Aug 9, 2007 - Hot Nites and Cool Cars~

Aug 9 Hot Nites and Cool Cars~ Hot August Nights....the largest gathering of vintage cars in the U.S. Every store window, every employee turns back the clock and poodle skirts and oxfords are the dress of the day. Look over your shoulder at the stop light and you may see a '52 T-Bird or a '61 Vette...the low rumble of the Bel Aires becomes the music of the night.... Every parking in Reno is roped off ....people gather, not to SELL their cars but to show them off! Chamois fly and the smell of car polish is intoxicating, we feel the hook bite...

Aug 4, 2007 - Reno-"Hot August Nights"

Well, we've came down off the mountain, now we are in Reno until next Thursday, August 9. We are here during the week of the "Hot August Nights" celebration. It is an annual event where the 50's era is celebrated with "Sock Hops", a 1950's Prom on the last day, and over 500 classic cars on display and crusing Virginia Ave. in Reno and in Sparks. I've given you a sample of some of the cars in the pictures above. It has just gotten started, so there are lots more cars to be seen, and no tellin' what else. We tried driving down Virginia Ave....

Jul 5, 2007 - Flutter-Bye!

(Sorry, no pictures this time. You wouldn't want to see them if we had taken any!) Don't know if we told you in the past, but over the years I have developed atrial flutter, which is a somewhat "regular" irregularity, or arrhythmia, in the heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation, which I've also had in the past, is a more "irregular" irregularity, and is more dangerous, possibly leading to strokes or heart attacks. This is why I had to see a cardiologist. The cardiologist I first visited sent me to one of his colleagues in Reno who this week took...

Apr 27, 2007 - Carson City, NV

We left the fairgrounds early (9:30 am on the road is early for us), heading towards Carson City Nevada. We traveled with Rich and Darlene and we met up with Phil and Susan for a picnic lunch along the way at a local park Phil has scoped out ahead of time. We got to see Shelly and Matthew and also Kay, Susan's sister. Had a nice, however short, visit and then headed on to Carson City to visit with friends. Rich and Darlene were heading to Reno so we parted ways following the picnic. We arrived at the Comstock County RV Resort in the late...

Apr 12, 2007 - Sparks, NV

We got here around 5pm and checked in, but after seeing how nice the other rigs in the campground are, we decided to run the rig over to the wash before hooking everything up, so we didn't get settled until after 7pm. We are just a couple of miles from Reno. The campground is one of the nicest we've ever stayed in. We must have a famous band for neighbors. Their rig looks like it cost a million bucks, and there are guitars in the front window. They even have a white limo parked next to it. I'll keep my eye on it. We had hoped to be rid of...

Apr 9, 2007 - Stopover in Reno

After driving 503 miles from Salt Lake City, UT, it was time to take a short break. We are staying at Harrah's in downtown Reno. Veeery nice hotel. Wood furniture, down, the feather kind, blankets, granite counter in the bath, and a 32 inch television. We have been staying in Super 8 Motels. They were OK, but this is great. The room rent is pretty good, only $59 a night, but the casino is killing us.... Our room was on the 14th floor. Nice view, altho Kathie will only look from the bathroom door. (She doesn't do well with heights.) We took...

Apr 7, 2007 - DISMAL

RENO is a rather dismal place - almost always cloudy and dark. It is surrounded by mountains, which were snow covered most of our visit. Our main purpose for coming here was to see Mary's brother, whom we hadn't seen in a couple of years. He calls the city "the cesspool of sin." It was really nice to see Dominick, and he seemed happy we were there. We did do a little sightseeing - went to Donner Pass, Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe. I was glad I had told Shawn the story of Donner Pass before he heard it from the tour guide....

Oct 14, 2006 - Lake Tahoe, Nevada

After a 400+ mile journey from the Grand Canyon, we arrived at the amazing campground of the Zephyr Cove Resort. The campground, cabins, lodge and resort are set right on the banks of Lake Tahoe and about 3 miles north of the town/ski resort of Heavenly (www.zephyrcove.com). Our campsite was located across the street from the beach and it was nestled amongst tall fir trees. This was a nice change from most of the RV resorts we have visited. While many of them cater to luxury motorhomes, they frequently resemble large parking lots. The...

Sandy Beach Campground15 September - Camped here for 3 nights. Judy, Ron and Bette, and myself had dinner in my RV. Judy spent the night on the couch. She was my first overnight visitor. 16 September - Larry and Joanna joined us for a 10k at Spooner Lake followed by a potluck at the campground. Larry, Joanna, Judy, Ron and Bette, and myself all got cozy in my RV to watch the movie "RV". It was a kick. Larry and Joanna spent the night on the twin couches. 17 September - We all went to Incline Village for another 10k. Everyone went home after...

Sep 4, 2006 - Burning Man Recap - abridged

So I've been out on the road again for the last 2 weeks driving from the East with a slight detour to Vermont on my way to Burning Man. Now usually when I do this I like to take my time and set a leisurely pace across the states but alas this was not so this time. Pulling 12 to 15 hours a day driving and sleeping in my truck in truck stops brought a whole new level of fun to the journey. But seriously it was all good and I made it to Reno, Nevada on time plus the truck is now well over 200'000 miles on it and apparently still doing alright....

Aug 31, 2006 - Reno, Lake Tahoe

We made it to Reno and are parking in a friend of Jerrys Aunt's yard. Her name is Claire Brown and what a great person she is.She took out to dinner last night to Sharkey's and we had a wonderful time of getting to know each other. We went today to Lake Tahoe and what a beautiful drive that was.WE wenton the lake tour which is on a old paddle boat, and that is the clearest lake water I have ever seen. It has the cleanest water in any lake in America. We then went into lake Tahoe to Harrah's for lunch at a place called Fatboys and they have a...

Aug 20, 2006 - Day 1

After many months of planning, our journey to see the USA is underway. It would be wonderful if all our family and friends were able to be here with us, but since that isn't possible, we hope you will enjoy sharing our experiences through our travel log. We left late in the day with plans to stay in Wells, Nevada. That broke up the travel the next day into a manageable number of hours. The day was uneventful except for a thunder shower near Elko. The lighting was striking with full force and we saw three separate fires start. I snapped...
