Jul 16, 2011 - Summer RV Trip to New England - (Woodstock, NH)

Our plan for today was to drive to Squam Lake and discover the area of the state made famous by the movie On Golden Pond. Marty has been waiting for this part of the trip and prepared us before we left Birmingham by ordering the movie from NetFlix the week before we departed. We drove to Holdings, NH, at the advice of our neighbors at the campground, and booked seats on the “On Golden Pond” Squam Lake cruise offered by the Holdings Wildlife Center. 110716-18-Squam Lake, NH - Golden Pond Cruise - Movie Setting The cruise was really in two...

Jul 15, 2011 - Summer RV Trip to New England - (Woodstock, NH)

Today we will see the sights of central New Hampshire. We load the bicycles onto the car and head north on I93 to the point it enters the Franconia Notch State Park and stop at the visitor center. Here there is a museum and a hiking trail into something called “the Flume”. The Flume is a narrow canyon discovered in the 1800’s by a 93 year old grandmother looking for a good fishing spot on the Pemigewasset River. The Flume trail runs over a mile passing covered bridges, waterfalls and pools along the river. 110715-05-Franconia, NH -...

Jul 14, 2011 - Summer RV Trip to New England - (Woodstock, NH)

Today was a little sad – we have enjoyed our stay so much in Maine and our schedule does not appear as interesting for New Hampshire. We are on the road by 8:30 AM as the GPS tells us we have over 200 miles to travel and few will be on interstates. It is interesting to travel through Maine and New Hampshire on regular roads – traffic is not heavy and the small New England towns are fun and quaint. Shortly after noon, we cross into New Hampshire and start on the Kacamagus highway – one of the few roads in New Hampshire that goes...

Oct 8, 2010 - Day 6 - Lake Winnipesaukee & Lake Squam

Today was another great day, all about the foliage. We began by riding the bus to the town of Meredith, New Hampshire, where we boarded the Lake Winnipesaukee Railroad and took about an hour's ride around the lake to the town of Weirs Beach. We all gathered for a big group photo, then boarded the m/s Mount Washington for an hour's cruise across Lake Winnipesaukee to Wolfeboro, America's oldest summer resort. After spending a little time at the Wright Museum, a great World War II museum, we headed around the other side of Lake Winnipesaukee...

Oct 7, 2010 - Day 5 - North Conway & The Kancamagus Highway

Hallelujah! As we gathered for breakfast in the dining room, the sun peaked out a bit and we were all treated to the beautiful scenery outside. Then as we were boarding the bus, the rain started as if on cue. Today was all about the foliage...the main reason we came! We headed North to the Franconia Notch (a notch is what they call a valley)State Park. Of course, we needed our umbrellas. Then we headed on to North Conway after stopping at the Jackson covered bridge. We stopped for some lunch and shopping in North Conway, with intermittent...

Oct 6, 2010 - Day 4 - Lexington & Concord, On to New Hampshire

Oh my goodness...we've seen enough rain to last us a couple of years! It was raining when we got up this morning and it rained all day as we left Cape Cod, traveled up to Lexington and Concord outside of Boston, then all the way up to Lincoln, New Hampshire! Our first stop in the rain was the Minute Man National Historical Park between Concord and Lexington. Here we visited the Old North Bridge. This was the bridge that Paul Revere rode over to warn the colonists in Concord that the British regulars were arriving by sea. The Massachusettes...

Jun 2, 2009 - Lincoln, NH - White Mountains National Forest

(Ron Writing) The repair shop called this morning to let us know they’d located the part needed to repair our generator. It shipped today and will arrive by Thursday. We decided to explore some more of the beautiful White Mountains area of New Hampshire while we’re waiting to get our generator back. From Gorham we headed south on NH-16 to Conway and then west on NH-112. We got as far as Big Rock National Forest Campground about 5 miles east of Lincoln. We found a nice campsite and are spending the night here ($18 no hookups, no dump...

Sep 28, 2008 - Day 169 Lincoln NH

Day 169 Sunday 28th September Lincoln NH pg 45 G7 A first for the trip – we saw a snake which was on its way to hibernate for the winter or on the other hand it could have been a baby snake that lost it way. Fortunately for us it was only about 6 inches long. As we were observing the snake, another family group came running over to take a look and the parents let their 10 year old daughter pick it up; obliviously it must have been a harmless one. The last two days has been like going to a festival of colour, with your eye balls and mind...
