May 17, 2019 - Boom and Bust and Boom Cycle

Boom and Bust. You might have heard the term when referring to the ups and downs many towns face, both today and in the past. Las Vegas, New Mexico is one example of a boom-and-bust town. A spur of the Santa Fe Trail, which started from Independence, Missouri, passed through this town making it a prosperous supply town for the wagons passing through. Then, the railroad arrived in the late 1800s bringing wealthy Easterners to the area. The Castaneda hotel was built along these tracks to accommodate the travelers. The first “Harvey Girls” was...

May 10, 2019 - Traveling Along I-25

We haven’t gone very many miles since leaving Benson. After our four day stay at Caballo Lake, we continued 90 miles to Socorro, New Mexico. People usually come to this small town since it is near the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The Bosque is a popular birding migration area. However, the birds are long gone – they are usually here from November through January. We stopped here because I wanted to visit another attraction called the Very Large Array (VLA) The VLA are a series of 27 radio antennas located in the remote...

Happy Halloween! *Today we made postcards ordered from Walgreens. Sent them out. *We went to Walmart in Las Vegas then drove over one hour to Santa Fe. *We went to A Diners Drive in and Dives restaurant named Casa Chimayo. *I generously give it two stars out of five. So disappointing!! Best part was the company ❤️ *We drove back to Romeroville where KOA is and I did laundry. After laundry I was cranky.

Oct 30, 2018 - A day in Vegas NM

Today was a good day, we were heading to Santa Fe and stopped in Pecos NM. There we learned a lot about the Peco Pueblo Indians. It was a national park and a good walk for all of us (including Brady). We walked the dwellings from the 1500 and 1600’s. It was pretty cool. I climbed down into one of the ceremonial kivas. It was pretty cool after I got my glasses to adjust. Mom and Brady had a blast with the place too. It was a 1.25 mile walk, but it was leisurely done. Brady did have couple bad luck moments with the goat head burrs and the...

Oct 29, 2018 - Vegas baby!! New Mexico!!

*We got on the road about 9:30. *Felt like a longer ride than it was. We drove for 4 hours. *Poor dad has to white knuckle it now since we got the new tires the trailer/truck sways!! *We’re at KOA. We have to be very careful not to let Brady go off the roadways. Sharp stickers and burls get in her feet. And we track them in. They really suck! *We unhooked and went to Old Town Las Vegas. Super cute Old Town from 1880. *I made dad steak and roasted potatoes/beets, I had egg burrito.

Apr 10, 2018 - Tuesday Las Vegas NM

Time for us to depart Gallup NM and head north. The drive was great, sun was shining and no wind blowing. Once we passed Albuquerque and got on I-25 North a person knows why you be sure to have a full tank of gas. Las Vegas was established in 1835 after a group of settlers received a land grant from the Mexican government. The town was laid out in the traditional Spanish Colonial style, with a central plaza surrounded by buildings which could serve as fortifications in case of attack. Las Vegas soon prospered as a stop on the Santa Fe...

2018 Winter

Jan 28, 2017 - New Mexico

Ruidoso is such a lot like Banff. Even though there isn't any snow in the city you can see the white mtn tops and most of the people are there for the skiing. There is a couple of blocks that are all small shops with lots of people on the streets. We didn't leave till after dinner and went to Las Vegas through Santa Rosa. We first went to the historic downtown and dale and I separated for awhile so I could at least go into a store. There were a lot of the stores closed either because there aren't open sat or close early. We got a room at...

Oct 6, 2016 - Las Vegas, NM - Trailer is Repaired & We're Heading South

(Ron Writing) The parts for the trailer suspension arrived about 1 PM yesterday, Oct.5th, and after some difficulty getting the new bushings in the spring eyes, the mechanics finished the job at about 4 PM. We decided to do a little driving yet rather than spend another night in Cheyenne. It got down to 34° during the night and snow flurries are in the forecast. We headed south on I-25 and arrived in Monument, CO at about 7 PM. It got down to 34° again overnight. It was cold, cloudy, and raining this morning when we awoke. We decided to...

Sep 30, 2016 - Going to Las Vegas, New Mexico

We set the alarm for 6:30 to get up, but woke up at 6am with the sounds of some motorhomes already leaving. A bunch of the people, something like 40 RV's, are heading down to Albuquerque for the Balloon Festival and they have to leave early to get down there on time. Others are heading out on a Grand Circle tour of Utah parks and they left. Others are going to slowly head home and some have a long distance to go to get there. We had RV's from every state except Hawaii (although we do have a member living there) and a lot are heading home....

Wyoming Wanderings

Oct 8, 2015 - Las Vegas, NM

We headed back up Hwy 285 to Hwy 54 to Hwy 219 to Hwy 84 to Las Vegas KOA. Not much choice of RV parks in this area. With recent thunderstorms and rain and the park being on the hillside, it was a challenge getting our rig into our site. Roads were almost non-existent and deeply rutted. Once in our site, which was amongst the trees and lovely, we were happier. Let me put that another way, Dale was happier. The water pressure here was terrible and very difficult to take a shower, but we discovered this whole section of New Mexico has very...

Oct 2, 2014 - Going to Las Vegas, NM

Las Vegas KOA, 76 County Rd A 25A, Las Vegas, NM 87701. 505-454-0180 We traveled down to New Mexico on I-25 alot of uphill climbing. Along the way we saw dozens of prong horn antelope. The new campground is very nice. It sits on a hill. Once again, the sites are packed dirt or clay rather than gravel with many of them pull-throughs. Each site has a little enclosed area with a glider, table and firepit. There is a cafe on site which serves breakfast and dinner. The food was very good. We will just be here for one night then head to...
