Today we headed out of Alamogordo to the National Solar Observatory in the Sacramento Mountains. The observatory is at a height of 9,200 feet and the site overlooks the White Sands Missile Range in the Tularosa Basin. The dry air of the southwest, isolation from any major source of air pollution, and plenty of sunshine makes it an excellent site for observing the Sun. Taking route 82 out of Alamogordo (which was an interesting road to drive!) we got spectacular views over the Tularosa Basin and the White Sands as well as mountain vistas. At...

Oct 31, 2007 - Petrified Forsest & Painted Desert

After leaving Williams, Arizona and the Grand Canyon area we headed east and went through the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert National Park. It is interesting that every state in the country has petrified wood (which is now actually rock), the national park is just the largest concentration of petrified wood in the country.
