Jun 19, 2010 - Las Vegas - Reno & Stops Along The Way

The last two days in Las Vegas were really great. Both days we spent a lot of time with Michelle and her two girls, Evelyn & Sierra. It really was a joy to spend time with them. Wednesday we pulled out of Las Vegas headed for Beatty (gateway to Death Valley). We had a great trip, good weather, good roads, and no wind; and arrived early afternoon. Not a fancy park, but a nice stop over place. Next stop was Whiskey Flats, Hawthorne, NV. The trip was not the most pleasant, really high winds all the way. We did arrive early afternoon again,...

Ken and Fran - 2010

Apr 15, 2009 - Hot and cold

Using Sparks, a town next to Reno, as our base we intend to explore the Reno and Lake Tahoe area. The RV resort we found in Sparks was excellent but it was strange to find Astroturf rather than grass! A first for us. It was well located close to a small man-made lake with a great doggy beach, so Jenny had a great cool off in the lake as it was hot the day we arrived. However the next two days were very cold with snow and wind so we didn’t go far from the coach.

Nov 2, 2008 - A driving day

November 2, 2008 A driving day It rained most of last night and rained off and on most of today; a good day for driving. We drove from Provo, UT to Sparks, NV. We didn’t intend to drive that far but with the hour gained with the switch back from daylight savings time and an hour gained crossing into Pacific Time, we arrived in Sparks at 5:30pm. After setting up camp, we went to one of the Casinos for dinner and a little (very little) gambling. It’s been several years since we did any gambling; It took a while to figure out the new slot...

Jun 5, 2008 - Sparks, Nevada

Hoo Ha! The line made famous by Robert DiNiro in Scent of a Woman. We traveled the lovely bike path along the Truckee River From Truckee to Lake Tahoe(and after the I80 experience yesterday I am now preaching $15/gal gas to buld these across the country). Beautiful blue skies around the North Shore of Tahoe. With only one climb, albeit a BIG one, people stopped for photos. Then around 10AM loomed the 8940 foot Mt.Rose! 8 miles of non-stop climbing at altitude. I have developed early symptoms of butt sores (turns out my long pants had a tear...

"Retirement" Journey

Mar 29, 2008 - Tahoe Stop

We decide that we will make a stop in Tahoe as we head north. John needs to check in with his doctor and I need a Zac hug. We drove up Hwy 395 from Barstow to Lone Pine. The view from Suzy's windshield of the Sierras was spectacular. We are in awe of the beauty and grandeur. Both of us have driven this highway before in a car, but having that view fill up the windshield before us was humbling. The park in Lone Pine was beautiul. It was a relief to have cooler weather. The next morning, Suzy again climbed the passes heading towards Tahoe. We...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Sep 30, 2007 - Returning Home

From McClellan, it's two miles back down Watt's Ave. where we pick up Interstate 80 East for Reno/Sparks. Two hours and twenty minutes later, 132 miles, we're home in Wingfield Springs on the Red Hawk golf course. Pictures taken from Donner Summit looking east over the Old Lincoln Highway bridge, first transcontinental highway in the US. There was a drowning in Donner Lake this past winter when a fellow, ice skating, happened onto thin ice near the middle of the lake. We have travelled on I-80 past this lake for many years, it's only been...

Chico Family Wedding

Aug 13, 2007 - San Jose, CA to Sparks, NV

We finally got started! It seems like we've been planning and preparing for months and we both were itchy to get going. We left San Jose at about 1030am and arrived in Sparks about 5pm, traveling 276 miles. We stopped at the Born Free Motorcoach outlet in Rancho Cordova, CA and had a nice visit with Gil, the Born Free representative. We took I80 over the Sierra Nevada and saw the temperature rise from 73 to 98 degrees. Since we're continuing East across Nevada and Utah, we expect to see temps over 100 every day and will enjoy the cooler...

Jun 23, 2007 - Rest stop - Sparks, Nevada

After getting a late start, this first day we got 250 miles down the road. We spent our first night at a State of Nevada DOT rest stop about 30 miles east of Sparks. It's nice and shady, it's FREE, and it has free WiFi. We actually had abalone for dinner! What more could you ask? Tomorrow we head out Highway 50 ('The loneliest road in America') in the general direction of Great Basin National Park.
