Oct 4, 2018 - Tucumcari, NM - Tucumcari KOA

It was another uneventful ride yesterday as we traversed 255 miles from Grants to Tucumcari, NM. We did stop just before reaching Albuquerque and give the Mothership a drink at 3.279/gallon. It was a little longer, as will tomorrow's trip be, but the sky was blue for a change and we only had a short drizzle as we started out, clearing before we got to Albuquerque. We are staying at the Tucumcari KOA which is the worst of the three we have been in so far on this trip, having side-by-side sites with the hookups between sites and sharing the...

Jun 19, 2018 - Route 66

Today we cross the West Texas hill country. Lots of ranches, cattle, and rolling hills. We pass large feed lots filled with cattle. There is little traffic until we hit Wichita Falls. This is cross roads between Dallas and Amarillo and Abilene and Oklahoma City. Back in the 1800's it was on the cattle drive trails to the mid west. Did not see any falls, but got on Highway 287. This road used to be the principal north-south highway before we had interstates. We wander along it passing through towns with 200-500 people. We decide that if you...

May 20, 2018 - Tucumcari, New Mexico KOA

Gallup New Mexico to Tucumcari New Mexico along Interstate 40 is about 320 miles or 515 kms or about 5 1/2 hours of driving. Multi lane all the way and mostly uneventful. There were some cross-wind gusts that catch us completely of guard. Hence, 2 hands on the wheel. Tomorrow we'll be in Oklahoma City East KOA.

Mar 25, 2018 - Amarillo to Albuquerque via Tucumcari

Our trip from Amarillo to Albuquerque did not offer us as many opportunities to travel on Rt 66 as our routes did but what it did offer was fun! First of all... Cadillac Ranch! That was almost surreal trekking across a field to see a bunch of Cadillacs buried nose down and painted with every color imaginable. Our next 66 side trip was to Tucumcari, NM. This town has done a great job keeping the spirit of the old highway alive. The have over a dozen wonderful old motels that are open for business with working neon signs! Some dating back to...

Apr 13, 2017 - Headed East!

Many have asked us to keep them informed of our travels, so: We got on the road early Wednesday morning. It was a good travel day but we only went as far as Deming, NM. We stayed at Dreamcatcher, the SKP (Escapee) park and OF COURSE had dinner at Adobe Deli. Thursday was 366 miles to Las Cruces, north through Alamogordo, past the White Sands Missile test facility and White Sands Monument (have been to both) to Santa Rosa, then on to Tucumcari. We are at the Elk’s Lodge there and will partake of their fare this evening. Good traveling today...

Nov 23, 2016 - On the Road West

We finally hit the road west bound for Tucson. We had planned to stop in Amarillo, but we were making good time and with an hour time difference, we decided to push on to Tucumcari. The motor home is not running well and we have an appointment with Freightliner in Tucson for Monday, hopefully to fix this problem for good.

Summer 2016 & Beyond

Sep 21, 2016 - Tucumcari, NM

Today we left for Tucumcari, NM deciding to travel all the way through the Texas panhandle. If we stayed in Texas we would have to stop at an inspection station to get our vehicles checked for their Safety Inspection Stickers. Not a good idea since one of our headlights are out and we’re planning on getting it fixed later. One of the tourist attractions along Interstate 40 in Texas is Exit 112 rest stop, which has an enormous white cross and the “Stations of the Cross”. Here is an explanation of the Groom Cross. Oklahoma was very windy, as...

Jul 30, 2016 - Tucumcari, NM

Sat, 30 Jul: Four states in four hours... Yes, we really were in four states today; Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. Of course, we were already near the southern line of Kansas and drove thru the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. Still, we're pretty proud of our gal Carpe Diem. As has been our practice this week, we awoke when we awoke and didn't tarry too long in our wonderful bed. Even tho the sunrise was later than we're used to since we're at the extreme western edge of the Central Time Zone, we forced ourselves to get moving...

2016 Travels

May 15, 2016 - Tucumcari, NM

Who would have thought there was so much to do in Tucumcari, New Mexico!! Off we went to the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum. The unique thing about this museum is the majority of skeletons have been cast in bronze, which makes them last longer then resin replicas, and visitors can interact through touch. A foundry located at the College makes it monetarily feasible to use bronze. One of the highlights of this leg of the journey was a gentleman named Andy Swap, who was the head teacher at the Wind Institute. It is his job to teach students to...

Nov 11, 2015 - Wind and more wind

OK, the smartest thing we have done is to stay here for 2 days waiting for these horrible winds to subside. This is a dying town with some businesses related to travel and farming hanging on. We found the Cactus RV Park in the middle of town which is an old motel, turned into an RV park. Not a destination by any means, but at least we are off the road. While here, we attempted to nail down some reservations in Arizona or Southern California. Both don't seem to be giving us the satisfaction we are looking for, so we'll continue to consider...

Aug 21, 2015 - Land of Enchantment

/// Cactus RV Park Tucumcari, NM Thursday – August 21, 2015 A Travel Day: We departed Dodge City, KS by 8:00 am; our route today would be all on secondary roads. The first several miles we quartered into a stiff head wind and encountered a fair amount of truck traffic, all related to the cattle industry. We drove past several huge feedlots and other related support ranches. We made just two rest stops today and arrived in Tucumcari at 1:00 P.M. (Mountain Time). It was a long hard 6 hours of travel. On the secondary roads, without any road...
