Jun 13, 2017 - Historic Route 66

Welcome to Santa Rosa, NM, on historic Route 66. Santa Rosa is the home of a Route 66 Auto Museum and the "Blue Hole". We have been here before on our 2011 Route 66 trip and we have seen both these places, but there is nothing else here to see. But I will get to that later. We got on the road about 9:15 this morning under partly cloudy skies and slightly cool weather (it rained last night and it was cooler that when we arrived in Slaton). However pretty soon the clouds departed and it became warmer. Also soon after we got on the road, we...

Utah and Back

Mar 25, 2017 - Early Departure

I normally stay in Arizona until early or mid April but I have things to do in Detroit so I left my "winter home" a bit early this year. Josie's husband, Terry, was kind enough to move the coach to storage at 8 this morning so I was on the road nice and early. Made it all the way to Santa Rosa, New Mexico even though I lost an hour crossing the state line. I'm not used to driving straight through and truthfully I missed stopping along the way to explore the surroundings. The good thing is have been on this route so many times that there...

Oct 5, 2016 - Day 32, Wednesday - October 5

Sasha was in need of a bath, so we left the hotel and headed over to PetSmart, so she could get cleaned up. While she was getting bathed we headed to a quilt store. We left Amarillo and headed for the Cadillac Ranch. Just before reaching the ranch we met the 2nd Amendment Cowboy. Just down the street is Marsh's Cadillac Ranch. The 10 Cadillacs are from a 1949 coupe to 1963 sedan and are buried at the same angle as the Pyramid of Choeps in Egypt. They were originally installed in 1974 and moved in 1997. Over the years it has become...

Aug 29, 2016 - Santa Rosa NM – Santa Rosa Lake State Park – Rocky Point Campground

Yet another good New Mexico state park that we hadn’t been to before. It’s on Santa Rosa Lake, which is good sized. Not sure how deep it is, though. One thing I do know – it has rattle snakes. Rog and I drove around to take a look at the campgrounds, boat dock, etc. and came across a rattler crossing the road in front of us. I’m sure glad we were in the truck. That snake wasn’t backing down and I found him to be very intimidating.

Retired at Last!

Apr 13, 2016 - On the move!

Monday April 11 After saying our final goodbyes, checking our lists and unhooking, we pulled over into the line for propane. We hooked the Jeep on and headed east on I-10. It was a relatively short run today of about 180 miles to the Escapee Dreamcatcher RV Park in Deming, NM. This was our 3rd or 4th visit to the Park. It is a nice place for a one night or one week visit! We were surprised to see a couple from VT whom we had met in AL last winter work camping there. They are training to be managers and will manage two different Escapee...

Apr 1, 2016 - Snow in Santa Rosa

After conquering a little road construction, we sailed on northeast toward Alamagorda. We contemplated stopping at White Sands but it was too cold and too windy. We stopped for a little diesel to get us to Tucumcari when it started to snow / sleet. After 85 degrees in the desert, this was a rude surprise. Foxy didn't quite know what to make of it as Joe took her for a short walk. It was coming down fairly heavy but, luckily, not sticking. Nonetheless, we decided to call it a day at Santa Rosa. Shortly after dinner, the snow / sleet stopped...

Summer 2015 & Beyond

Nov 5, 2015 - MORE WIND

From Santa Rosa Campground Rt. 66 New Mexico The plan was to go to Albuqurque but the wind was worse than yesterday. We were really rockin' and rollin' down the road! Pulled in here around 1:00 and Bill told the manager that we were going to go to Santa Fe. He said he couldn't believe we wanted to drive further in this wind. We went from 10 mpg to a little over 7 in the wind so it was time to stop. There's also a freeze warning tonight and we needed to unplug water by 8 p.m. so we didn't bother to hook that up. Will use holding tank. We...

Oct 2, 2015 - Charles Hardin "Buddy" Holly

On my way to Santa Rosa I made stops in Lubbock, Texas and Clovis, New Mexico to trace the Buddy Holly Story. The Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock has a wonderful collection of memorabilia - no photos allowed. The drummer's house was where he and The Crickets practiced - it is SO small. The first big hit that the group had was "That'll Be The Day". Buddy wrote it after he and a friend were watching The Searchers. John Wayne said "that'll be the day' several times in the movie and one day, when Buddy told his friends that they should write...

Jun 12, 2015 - Day 20 June 12 2015 Lubbock TX to Santa Rosa NM

Day 20 June 12 2015 Lubbock TX to Santa Rosa NM Cloudy chance of rain 67 degrees. We'll be in New Mexico today, looking forward to seeing something different. Had a few rain drops on my head just as we were getting into the truck to head out. Our first stop was going to be Costco, yes they have a Costco with a gas station. Left Costco heading out to get onto hwy. 84 going north. The road wasn't too bad for not being a main road and there wasn't a lot of traffic. We stopped in a small town called Melrose NM to have lunch next to the city...

Jul 5, 2014 - Fun in Arizona

We left Flagstaff early this morning and headed east. It's pretty cool passing "watch for elk" signs, we never did see one though. I did see a prairie dog and another pronghorn. The wildlife here in the southwest is so different! It's fun spotting something. We drove through Winslow, AZ and had to stop at the famous corner. Eagles music is playing and, of course, there are shops which sell Route 66 souvenirs. It was a fun stop! Back on the road, we drove through many Indian reservations. So, we had to stop and check out the tourist trap...

May 7, 2014 - altitude adjustment on Route 66

Two days in Lubbock at 3,200 ft. Two days in Santa Rosa, NM at 4,600 ft. Trying to semi acclimate to changing altitude slowly. Santa Rosa is a cute little stop on Route 66. A local resident who owns a body shop does renovations of vehicles as a hobby. Some one of a kind trucks! Finally created a museum when so many wanted to go into his "shed". A lot of Rt 66 memorabilia. Went to Blue Hole springs 3,000 gallons of water a minute with mineral content too high for drinking. Santa Rosa in down in a depression on top of a mountain and gets a...

May 3, 2014 - Santa Rosa, New Mexico

This morning Ross & Marge attended the free continental breakfast at the campground before leaving American RV Park and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their destination for today was Santa Rosa, New Mexico located 123 miles from Albuquerque and they arrived here around 1145 which was about 15 minutes before the campground office was to open. However, the campground owner was in the office getting ready for the day and he graciously opened up and checked us in. After setting up they both started reading and checking email. Ross got a message from...
