There are 3 places to drive to on the borders of the National Monument besides the Visitor Center and each has at least one trail to walk. I chose to go to the area called Boca Negra Canyon and by walking 2 of those 3 trails, i got a flavor of what this park is all about. There are over 25,000 petroglyphs here in the West Mesa of ancient volcanoes, making this the largest concentration of petroglyphs in North America. Oct 25, 2009 - Petroglyph National Monument

Hiked the JA, Black and Vulcan volcanoes in the Petroglyph National Monument. The 3 mile roundtrip hike was fairly easy except the climbs up the volcanoes, which was difficult since we haven’t adjusted to the altitude fully. There was a great overlook of downtown Albuquerque from the top of the JA volcano. The volcanos we saw here were formed the same way as the Hawaiian islands - they are formed by a fissure eruption meaning the magma rose along thin cracks in the Earth’s crust - on most volcanos the magma rises thru a central vent. Sep 22, 2006 - Petroglyph National Monument

This morning after a late breakfast, I visited Petroglyph National Monument on the northwest side of Albuquerque. I hiked three trails in the Boca Negra Canyon, all of them short. Boca Negra Canyon is considered the birthplace of Petroglyph National Monument. In the 1960s it was known as Indian Petroglyph State Park.
