Oct 22, 2016 - Zombie Crawl

Reno really goes all out for Halloween. They have a huge haunted house called the Slaughter House. Slaughter House is Reno's longest running haunted attraction and largest, highly anticipated, most attended and talked about Halloween attraction in Northern Nevada! We didn’t go into the house, we did drive over to the Greater Nevada Field to see the zombie dance. They have over 1,000 people dressed as zombies that dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller song. It was quite a site. They started out on the ground like they were dead, then they...

Sep 23, 2016 - Reno

We headed south out of Birch Bay on Thursday, spending the night at Seven Feathers Casino in Canyonlands. We ate at the buffet, one of Cynthias favorites. After a good nights sleep we headed towards Reno going down I-5 to Weed, California and crossing over the Sierras on US89 and US44 into Susanville, CA before turning down towards Reno. We stayed at the KOA in Boomtown. Too many people in town for street vibrations weekend so we couldn't stay at the Grand Sierra out by the airport. KOA is getting a bit on the pricey side for what they offer.

Sep 23, 2016 - Reno, Nevada

We drove over to Reno today, about fifteen miles from our campground. We wanted to try the prime rib and lobster tail special at the California/Nevada Casino Hotel. It was wonderful and the price of $11.99 was wonderful too. :-) The steak and lobster tail was only $9.99. Wowser deals and great food. Everywhere we went today we saw motorcycles. We found out the Street Vibrations Fall Rally was going on in town. They had roads closed off with tons of booths selling everything you could want for motorcycles. Everyone knows that the “Biggest...

Sep 19, 2016 - Drove all the Way to Reno

We didn't unhitch in Jackpot so we were on the road before 9:00 yesterday morning. You would think there's not a lot of see in the desert - & there's not much man-made to see - but we find the desert fascinating. And the mountain views are constantly changing. We did end up on I-80 - guess you can't go to or from California without being on I-80. We'd planned to stop in Winnemucca for the nite but were in the groove rollin down I-80 & it was only around noon when we got to Winnemucca so we decided to just keep going. We got to Sparks before...

May 27, 2016 - Pacifica to the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield to Lake Tahoe to Reno. NV

We left Pacifica this morning for Reno, Nevada. We took the Bay Bridge over to Oakland and towards Sacramento. We were surprised that the traffic wasn't totally crazy on the Bay Bridge. It did pick up over by Sacramento though. We stopped in Fairfield, we toured the Jelly Belly Factory. It was interesting to see all the Jelly Belly's and how they make them, package them and prepare them for shipping. It smelled pretty awesome in there too. In the gift shop you could sample 3 different kinds. If you wanted to stand in line, you could keep...

Apr 10, 2016 - Reno, Virginia City, and Genoa, NV

Las Vegas it's not - thank Goodness! We left Yosemite NP in mid-April and managed to drive over the Donner Pass (I-80) during the last winter storm of the year. Heavy snow, temperature in the teens, winds at 60 MPH. Fuel filter froze and a windshield wiper picked that moment to malfunction. We have some sense how the Donner party must have felt! We made it to our new home base in one of Reno's burbs.....Sparks, Nevada where we were greeted with sunshine and 60 degree temps. Two days later - winter storm, short lived, hallelujah. Sparks is a...

Sep 25, 2015 - Reno and the Bay Area

It's been a while so it's time to catch up. On 8/17 we went back to Reno to deal with getting rid of our tenant. That accomplished we hired a property manager who promptly rented out the house, at a higher rate. Feeling very blessed. After a day's delay due to a motorcycle that would not start we moved back to Alameda Fairgrounds where we promptly sold the motorcycle, it was too much hassle traveling with it compared to how little we used it. And... As some of you know, I/Tom have struggled with depression and anxiety for a number of years....

Sep 19, 2015 - Donner Pass

We went to Harbor Freight and Ray used a coupon for free screwdrivers. Then we drove to Donner State Park in California. The interstate was slowed to a crawl on the west lane due to construction, the other side was moving well so we at least have that to look forward to on our way back to Reno. The state park at Donner Lake has a brand new visitor center that is first rate. It tells the story of the Donner Party of 1846 but also has a great exhibit on the Lincoln Highway that is Hwy 40 (which parallels I80) and also the Washoe Indians who...

Sep 17, 2015 - Reno air races

We spent the entire day at the races. First we drove and found a parking space that was free on the side road not too far from the entrance. There was paid parking for $10 and $15 that wasn't much closer so we were forturnate to go on Thursday - the other dates I'm sure would find parking more a problem. We got pit passes and first went to the end with static displays that were mainly military. Not a huge display but interesting, including an F15 from Klamath Falls. Ray got a look at the cockpit and spoke to the pilot who had walked by us...

Sep 15, 2015 - Virginia City

Today the smoke has cleared and we drove up a very windy mountain road to Virginia City. It's in the heart of the Comstock region where the most silver and gold were mined. It's a neat town as most of the old buildings from the 1870's are still there, boardwalks are the side walks. It's steep - to get from one street to another requires quite a hike. We took the virginia and truckee 35 minute train ride that was really worth it. The narration was constant and we saw the remains of various mines, some with headframes still standing. We saw...
