In the late afternoon, we arrived at the big attraction for the day, the White Sands National Monument. We are at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert that goes a long way into Mexico. We are in a valley in the desert, the Tularosa Basin, which is surrounded by mountains. Rising from the heart of the basin is a great natural wonder - the glistening white sands of New Mexico, which cover 274 square miles.
