Jul 20, 2010 - Moving West
Today was a 200 mile travel day. After we arrived in Gallup and set up at the USA RV park, one of the best we have stayed at,--another RVer came by to introduce himself. It was Roland Barrow who was working in the area but lived near Nixon, Texas before taking this job. The most amazing thing was that he bought his Ford pickup in Nixon from Caraway Ford! I called my mother today and told her about it.--It is sure a small world.(Nixon, Texas, is where Tim was born and grew up)

Jul 11, 2010 - Gallup, NM
We are en route between the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Santa Fe. Our campground tonight sits between I-40 and the historic Route 66. It is a bit noisy so we are quite happy to have opted for a cabin. Montana may be "big sky country" but I would have to say that the vistas in Arizona are even wider. Today we watched rain fall 10, 20, perhaps 50 miles away from us. At times we saw spectacular lightening and even came through a bit of rain ourselves. Once again the temperatures varied widely from 100 degrees down to about 70, again...

Jul 5, 2010 - Canyon de Chelley
We had another day to kill while waiting on a solution to our engine problem with the Dutch Star. So, we decided to take the 97 mile drive out to Canyon de Chelley and do some exploring of the area around Gallup. We made a full day of it. The drive was nice on Hwy 264 and then 191. Good roads and beautiful scenery. Upon arriving at Canyon de Chelley we stopped in at the visitor center. Cottonwood campground is just below the visitor center and is run by the National Park Service. The park is open year round, no reservations. Restrooms, but...

Jul 5, 2010 - White House Trail & Ruins
The other part of our lemon meringue day was the 2.5 mile hike down into the canyon to the White House Ruins. It was a 600 foot drop in elevation with the trail switch backing many times right along the rock wall edge. The last third of the trail was on the canyon floor, crossing Chinle Wash and then there were the White House Ruins! The ruins were built not by the Navajo, but by the Puebloan people. They occupied it about 1,000 years ago. WHR gets it name from the white wall that is covered in white plaster in the upper house of the ruin....

Jul 4, 2010 - Red Rock Park, Trails and More...
Today we decided to make lemonade out of lemons and drove to Red Rock Park on the eastern side of Gallup, NM. It had been recommended to us as a pretty special place, and boy were they right about that. We walked Church Rock Trail which is about a 3 or 4 mile walk thru some very beautiful country. It reminds me a lot of the Moab, Utah area and both Nancy and I really enjoyed this 1 1/2 hour walk. On the way down we encountered a large herd of goats being herded by a shepherd lady and a bunch of herd dogs. All different size and colored...

Jul 3, 2010 - No Resolution Yet. Still in Gallup, NM
We've moved to J & J Truck Service which is only about 3 miles from where we were at Action Auto & Truck Repairs. They have the same computer here that Cummins would have at their shops and the owner Jim and Quinn his lead mechanic and computer guru have been working so far unsuccessfully to resolve our problem. If they can't resolve it soon we'll have to be towed to the Cummins shop in Albuquerque. Hopefully that won't be necessary. Coach Net, our towing service, has been quite impressive and helpful so far. They've paid for the 2 tows...

Jul 1, 2010 - Still Stuck in Gallup, NM
I'm not often surprised anymore but yesterday I was surprised in a most pleasant way. The people at Action Auto & Truck Service spent a whole lot of time yesterday installing the new oil pressure sensor in the Dutch Star. This turned out to be a much more involved problem than they at first thought. They had to remove the starter to get to it, and then they found out that the replacement part overnited by Cummins was the wrong part. Rodney, the owner of the business, scrambled around and found the right part in Albuquerque. His son,...

Jun 30, 2010 - Exploring Gallup, N.M.
Today as we waited for our oil pressure sensor part from Phoenix, I took the time to run into town to send somethings out at the post office and check out town. The Navajo Indian culture is very prevalent all around Gallup. Very beautiful art work & murals throughout town. This town must be a hub for the trains, as it has a lot of trains running right through it day and night. It isn't bothersome at night, you just make note of it and sleep on. I was looking for a good place to take a long walk, but didn't find a suitable place. I so need a...

Jun 29, 2010 - On the Road Again!!
We left Gold Canyon at about 8:30 heading toward the Elks Club in Cortez, CO where we were going to spend the night until events changed that plan. More on that later. The drive down into and back out of Salt River Canyon was interesting and quite beautiful. Rt. 60 is a fine road but became quite twisty and at times steep going down to the river and then back up the other side. It's really quite a spectacular place with lots of view points along the way. I turned the Dutch Star over to Nancy when we turned onto Rt 77 and proceeded to take...

Jun 5, 2010 - First Night
Well, we finally left LA a little after noon today. Right as I was hooking up, a clearance investigator came to talk to us about one of the neighbors, I am really glad Susan walked off with her because I was having trouble with the hitch and had no desire in talking with her. The four and one half hour trip to Gallup was uneventful, except for the usual white knuckle driving through Albuquerque and down I-40 with all the constant construction. The RV park we are in is really nice. This is good since I hooked up the extension cord, pluged...
