Yesterday we left Canyon de Chelly behind and headed towards New Mexico traveling north, mostly through Navajo reservation. The rock formations and the colors are extraordinary, one can see why they treasure this land, it is stark but it holds a genuine beauty in its simplicity. The journey was longer than I had expected so we were caught in late afternoon with no place to stay and everyone getting tired. May 5, 2009 - Chaco Culture National Historic World Heritage Site

Today we visited the Chaco Culture National Historic Monument. We saw the most amazing Chacoan ruins! We visited three excavated Great houses, one with as many as 600 rooms dating back as far as 800 AD. It is believed that around 3000 to 6000 chacoans inhabited this small canyon from 850 to 1250 AD. During this time there were several periods of building that reflected the evolution of different descendants of Chacoan culture such as the Pueblo, the Hopi, and later, even the Navajo. Mar 21, 2008 - Chaco Culture National Historic Park

Today we travelled 50 plus miles to Chaco Canyon in the middle of nowhere to visit the Chaco Culture National Historic Park. It was in this high desert canyon valley over a 1000 years ago that a flourishing center of ancestral Puebloan culture developed. We took a very informative guided tour of the main structure called Pueblo Bonito and drove the eight mile circular drive to the other structures.
