Sep 23, 2012 - Travel Day North
We pulled out of Travis Air Force Base FamCamp at 8:30 a.m., hooked up the Jeep in a nearby parking lot and were underway by 8:45. This is the FIRST time we have NOT been greeted with a clear, cloudless sky since we arrived the first of September. And the clouds followed us all day! We both stated many times today we were grateful to be on I-80 heading east because the same route heading in the opposite direction was positively choked with traffic and mostly motorcycles. We assumed there must have been some sort of rally going on around...

RV miles driven today: 361 Total Trip miles 6044 We left Salt Lake City on a cool morning for a long drive to Wennemucca, Nevada. It will just be a one night stop as we head to Carson City. After driving through some wide open spaces with the salt flats on both sides of the road, we cross into Nevada to where a storm is approaching. The strong winds going through the canyons were really rocking our RV's and we were hoping to get to the campground before the storm hit. Just a few miles before we reached our destination, we came upon a...

Jun 7, 2012 - Ho hum
Winnemucca, NV. Today we really pushed ourselves. Usually our destinations are 100 to 150 miles apart. Today our destination was 238 miles away and we went straight to it. The reason - there is NOTHING out here! Winnemucca has a total area of 8.3 square miles and is reached by driving for miles and miles through flat, sparse, dry desert. We had tried to find a place in Elko, NV, which is a much more interesting town but they are having a mining expo and every room was filled. Oh, well. There is always tomorrow. Just a quick "fascinating"...

My weather icon on the computer is still set for Port Aransas, Texas, and yesterday afternoon, it said it was 81 there, while in Carson City, we watched the temperature gauge steadily fall from 59 down to 39 degrees in just over an hour. I really am missing the beach! -- This morning was another early travel day and it was very nippy as we left Carson City and headed east. The skies were overcast and every once in a while a stray snowflake would crash against the windshield. The hills all around had a new dusting of white. -- We passed by...

Sep 26, 2011 - Bear World and the Great Speeding Incident
Hi Everyone, Well after the shock of beer free Rexburg, we headed off early and made our first stop at Bear World, where we had the opportunity to feed some bear cubs. This was a once in a lifetime experiance as the cubs are bred in captivity, and at the time of our visit where around 9 months old and weighed 90lbs. Whilst it was all done rather safetly, I got a bit worried a couple of time when the bear decided that it wanted to grab my arm instead of the bottle but not as worried as Greg who's bear took a liking to his plums, which had...

After fueling up at Flying J in Salt Lake City, we headed west on I-80 toward Reno, Nevada. We passed the Great Salt Lake to the north of the highway. After the lake, the land was all white...salt! Nothing grows in it. For a long way, we followed the white landscape. We passed a Morton Salt processing facility and later a Cargill plant. We crossed the Great Salt Lake desert and the proving grounds for testing cars, shuttles, racing, etc. The white environment looks like snow. We entered Nevada about 11:30 Mountain time. West Wendover, NV,...

Aug 10 Wednesday: Irv took the truck into the dealer, and after checking they found that this has happened before & the factory had sent out a bulletin saying that they can use a special glue to the seal the connections. This fix was ready mid-afternoon and we were able to leave the park around 3 pm. We on the road again, but when we got to a high pass about 50 miles from Winnemucca, it blew again. We let it cool down before putting it back together. We stayed at Walmart parking lot in Winnemucca that night and decided that we had better...

Sep 1, 2011 - On the road, again....
1 Sept 2011 I’m out! The license took a while to get back in my convoluted mail system. So the days preceding this one…. 27 Aug I took off and landed in Rifle Falls State Park in Colo. Nice place and glad I only took 2 days camping there. Not much other than the falls and a short hike. More hikes up north but rain came. Then the plan was to swing north into Wyoming then back down the east side of the divide to Estes Park and the great Longs Peak Highland Games. Since I have come to dread the downward draw of gravity with a trailer pushing...

Jul 25, 2011 - Into the Desert
I have always loved the desert, perhaps because I was born there. The highlight of our day was going through the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge which lies on the border of Oregon and Nevada. Peter missed it last time when he flew home early from Salt Lake City. It was a magical day. Larissa found an intact arrowhead at a rest stop. We saw the donkey herd that lives there (although they were further off than last time). We glimpsed a solitary wild black horse with a white diamond, and we found a dead golden eagle with feathers strewn about....

Jun 26, 2011 - Travel Day - Winnemucca, Nevada
The trip to Winnemucca from Sparks was a short day but with Ken's body still fighing off the infection, short is good. Did not take a picture of our RV parked because this is not a place to take a picture of... if you get my drift. We will be here only one night and off we go again and at least we have our own place with us and that makes it great. Again thanks for all your prayers. God Bless Ken and Fran

Jun 11, 2011 - Winnimucca to home
Headed out on I-80 doing about 72mph, we found if we went about 68 we could get 10.5mpg vs 9mpg at 72. Long drive to Reno, but we stopped a few times to break up the drive a bit. Got to Reno and decided that we would try an AM/PM since we had a gas card. Got off the freeway and things were looking good , big station, easy access in and out. Pulled in and oopps…12’5” overhead clearance and we are 12’9”. While the overhang looked tall they had lots of lights and cameras hanging down. So we filled, did a reverse dance, and squeezed around the...
