Nov 9, 2009 - Snow vs Snow
After travelling thru upstate New Mexico we now find our selves in Alamogordo. Wierd name but then again we have a city called Wawa. We visited the White Sands National Park and it was like being in the Soo in February, except it was 18c. The sand is soft, white, firm and gets everywhere (I mean everywhere). It was a weird experience to drive by tall "snow banks" and not have to worry about snow tires. While driving thru the mountains later, we came upon real snow. Snow. In New Mexico. Crap. We spent the night in Carlsbad where we managed...

We drove up to Alamogordo, New Mexico today to see The New Mexico Museum of Space History. The museum has lots of interesting stuff related to space flight and the space age. Kathie was fascinated with the parabolic dishes in the garden. Paul could whisper something at one, and Kathie could hear it on the other side of the garden. Inside the building was a simulator for landing space shuttle. We both tried to land the shuttle at Edwards AFB. Paul disintegrated at about 20,000 feet, Kathie splattered it all over the desert a couple of...

We had a task to do on Wednesday morning before going to see the sights - we drove a few miles from our campground in Alamogordo to a little town called La Luz to get our mail. This is the first time we have had it sent to General Delivery. It first goes to our mail service in Livingston, TX and then I call and tell them where to send it. It works like a charm. The USPS does all right in my book. After going through our mail and doing the necessary tasks like renewing our vehicle registration for our motorhome with the good state of MA,...

Aug 4, 2009 - Amazing in Alamogordo
We left Tijeras on Monday, July 20 and headed south to Alamogordo where we would stay for two days so we could visit White Sands National Monument. When we were about 50 miles out, Don noticed a line of white on the horizon. We were amazed that we could see the “white sands” from this far out. Wow! How cool is that? After we got settled in at the campground, we decided we’d visit the park that afternoon, since we’d read in brochures that it was best for photographs to be taken in the afternoon when the sun wasn’t so bright. Plus we had a...

Tuesday, June 23rd: Roswell to Alamogordo, NM Woke up to the sun drying things out–yay! Fixed fruit for the morning and headed to Joanne’s. Made a pass through the UFO parking lot and also got gas. As always, she had lots of insight into what is ailing Bill. We returned to the park to hook up. I fixed lunch for Bill, planning to pick up something at the health food store (Down to Earth) for me, which was our next stop. Stocked up and had them heat a burrito for me. West to the mountains, which we couldn’t see. We knew what that meant. No...

After we left Moab, we traveled to Albuquerque to get some work done on the Coach. We spent five days in Albuquerque, visiting with friends and just kicking back. We left for Alamogordo, New Mexico on the 12Th to attend a club rally. The last few days have been a lot of fun. We visited the White Sands National Park one afternoon. This park should go on your must see list. Today we visited the Space Museum and had a guided tour by a former astronaut. We also spent some time this week in the beautiful town of Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Tomorrow...

For those of you not familiar with the desert, you will be surprised to hear that we had on two blankets and the heater by morning. By the time we left, about 10:30, it was already very hot. After one more pass through the UFO lot (scoring several more states), we headed west. Today we came home the same route, seeing several antelope just after we left Roswell. It was so dry they were already eating cholla cacti. Sure hope we get some rain soon. We had fruit in the morning, lunch en route, and stopped in Tularosa (13 miles north of Alamo)...

White Sands, New Mexico… home of the White Sands Missile Range where the US Air Force has tested almost every new missile and rocket since the beginning of our country’s entry into the space age. Also, this is the location of the "Trinity Site" where the first atomic bomb was detonated as a test. As a result, the New Mexico Space Museum is located in Alamogordo, NM, next to the Missile Range. White Sands National Monument is located here as well. It is a desert of rolling dunes made of stunningly white gypsum. We stopped here on our way...

May 5, 2009 - Preparation
Hi All, We're finishing up our semester and preparing for our great summer adventure. So far, Bill had set up our itinerary and made all the necessary reservations and arrangements, I've done a little baking and stashed some nut bread loaves in the freezer, we have piles of things in the den waiting to be loaded into the car or trailer, and we've cleaned the Highlander, rearranging and sorting what to leave and what to take. We have a friend set up to come once a week and water plants and feed birds. Only a week left to go!

We drove down to Alamogordo (means "Fat Cottonwood") to spend a few days exploring the southeast NM area. We found a lot more to do in the area than we expected and we stayed for several days, using Alamogordo as our base camp. We stayed at the White Sands Community RV Park which had concrete pads for the RVs and a huge (commercial) size clean laundry room. There was no problem doing our laundry there. This park also had mobile homes in addition to RVs. The staff was very friendly and even came to our RV unit to make sure we didn't have a...

The next place I visited was New Mexico and I only had time to see the highlights of the southeastern corner. First, I went to Alamogordo where I visited the International Space Museum and White Sands National Monument. Here's the outside of the museum They had lots of rockets and other space euipment on display outside This museum was about the history of space flight, both manned and unmanned and the many contributions New Mexico has made to it. They had a hall of fame with many recognizable names, including people like Copernicus...
