I saw the fog lifting off the Susquehanna river on my way to Binghamton in the morning and it was so pretty that I decided that one early morning I need to kayak in these conditions! There was a 5.5 mile bike ride that only cost $3 to register along the rivers and over bridges and along bike paths. People of all ages participated so the ride was at a slow pace with 4 stops along the way so that city politicians and businessmen could advertise their grandiose plans for making Binghamton an even better bike...

Summer in New York

Jul 9, 2009 - Tuesday – Thursday, July 7 - 9 Binghamton NY

This area is my friend Connie Flemings’ hometown. We drove around in Binghamton and found her old house and took a few photos. This area is pretty but not so many farms since the soil is very rocky. We are staying at Kellystone RV Park and Jim is very happy. They have a fishing pond and a 9 hole golf course which he is making good use of. The dogs and I like the large RV sites, lots of grass and area to walk.

Sep 30, 2008 - Binghamton, NY

We had an easy drive to Binghamton from Bennington. The road was good and dry most of the way, the scenery beautiful. Chenango Valley State Park is a large, pretty, well maintained and relatively empty state park. We had rain most of the time and the park was pretty soggy. It is 12 miles from Binghamton where we washed clothes and did grocery shopping. Next we head for Letchworth State Park and Rochester where we will get together with Duane's brother, and other family members.

Aug 28, 2008 - Day 83 - Johnstown to Binghamton, NY

Headed to Jon and Debbie's around 8:30 to pick up the RV. Got hooked up, said our goodbyes and was back on the road at 9 for our 254 mile drive. The weather was crappy - cold and raining! But the drive turned out to be very routine and uneventful. Passed the 15,000 mile milestone as we passed Owego, NY. Lots of windshield time over the summer. Checked in at the campground, got set up and headed out to find a close grocery store. Called the munchkins for our grand kid fix. Headed back to the RV, putzed around and had dinner. Found that we...

Jul 22, 2008 - Back to the Old Stomping Ground

We've had a very busy 8 days walking, riding, driving down Memory Lane. Unless you are from the Binghamton area, you might want to skip this entry, but it will be in a bright color to maybe hold your interest better. We visited old friends we grew up with and went to high school with - grduating in 1966. We wandered the halls of Susquehanna Valley High School, where we first met, and drove around the area. We were shocked to discover there had been a major flood in that area (Conklin) in 2006 and our old school had been used as an airlift...

Jun 24, 2008 - Leaving Pennsylvania

Today we hitched up and headed to New York. Usually I am anxious to move on to the next destination. But today I was a little sad to leave. I have really enjoyed being at Strasburg. I think it is the farmland—that sense of being back to the earth, to a time gone by. Some folks might not find the farm life appealing, but I have always been intrigued by the ability to be so independent. I have wonderful memories of the many, many months I spent as a child on my grandparents farm—feeding the chickens and gathering the eggs, picking tomatoes...

Jun 13, 2008 - Joe's Roots - Port Crane, NY

We spent a day finding many places around Port Crane that Joe knew as a child. It's always amazing how little things change up north. If a building in Florida gets over 20 years old, they are ready to tear it down and build a new one. Up here, they just remodel old homes and commercial buildings.

New England Bound

May 14, 2008 - Departing from Binghamton

The day began with Nadine leading her Wednesday Morning Bible Study group at church, while Mark finished up some last-minute items in his office. When the study was over, the Bible study group reconvened in the church parking lot, where they popped the corks on a couple of bottles of (non-alcoholic) champagne. Then they gave Rosie (our Roadtrek camper van) a proper christening by pouring champagne on one of Rosie's front tires. Then, after a round of hugs, we were off! Our goal for the day was to get past Cleveland OH, so that we wouldn't...
