Aug 25, 2012 - Clayton, NM
Saturday morning we left for Clayton, NM. We took I-25 south until we passed through the mountain community of Raton and then we turned onto US 87. A VERY windy US 87! It was a rough drive for a while and then the winds finally calmed down. Clayton wasn’t much of a town, but that was okay, as it was only a one night stop. We had dinner at home and just relaxed at the RV Park…the only RV park in town. By the evening, the RV park was pretty full, as we weren’t the only ones who were staying here over night. Tomorrow… on to Amarillo for one...

May 27, 2012 - Nice drive
Tecolote Cafe, awesome breakfast place in Santa Fe! We will be back for more sometime! While in town, we took the opportunity to shop Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, and then discovered sand was lodged by the glass and was scratching the window. So, we stopped to wash the car. We decided to drive part of the high road to Taos and then head for Las Vegas. A front had blown through so the sky was clear, heat was gone, but the wind was still high and it was to get to 38 degrees by morning, so at Las Vegas we decided to keep going and stay in a...

Nov 10, 2011 - Farewell Colorado, Hello New Mexico!
So we left Denver day before yesterday and we are now in Amarillo Texas! Much warmer here...like it's not going to freeze tonight! Yay! We are on a terrible wifi connection so I'm having a bad time trying to add pictures to this edition of MyTripJournal so am going to sign off for tonight. Maybe tomorrow! Now settled in Fort Worth so I can catch up on the past few days of travel. We traveled from Denver south on Interstate 25 Colorado Springs, Pueblo then into New Mexico at Raton. The terrain is rolling plains with mountains off to the...

May 25, 2010 - A sad day for us
We had a long, and sad day today. Started out from Kaw City, OK at 7:00 AM. About 11:30 A Robert got a call from Celeste letting us know that her brother, George, had passed away. We all knew George from our campground...a sweet guy that we will miss so much. Our thoughts and prayers go to Celeste & Robert and their family. Robert had joined us late yesterday after driving Celeste to the Witchataw (sp?) airport in the afternoon. He is staying with us and Celeste will catch up when possible. We ran into heavy rain early this morning but...

May 23, 2010 - Last Stop in New Mexico
This is our last day in New Mexico. We are in the small town of Clayton, located in the northeast corner of the state. Last fall we were in Southern New Mexico and for the past two weeks we have been in Northern New Mexico so we feel like we have been in most parts of the state. Neither of us had been in New Mexico and it is been fun to visit with lots to see and do from natural beauty to history to the arts. Clayton was founded in 1888 when the railroad came through this way. It was and still is cattle country. We had lunch at a local...

May 23, 2010 - Tornado on the Ground
We had some excitement on Sunday night while we were in Clayton, NM that I will never forget. Clayton is a small town near the Oklahoma panhandle and not far from Kansas. In the late afternoon the sky became very dark and the wind picked up. A tornado watch was announced for the area. I looked on a weather site on the internet at the radar and sure enough there were storm cells lined up to the south of us and headed our way. I called the campground office and the man who answered the phone said that the danger was to the east of us, but,...

Oct 8, 2009 - Clayton, NM
Encountered snow in higher elevations as we drove south from Colorado Springs. Very light snow, no accumulation on road, just on windshield and on the ground on the side of the road. KOA in Clayton has somewhat larger than normal KOA size sites and all sites level. This is far enough away from 287 that you dont hear the road noise. Good place to stay over nite or for a few days if you need to get off of the road.

Aug 25, 2009 - Clayton, NM
We continued our drive south and west down US 56, crossing the panhandle of Oklahoma, and just into New Mexico. We stayed overnight at a small KOA campground which was sufficient for our needs (Ollie's, too). Tomorrow morning we'll drive the last 90 miles on US 56 and then will be back on I-25.

Apr 2, 2006 - Clayton, NM
We left Henryetta, OK this morning and the weather was great. The RV park we stayed at was right off of the interstate and we heard the traffic when the storm wasn't waking us up. The motor home rocked and rolled in the wind during the storm. From Oklahoma we went through northern Texas and took US 87 into New Mexico. We spent the night in Clayton, NM at a KOA campground. Berke, one of our dogs, had surgery to remove fatty tumors before we left Kissimmee. Berke tore open his chest incision and we took him by a vet before we left. The vet...

Oct 28, 2005 - Arrived Clayton, NM
After a 6-hour trip via US 56, we reached Clayton, NM, just across the OK-NM state line. We will avoid US 56 in the future beause the road was narrow, no shoulders, heavy truck traffic, and occasional very slow moving farm equipment. It was scary and slow. With a constant head wind and gusts up to 40 mph we had difficulty going 60 mph and probably got less than 8 mpg. We planned to go on to Albuquerque tomorrow but changed our minds. It's pleasant and very quiet here at the KOA and we decided to stay until Monday. And if it rains and storms...
