Feb 16, 2013 - New Mexico Fires 2012

The worst fires in New Mexico was last year 2012. The fire was started by a lightning strike in a meadow. A government agency made the decision to let it burn as they thought it would burn out quickly. It did not. I understand the congressman came and really got upset with the agency, but doubt if they ever did anything. The trees are lost and the wild animals will have to find another place to live for a few years. For additional information on New Mexico's biggest fire Click HERE and Click HERE It is always a little depressing to see fire...

May 6, 2012 - Ruidoso

Headed north from Cloudcroft through the Mescalero Apache Reservation to the northern side of the Lincpln National Forest. We are staying at Along the River RV Park. We are camped alongside the Rio Bonito. Took a scenic drive along the Billy the Kid Scenic Byway from Alto to Capitan, home of Smokey Bear. It was his 68th birthday and the town was celebrating even though the real bear died somed time ago. Still, the town has a park and museum dedicated to the icon. From there we drove to the Historic Fort Stanton, established in 1855 and...

Jun 7, 2009 - Ruidoso, NM

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in New Mexico on our Westward toward California. We were able to stay in Ruidoso, NM up in the Mountains at 5,500 feet and it was warm during the Day and Cool at night, just perfect for sleeping with the windows open. We tried to pick a central spot to enjoy day trips from. We spent a day down in Roswell at the UFO Museum and touring their great little town. Also we caught up with our dear friends Sam & Mary Ellen who now live in Las Cruces, NM. They have a wonderful home and we always enjoy their company over...

May 15, 2009 - Go West Young Man....

We left Florida on Sunday, May 9 with our sights set on Montana. Our plans are to take our time getting there and spend most of the summer and fall in Montana. Rick applied for a Big Game Hunting License and was drawn so we will stay in Montana until right before Thanksgiving. Our first day was full of driving, driving and more driving. Rick wanted to get to the western side of Houston, Texas to avoid the Monday morning traffic so we drove over 800 miles that first day. We spent the night in a Wal-Mart parking lot (along with several other...

May 13, 2009 - New Found RV Friends

After enduring the heat of the New Mexico desert we headed up into the mountains and spent 3 nights in Ruidoso, NM, in the Lincoln National Forest. Here we met Steve and Dan, two retired school teachers from Southern California. Interestingly, our friends that we met at the RV park in Sedona were also two retired school teachers. This RV park was quite idyllic. Our site was located on a wooded hillside and had a wooden deck extending out away from were we parked the RV. Basically, it was out first chance to just relax and not be going from...

Oct 2, 2008 - Happy Birthday, Howard!

I begged and pleaded to take a day "off" so I could do "wifely" things, bake a birthday cake, clean and cook, but oh no!, we needed to drive almost 200 miles covering the outlying areas around Alamogordo! Taking off from our Highway 54 location, our first "drive by" was Cloudcroft, 9000 feet above Stress Level, at an elevation gain of almost 5,000 feet in 16 miles. This charming mountain village offers a wide variety of outdoor opportunities, scenic vistas, and historic sites. An added benefit, the Aspens were golden! We turned off on...

Sep 19, 2008 - Shakedown cruise - Ruidoso, NM

Stayed at the Circle B campground just west of downtown. The owner, 'Rip' is EXCELLENT. He gave us two sites for the price of one so we'd have a place to park our truck. We happened to be in town during the Golden Aspen motorcycle (mostly Harley Davidson) rally. There were an estimated 30,000 bikes in town for the weekend. Unless you've seen something like this, there is no way to describe the sights, sounds and smells. It was great - there were bikes everywhere. It drizled rain most of Saturday which significantly dampened the biker's...

Ramtough's Travels

Jun 19, 2008 - Ruidoso, NM

Headed up Hwy 17N thru Pecos, Carlsbad and Roswell. What?? no fuel stops?? after sweating heavily thru the "practice" mountains (we are going to Colorado next), we barely made it to Ruidoso. We filled up over 32 gallons of fuel in a tank that holds 34!!! We found a rv spot at Inn of the Mountain Gods. Kinda cheesy and basic, but it had full hook-ups. Will stay for 2 nights. Headed straight over to the casino. Ate at the buffet and played for a while. We discovered we are now in the Mountain time zone. Had a bit of a lazy day, slept in, ate...

Ruidoso What a beautiful drive today from El Paso to Ruisdoso. Most of the day was spent driving through the desert and then minute by minute the road began to climb higher and higher….cactus began to be replaced by pine….sand dunes by rolling hills….pine trees by forests and hills by mountains, into Mescalero Apache country. Through the tidy and beautiful town of Tularosa and on into Ruidoso home of the richest quarter horse race in the country with a 2 million dollar purse. Any of you who have seen the movie Casey’s Shadow with Walter...

Mar 4, 2008 - Ski Apache

Carla here--we drove up to Sierra Blanca above Ruidoso and went skiing today. We skied on the Mescalero Apache Reservation at Ski Apache--got cool sweatshirts with the Apache logo on it too. Pete is the only one of us who has ever skied but he hurt his knee playing racquetball so he was the photographer today. Wes, Grace and Lexi took lessons for snow boarding. I took lessons for skiing. I fell about four times. The kids tell me they fell about 50 times (an exaggeration, I think). We spent around 1.5 hours in lessons, ate lunch, then...

The Nelson's Travels

Nov 23, 2007 - Ruidoso, New Mexico

Ruidoso is a small ski town located at about 6800 ft elevation in the New Mexico mountains, is about 190 miles from Albuquerque and right on my way to Kerrville, Texas. It was a very pleasant drive. Jeff, Linda, Valerie, Kylie and Hayley rode with me in the Dutch Star and Damon and Janet followed in Valerie's Tahoe. This was the first time that I've had more than one passenger with me and it was a lot of fun. The kids seemed to have a good time and the company made for a very pleasant drive. Fortunately the snow didn't arrive until well...
