Oct 9, 2012 - To Santa Rosa, NM
We arrived in Santa Rosa, NM today and after getting set up Bill happened to check the truck tires, as he often does, only to discover that one of the dually tires had started to shred. After a quick disconnect and drive to a local tire dealer we had the shredded tire off and the spare on so we could continue our trip home to Lake Havasu.

Oct 8, 2012 - Balloons!
It was a brisk 29 degrees this morning in Gallup, but we were up and ready to go before the sun peeked over the mountains. In fact, I took the sunrise photo this morning, which might be a first for me. -- We headed east once again on Interstate 40. Today's travel would take us over 250 miles, which is unusual for us since we try not to go over 200 miles per day. But we were anxious to get through Albuquerque. With an estimated 250,000 people attending the week long Balloon Festival, we weren't sure how traffic would be effected. Since we...

Sep 11, 2012 - Santa Rosa Lake State Park, NM - Our new home
(Ron Writing) We left Las Vegas around noon after one last visit to WalMart. We headed back southwest on I-25 and then south on NM-3 a few miles to Villanueva State Park. Villanueva is situated in the canyon of the Pecos River. Some of the campsites are down along the river and are shaded by large cottonwood trees. There is also an upper campground area with little shade in a loop well above the river. It looked like a very nice peaceful place to spend some time but it was quite hot today and its location in the canyon eliminates any chance...

Jun 6, 2012 - From Santa Rosa, New Mexico
Well good evening everyone. We didn't travel as far today as yesterday but still went about 260 miles. We are in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. We had a very good day of travel with little cross winds, not like yesterday. We saw some interesting landscape, going from the desert to grass lands to moderate 6-9 feet tall trees and back to grass lands. We expect to get into some rain tomorrow as we head across the rest of New Mexico and enter into Texas. Haven't stopped to see any history or sites as of yet. Just relaxing and enjoying the time...

Nov 23, 2011 - Santa Rosa Lake State Park, NM
Another beautiful day; clear blue sky with temps in the high 60's outside, high 70's in the MH. I'm just enjoying doing not too much but the basics. That shower is always great!! I'll head out for a walk later though there's plenty of walking built in to going to the shower building, getting water or paying for another day. This will be my last day. I'll be heading to see sights such as the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park. Then I'll work out of Flagstaff to 2-3 days to see the sights around there. Back from that walk;...

Nov 22, 2011 - Santa Rosa Lake State Park, NM
What a beautiful day today!! Probably in the high 60's but the sun is very intense and warm. The sun warmed the MH to the high 70's and I had windows open and a fan going. It was great. A nice day to wander around the campground, check out the showers [hope they are hot, some places have cold showers...can you imagine?], pay for another night and get water. It was then I discovered garbage and water much closer to my site. Oh well, good exercise. Took the beautiful day as a chance to do the dishes outside and the towels dried in the sun....

Nov 21, 2011 - Santa Rosa Lake State Park, NM
I had a late start to my day; I got up and was ready to do laundry around 9AM but the laundry didn't open until 10AM. Bummer. So I waited, did 2 loads of laundry, enjoyed a shower, folded all the laundry then left Overnight RV Park around noon. On the road, no winds but raining. Not as many trucks, thank goodness, so I made some good time. The area around I40 is very depressing. Many abandoned building, vehicles, ranches....what is the old route 66 is very depressing except for something that has been restored here or there. Reminds me of...

Nov 18, 2011 - Santa Rosa
The wind howled all night long. We got going early and were on the road west by 7:30 a.m. I'm generally not even up at that ghastly hour of the morning....but, the winds were forecast to be at their lightest in the morning. Even so, they were still blowing close to 20 mph sustained and gusts even higher than that. We topped off our fuel in Tucumcarri since we're getting very poor fuel economy, fighting the winds and elevation gain. So, after a 160 mile day, we called it quits at Santa Rosa and checked in at the campground to relax for the...

Oct 6, 2011 - Santa Rosa, NM
We're in New Mexico and Arizona is just next door! It is blowing a gale outside right now. About 40mph. We came in early today knowing strong winds were in the forecast. We took a short trip 10 miles south of here to Puerto de Luna, an historic town established in the 1860s. It is said that Billy the Kid frequently visited his friend, Alexander Grzelachowski, a Civil War chaplain who had a general store here. Puerto de Luna was the Guadalupe County Seat for approximately 12 years. Then the first railway was built through NE New Mexico...

Sep 25, 2011 - Westward HOooo!
/// Santa Rosa Campground Santa Rosa, NM // Sunday – September 25, 2011 Low Temperature: 72 degrees High Temperature: 92 degrees Humidity: 10% A Travel Day: We pulled out of Abilene by 7:30 AM - headed west on I-20. Road conditions were great and traffic was very light. I did come up on a convoy of oversize vehicle loads. I had to exercise some patience overtaking the convoy but once clear we made very good time. Nancy received a text message from Leana informing us that they actually left Abilene at 5:00 AM for their big journey to North...

Sep 24, 2011 - Hot Hot Hot In Santa Rosa, New Mexico
We stopped for the night at the Santa Rosa Campground. It was pushing 90 degrees when we pulled in around 3:30pm. The campground pool was closed for the season so no relief there. We just turned on the AC and watched the TV. After the sun went down it was nice so we went for a walk around the campground. The campground was right on historic Route 66. We filled up the truck and the mileage was right on 82,000 which means we have now passed the 9,000 mile mark on this trip. Tomorrow we will be in Albuquerque. We are attending the annual...

Sep 20, 2011 - Santa Rosa, New Mexico
It was another beautiful day on route 66. We managed to stop at two quilt shops this AM. Need to find a couple of breweries for Jim. Did get back to the airport to see if there was any sign of the old base. Everyone we talked to said it was gone! So we headed out on the road again. Stopped at the Big Texan, famous steakhouse along the route. 72 oz steak is free if eaten within 1 hour. Really cool place, but needless to say, it was too early for lunch. Took lots of pictures and headed out again. Headed thru part of Amarillo, then on to the...
