Aug 8, 2011 - Take a hike!

We've spent the last couple of days exploring around the area, taking winding mountain roads and trying to avoid the weekend crowds. There were plenty of people in the area Saturday & Sunday as Rt. 16 here is a mecca for outlet and gift stores, family theme parks, and hikers. The small villages were clogged with cars and tourists and we couldn't avoid them. OK, I know we're tourists too. LOL LOL The hiking area we wanted to go to was extremely crowded Saturday so we decided to wait until this morning to go. Unfortunately we had a 30% chance...

Aug 5, 2011 - Blueberry?...Apple? Where are you??

We’ve been driving some more loops in the area and found some beautiful sites. Thankfully the weather God is still with us and although we see a dark cloud now and then, we haven’t had any significant rain since we’ve been here. Yesterday we went northwest toward a small village called Dixville Notch. Does the name sound familiar to you? Well, it’s the site of the first cast ballots for all the presidential elections. I guess there are only about 12 people in the village, they vote right after midnight on election day, and they have the...

Aug 3, 2011 - Maine to New Hampshire and back again

Yesterday we moved west from Baxter State Park area and drove all the back roads....bumpity bump bump!! Obviously Maine doesn't have a lot of extra money for their roads as it was a rough ride. But, thankfully the scenery was well worth the trip as we passed small ponds and lakes dotted with camps, deep granite gourges with happy summer swimmers, and beautiful vistas on the high roads. A nasty storm was in the area and we ran in and out of rain most of the day. Our CB radio warned of golf ball size hail but we were lucky enough to run out...

May 11, 2011 - White Mountains, New Hampshire

May 10 - 11. The drive from Bangor to Gorham took us 3 hours in very cold and windy weather. We discovered a leak in a window at our bed caused by driving in the rain. This has meant making an unscheduled return to NY to have the window sealed properly. Despite this we decided to stay on track and drove across Maine to New Hampshire and camped at Gorham. A special note that we were their 1st customers of the new season. One of the attractions in this area are Moose. Road signs warn about Moose on the road and to be careful not to hit...

Team GO

Jul 21, 2010 - Settled in Gorham, New Hampshire

We arrived safely about mid-afternoon in Gorham, New Hampshire. I’d love to say we had a trouble free travel day, but that was not the case today. We had heavy traffic, especially early this morning as we tried to maneuver through Hartford at the tail end of rush hour. About the time we saw some relief in the traffic flow we hit Springfield, Massachusetts. Not a large city as cities go, but everyone seemed to be on the highway. There was only one lunatic who seemed to think he was driving the Indy 500. We had a minor heart stopper when he...

Scratchin' the Itch

Jul 19, 2010 - Gorham, NH

On the road again. This brings us to the end of a dream vacation for this year. Today we start our turn around and head back to Garland, TX. We topped off our gas tank, and headed out on US Hwy 2 heading south-west. We had rain most of the drive but nothing major. But it was still a very scenic drive on the highways and towns along the route. After covering 188 miles, our overnight stop is at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Gorham, New Hampshire. Once again, we were on the hunt for a "pressed penny" machine. We found one at the Mt. Washington...

Sep 18, 2009 - Staying Warm

We are in for a bit of a change in weather starting today, so we have decided to stick in camp and stay warm. They are predicting hurricane force winds with a chance of snow on top of Mount Washington, so we are very glad we did our tour yesterday. We took a total of 98 pictures yesterday. I came into the office to post my journal and download some pictures and it takes forever . . . almost like having a real job. I hope someone out there appreciates them.

Pretty Damn Nice!

Sep 13, 2009 - The White Mountains are amazing!

Hi folks and friends! I have received several emails....yes...I am ok and am still on the Trail. It has been harder and harder to get to a computer. I have been putting in more miles on the Trail and stopping in less towns, so therefore, have not been updating my journal as much. I am now in Gorham, New Hampshire. I left Connecticut and walked through Mass., Vermont, almost all of New Hampshire and now am only about 16 miles away from the state of Maine. I just got through with the White Mountains...Mt. Mousilauke, Mt. Washington, the...

Jun 4, 2009 - Gorham, NH - White Mountains, Crawford Notch

(Ron Writing) This morning we continued our loop tour of the White Mountain National Forest. I know it doesn’t look much like a “loop” when you view the map in the journal but that’s just because it only plots the points where we stop for the night, not the actual route we’ve driven. Today we drove east and southeast on US-302 from Littleton to Glen, NH where we got on NH-16 north and drove back to Gorham, NH. The scenery along 302 was very beautiful. The highlight of the day was the Crawford Notch area. Note that in New Hampshire they call...

Jun 1, 2009 - Gorham, NH - Generator in for Repair

(Ron Writing) Last night I started the generator to charge the batteries and make some popcorn. After it ran normally for several minutes it suddenly started sounding like it had an extremely heavy load on it. I went out to check and I immediately smelled overheated electrical components and shut the system down. This morning some internet research and phone calls indicated the nearest Yamaha service center to be in Gorham, NH about 70 miles from Littleton. We drove there this morning and brought the generator in for diagnosis. In the mean...

Sep 26, 2008 - Day 167 Gorham, New Hampshire

Day 167 Friday 26th September Gorham, New Hampshire p 65 F8 This morning it was an early morning call into Best Buys in Bangor – Steve decided to buy the lens (18-200mm) for our existing camera. He plans to buy the D90 on-line when we get back to Angela and buy it on-line. Because it’s fairly new on the market everyone seems to have the same price, however when you buy on-line for the same amount of $$$ you get more “bang for your buck” – they include a camera case, extra battery, memory card etc. which none of the retail outlets...

Sep 18, 2008 - New Hampshire and the White Mountains

Greetings from the beautiful state of New Hampshire. We didn't think mountain ranges could get more striking, but the White Mountains are breath taking. We spent all our time in the northern part of the state which is so natural. We only saw one moose - a cow standing in the ditch by the side of the road. We never saw a bear, but we did see plenty of wild turkeys. We continued to visit waterfalls, flumes and gorges. Everywhere you turn there are pristine streams tumbling over huge rocks. NH is known for covered bridges of which we saw...
