Sep 11, 2008 - Reno

Hi Everyone, We just finished a 3 week stay in Reno. It was one week longer than planned due to Rich's unexpected sinus surgery. We're happy to report it was 100% successful, although Rich says "it was nothing to sneeze at". We were not quite prepared for the 100 degree weather every day of the three weeks. On the up side we were able to spend some time at all the September festivals. We spent a great day at Lake Tahoe. It is a beautiful area, in spite of the ear popping ride into the mountains. It was also about 20 degrees cooler than...

Sep 3, 2008 - Reno, Nevada

Yes, we have drove some miles in the past few days as you could see by the map, but Cheryl is excited about seeing her mom/family. We stopped in Reno to rest and view the town to get some pics but not gamble here, we shall wait for Carson City or the nearest grocery store, either way Cheryl wants me to go to "bring home the bacon". Reno is a neat town with a university, college, nice parks and the casinos with their nice hotels. We are staying just outside west of Reno at a KOA (that looks like it had been a drive-in) and holds 200 - 300...

Aug 19, 2008 - Day 16

We got off to tour Lake Tahoe with Connie. We got a real close up of the area because she had lived at Incline Village and has hiked every mountain around the lake, so she knows all kinds of little details about the trees, buildings and the lake. We ate outside and admired the strange cloud formations caused by the updrafts over the mountains. Then we came back to Reno to Connie’s house. This part of the day was devoted to washing clothes, downloading photographs and visiting. Connie, Evelyn and I went through old family pictures (what else...

Aug 7, 2008 - Driving to Reno

Got an early start today. It was extremely smokey this morning so we didn’t get very good videos. The truck is sure getting a workout today. Lots of long uphill grades for the poor truck to climb. We have about a 500 mile drive to get to Reno. After a few hours, we made it to the Sacramento Valley where we saw farms after farms growing tomatoes, hay, rice, sweet corn, olives trees, etc. Most of the fields have irrigation ditches, which they need. Very dry everywhere else. The city of Sacramento is large by my standards. I80 east of town has...

Aug 3, 2008 - Made it to Reno

Well here we are in Reno and the Weather is absolutely perfect. Our drive thru the high country and down Tioga pass went off without a problem. I would recommend not pulling a car up or down that pass. We took the car off in Tuolume Meadows and it worked out great. I have some great pics to post, but can't do it from this computer.... My computer is on vacation, as it can't get on line here without the pass key. (and guess who can't find it!) Our little granddaughter is doing great and she will sometimes get the giggles and just keeps...

Jul 20, 2008 - Reno, Nevada

We had a good ride from San Francisco to Reno today. It is only 218 miles and most of it is up hill!! We have enclosed a photo from Donner Pass at 7,227 feet. From there it was down hill to our present elevation of 4,600. We are staying an extra day here but that does not change our get home date. It was a little sad for us to leave San Francisco since that was the most southern and west point on this great adventure-we are now headiing east with each road day which means we are headed home!!!!! This campground is really nice and very new....

Jul 19, 2008 - A full day on the train

It was a restless night. Amanda and I were cold and didn't sleep well. I woke up at 6 am and moved to the chair because my back hurt. We are about 2 hours behind schedule because of rain overnight so we are still in Nebraska. We got seats in the sightseeing car for the ride through the Rockies after leaving Denver. The scenery was fantastic. We went through about 40 tunnels with the longest being the Moffat tunnel at 6 miles long. After that tunnel we had lunch and ate with an 88 year old lady from Iowa traveling to see her daughter. She...

Jun 19, 2008 - Reno, Nevada

Well we needed another break, so we got in the car and drove to Reno. We arrived yesterday and are leaving tomorrow. We are staying at the Silver Legacy Hotel & Casino. On the way up we stopped at Camping World for some stock parts for the generator, I had to change the oil and air filters the other day on normal maintenance, and wanted to replace my spare parts. We are having a great time donating money to the area, the meals are great and the entertainment is good also. We will be leaving tomorrow and stopping at Boomtown for another...

Jun 7, 2008 - Wetward Ho!

Today we journeyed across the rest of the vast and scenic state of Nevada on I80. Gorgeous mountains very different from Wyoming and Utah. These mountains are mostly devoid of trees. They are covered by vast expanses of greenery and shrubs. The tall mountains are jagged and snow covered at the peaks. The mountains present a apectacular array of colors in the sunlight-a very surreal experience against the vast blue sky-like a giant panoramic water color. THere are vast expanses of desert with little signs of life. The towns are old and...

May 12, 2008 - May 12 - June 12 "We've been everywhere...."

Well, we have covered a lot of territory in the last month. We have been to Texas, Oklahoma (And YES, we did spend two nights in a tornado shelter…thank you very much! Or truth be told *I* spent two nights in a shelter John sat them both out in the coach! The first time was just on the Texas Oklahoma border and the manager of the park walked around in the dark blowing a boat horn to alert us to seek shelter…I was running up and down the length of the coach trying to put all my worldly goods in my pocketbook…jewelry, photos, a spatula….go...

May 7, 2008 - Reno, Nevada

So I am driving along on my big bike and thinking to myself, “Elmer is not a good name for my bike”. I named her after the movie ‘Elmer Gantry but, as I just wrote, ’her’, thats how I feel about 'her' so I have renamed her 'Elsie'. Elsie is a strong name, a playful name and she can be quite naughty! So, Elsie and I are riding along down the 395 highway southbound through a large wide valley with snow covered mountains on either side. Elsie is a ‘cruiser’ if you know what I mean; ‘nudge, nudge – wink, wink – grin, grin’ and we are truckin’...

May 4, 2008 - Reno, NV

– Today we spent the day visiting Reno with Mike and Cindy Lake. Mike and Cindy just moved to Reno about 2 weeks ago! We were so happy that the timing worked out and we were able to spend some time with them. We saw their beautiful new home and love their location – Lake Tahoe is 30miles to the east and downtown Reno is 10mins. We walked around downtown Reno and through some of the Casinos, but we didn’t gamble – Bob and I didn’t want risk blowing the “nest egg” and getting “Lost in America”. Reno is much smaller than Las Vegas with older,...
