To hopefully beat the impending rain, we left early Wednesday to do some riding in the White Mountain National Forest area. We headed south to Franconia and Woodstock and there it began spritzing, but we decided to chance the weather anyway and headed east on the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112), because we’d heard it was a very pretty ride. Franconia Notch is a spectacular mountain pass traversed by a unique interstate parkway which extends from the Flume Gorge at the south end to Echo Lake Beach to the north. For eight miles Interstate 93 is located between the high peaks of the Kinsman and Franconia mountain ranges. Franconia Notch was the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, known as the Great Stone Face immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster. The Old Man collapsed in May 2003.
