Sep 19, 2015 - Donner Pass

We went to Harbor Freight and Ray used a coupon for free screwdrivers. Then we drove to Donner State Park in California. The interstate was slowed to a crawl on the west lane due to construction, the other side was moving well so we at least have that to look forward to on our way back to Reno. The state park at Donner Lake has a brand new visitor center that is first rate. It tells the story of the Donner Party of 1846 but also has a great exhibit on the Lincoln Highway that is Hwy 40 (which parallels I80) and also the Washoe Indians who...

Sep 17, 2015 - Reno air races

We spent the entire day at the races. First we drove and found a parking space that was free on the side road not too far from the entrance. There was paid parking for $10 and $15 that wasn't much closer so we were forturnate to go on Thursday - the other dates I'm sure would find parking more a problem. We got pit passes and first went to the end with static displays that were mainly military. Not a huge display but interesting, including an F15 from Klamath Falls. Ray got a look at the cockpit and spoke to the pilot who had walked by us...

Sep 15, 2015 - Virginia City

Today the smoke has cleared and we drove up a very windy mountain road to Virginia City. It's in the heart of the Comstock region where the most silver and gold were mined. It's a neat town as most of the old buildings from the 1870's are still there, boardwalks are the side walks. It's steep - to get from one street to another requires quite a hike. We took the virginia and truckee 35 minute train ride that was really worth it. The narration was constant and we saw the remains of various mines, some with headframes still standing. We saw...

Sep 14, 2015 - Reno races and Scheels

The smoke is deeper today than yesterday. We drove to Stead field to get a handle on the race set up and today the entry and parking are free. We parked very close - won't have that luxury on later days. We sat in the grandstands and saw planes such as T6 and P51 going around the pylons in practice. It's windy and the smoke obscured most of the mountains around us but did not interfere with the race circuit. We saw the box seats, the reserved grandstand and general admission seats. Believe we will just go in as general admission as there is...

Sep 13, 2015 - Reno and smoke

The parking lot was empty first thing this AM, then people parked close to our cones but moved out again. The guy in the trailer but his chair on the spot that had the motorcycle and fortunately the troops did not move it By the time we left at 9:30 there was enough room to get out. Saturday was a much busier day for the parking lot, glad we are leaving today instead. We took a scenic drive south through California primarily state and nationl forests - saw many signs for the lava national monument and did see piles of lava among the desert...

Aug 18, 2015 - Day 42

There were frequent (and long!) trains passing thru, even at night but a beautiful sunrise over the mountain. Campsite include a fearless, bushy squirrel and birds perched in nearby tree. Back on the road to Donner Pass. State Park Museum there was very interesting and draws a crowd. Continued on Donner Pass Road, past lovely lake, more winding road, then to Rainbow bridge. There were many people on bicycles climbing the hilly road in groups and singles. While we were checking out bridge, a female rock climber appeared over edge and...

Aug 5, 2015 - 8/1-8/5 Reno, NV

We left Mt. Shasta KOA just before 9AM Saturday morning and drove south. We had decided to take I5 to Red Bluff, then 99 to 20 and 20 to I80. Originally we had thought that we would go I5 north to Weed then 97 to 395 and come down the back way, however, that turned out to be way to long and we were not about to take this rig up over Mt. Lassen. We made a stop for a snack and potty break for all in at the rest stop just before Red Bluff and pulled in next to an old Allegro, see pic. As it turned out we might have been time ahead if we had...

Jan 27, 2015 - Reno 2

It was raining fairly hard when we got downstairs for breakfast so we decided to stay in Reno for another night. We got it free again. We spent a couple of hours walking the strip, not as long as Vegas but casinos a lot farther apart. They have cleaned things up a lot since the last time we were here. We even got to watch some people skating from the room. There is a rink a block away.

Jan 26, 2015 - Reno

We had the comp breakfast in the room and then headed out on the road. It was very foggy for the first 1/2 hour and then cleared out. It was very scenic again and we got to see what happens when someone screws up driving. Traffic was held up for awhile and then they were letting one lane through. Someone went over the side. We couldn't see the vehicle but there were 4 or 5 tow trucks, guys crawling done the side of the mtn and cops everywhere. We spent quite a bit of time at Lake Tahoe but rooms were a little pricey there so we got to Reno...

Oct 1, 2014 - Reno to Klamath Falls

Day 5: Started the morning returning the hire car and then headed to Klamath Falls. It was a nice drive through some areas we didn't except. We arrived in Klamath Falls @ 3.30pm The area surrounding the RV Park was questionable but the park is very nice. We took a small walk this afternoon along the bikeway that ran along a fast flowing creek to the shopping centre were we looked at place to have dinner later. We later returned for pizza then went back to the RV for the night to relax.
