Oct 29, 2009 - Saying Goodbye To Our Friends

Marauta called earlier to tell us that apparently we were not the last people to leave the Clearwater Beach area last night. After we left there was a police chase that ended in a shootout. Seems we left at the right time. She said it was a lot of excitement because nothing like that ever happens around there. Since Pete and Gene used to end up in trouble when they were together, all I can say is I'm glad it wasn't us! We did more sight seeing today with Vicki and Bill. We mostly wanted to see the Clearwater Beach area in daylight....

Oct 28, 2009 - Site Seeing with Bill and Vicki

We picked Bill and Vicki up about 10:30am to do our usual sight seeing and driving around. We drove around Veterans park and then stopped in Bradenton at their favorite cafe, The Dutch Country Cafe, for lunch. It was the same breads and pies we had seen in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Somebody we met in Orlando told us about a nice RV park, Fort DeSoto, in Tierra Verda, just out of St. Petersburg, that we wanted to visit. We drove around and checked it out and added it to our list of places we would like to stay, if we're in the area again....

Oct 28, 2009 - Gene's Best Man

Our other friends that live in the area are Pete and Marauta Lazdins. Pete was Gene's Best Man at our weddings 31 years ago! Pete is a sales rep in the same line of business as Gene so he has been in the Dallas area a few times over the past few years and has stopped in Gene's office to say hello. Well, the kids are grown and their daughter is 28 and married so I know is has been at least 15 years since we saw the whole family. We did not have plans to visit Florida when we left home so we didn't make sure we had their telephone number or...

Oct 25, 2009 - Seminole, FL With Old Friends

We decided on an RV park in Largo, FL which was kind of in between our friends in Madiera Beach and Seminole. We left Orlando and made the short easy drive to Largo. Unfortunately the turn lane that looked like it went to the park did not. It was too late when we realized the turn wasn't going to work. With oncoming traffic and us in the middle of the road we had no choice except to pull into the residential dead end street and get off the main highway. In doing so, we had to plow right through very low, very large tree limbs. We gritted...

Oct 24, 2009 - Orlando, FL

We registered with Thousand Trails Campground at Hershey, PA RV show. We didn't know what we were registering for but apparently it was for a complimentary stay in Texas. When their rep called to offer us a stay at Lake Texoma, we told them we were on our way to Florida. They changed the offer to Orlando and we said what the heck, we can certainly use some "free" nights! So we left St. Augustine on Wednesday, October 21,2009 around 10:00am for Thousand Trails in Orlando, FL. The campground is only about 9 miles from Disneyland and that is...

Oct 20, 2009 - Surfers and Kite Surfers

Today was really a lazy day. We went to the beach and started watching a kite surfer. It looked like he was having a really hard time and wore me out just watching him. He finally got the kite in the air and we drove down the beach following him on his journey. We finally ran out of beach drive and had to leave the beach but the kite surfer kept going. He must have gone 2-3 miles down the beach from where he started. We decided that kite surfing must be something like canoeing, you have to have someone at the end of the trip to pick you and...

Oct 19, 2009 - St. Augustine Light House

We have been by the lighthouse numerous times but have not stopped. We decided if we were going to visit the museum and lighthouse, today might be our last chance. Gene actually climbed all the way to the top with me. Three months ago he would not even have considered climbing with me (as in Cape Hatteras). We have been doing a lot of walking so I think his stamina is getting better. We took our time and stopped at several landings but I think we did pretty darn good for a couple of old, out of shape folks! The view was well worth the...

Oct 18, 2009 - The Reef Restaurant - What A View

The weather was a little cooler today so we didn't do a lot. We basically took care of the mundane home chores and made a quick run to Walmart. I wanted to go to The Reef for dinner because their advertisement looked so neat and says "dine on the ocean". I read reviews on it, both good and bad so we decided we would go and make our own decision. It was great, the food was good and the view was spectacular. The only thing that could have been better was to sit outside on the patio but it was too cool. As we drove in to the restaurant...

Oct 17, 2009 - There's a lot of "Oldest" in St. Augustine

Since the Trolley counter lady was nice enough to extend our trolley pass to cover our entire stay in St. Augustine, we decided to take advantage of their free parking again. There is no "free" parking anywhere in downtown St. Augustine that we could find. Besides we still had tickets to use for the Museum, the Oldest School House and the Jail. This way we can take the trolley, get off at each of the sites and catch the trolley to our next site. Since we didn't have breakfast, our first stop was for lunch. Gene had seen a fish and chips...

Oct 16, 2009 - Lunch On The Beach

It was supposed to be breakfast on the beach but we didn't get up in time to get to McDonald by 10:30am. Hey, we only missed it by 15 minutes! After driving around for a while and not finding any place to pick up breakfast, we ended up picking up a couple of Wendy's sandwiches and drove out to the beach. We parked, ate our sandwiches and walked a bit on the beach before heading out. I was so proud that I saved my coupon from the Savannah Trolley for a $2 discount on the St. Augustine trolley until they asked for the receipt. Of course I...

Oct 15, 2009 - St. Augustine, FL

We left Hardeeville, SC about 9:30am and arrived in St. Augustine, FL about 1:30pm. It was a pretty easy drive, 200 miles mostly down I-95. We are getting very familiar with I-95. The RV park is okay, we've got a site at the end of the park next to the boat ramp on the inlet. At first I thought it was a bad location but then I found the deck with rockers facing the inlet and a patio with a table and chairs. A great place to watch the sunset. We have the same scenery looking out our front window. Pretty neat actually. St. Augustine is so...

Oct 14, 2009 - Rain, Rain go away!

It rained most of the night and was still raining when we got up. Gene checked in with Joyce and Gary and they had already cancelled the tee time. We decided to stay in and do nothing. After Gene went next door, I don't think we even opened the door the rest of the day. It was basically a non productive day. Well, maybe not totally non-productive. Gene did go online and update my Magellan GPS with the newest version of software and ordered the latest street maps. Of course we won't have the street maps for a while. He had it delivered to...
