Apr 22, 2013 - Fernley, NV

Pulled all the way (35 miles) to Desert Rose RV Park last Thursday for a short stay with local camping friends. Great visiting, food, refreshments and cribbage. This was the first of 3 local short trips before heading out May 15 to the Oregon, Washington coasts then Idaho and Yellowstone in Montana before returning to Reno in mid to late August. Then we will get ready to head South for the winter...Arizona, Texas and who knows where else. Next trip is this Thursday to Gold Ranch in Verdi, NV just West of Reno. May 1 we go up to Virginia...

Jul 26, 2012 - Nevada & Lassen Volcanic NP

July 24-26: Drive across Nevada and Northern California to Lassen Volcanic NP The first day was an easy drive across northern Nevada on I-80 to Fernley, NV. We thought it was a pretty drive through wide open sage brush valleys with mountains on both sides of the highway. Beautiful blue skies. We spent the night in Fernley at Desert Rose RV Park. A nice RV Park, clean level concrete parking pads, a good place for overnight, or to stay a few nights if you want to visit Fernley. The second day was a pretty drive on US395 north of Reno & then...

May 13, 2012 - Rambling Through the Desert

Before we began our drive through sparsely-populated eastern Nevada, we made a two-day stop in Cedar City, Utah. Cedar City isn’t exactly on the tourist map but it was an easy stop off from the freeway before heading through Nevada. We parked at the Elks Lodge (no hookups) which was actually a convenient spot. We were within walking distance to the old section of the town. The library was across the street from the lodge (you know how we love libraries!) so we could check our mail and I could catch up on reading my “rag mags.” Adjacent to...

Sep 7, 2011 - Carson City, NV

Went to Carson City to see the Nevada State Museum and are we glad we did! Great place to see the history of Nevada and the Carson City Mint. There was an area that was very realistic of the mines in the area. The mint was interesting and the display of coins had Jay wishing he had more in his collection. Like so many of the museums that we have seen, they had an area devoted to the Native Americans of the area. We still marvel at the skill that they exhibit in beading and basket weaving. We then stopped at the Fandango Casino on our way to...

Sep 6, 2011 - Drive to Fernley, NV

We drove from Honey Lake, CA to Fernley, NV - 102 miles. The area looks and feels like AZ - hot and dry. Parked at Desert Rose RV Park and then went for lunch at the Black Bear Diner. Played $5 and came out with a profit of $6.14. Did some quick shopping at Walmart - only place we could find and now back to the RV, food put away and relaxing for the night.

Sep 2, 2011 - Last day of our trip!

Tuesday evening we arrived in Evanston, WY and were very pleasantly surprised. Evanston is an old railroad town along the historic Union Pacific path of the Transcontinental Railway as well as being on the old California emigrant trail. The town is very proud of their history and has preserved and restored much of it. We spent several hours cycling along the Bear River along which the emigrant path followed and the res tored roundhouse and rail depot. Wednesday evening we stopped in Wells, NV another historic town and visited a California...

Sep 30, 2010 - We gotta be somewhere!

We are now in Fernley, Nevada. It is not exactly a tourist destination. We are here because we have a buyer for Art’s mom’s condo and we needed to be someplace with a solid internet connection and a UPS Store. Fernley fit the bill and since we don’t have a home, we gotta be somewhere! We hope to close on the condo on Monday. We could have stayed in Reno or Sparks but we have realized that we are more comfortable in a small town. Fernley has a population of about 13,000 with a Walmart and one other grocery store and, of course, the...

Aug 16, 2010 - Fernley???...where the hell is Fernley?

We gave it up! We were almost in reach of Reno, Nevada but the number of miles driven in the wind and heat was enough...enough to find a place to stop for the night. We did not find a place in Lovelock, so we found Fernley has a rv park and we got the last space. Charlie got his wish to come true when we stopped at the Bonneville Salt Flats with Speed Week just getting started on 8/14. He got out to the start/finish line and watched some of the races.....color him a happy camper! And just before we got here, a rock hit the windshield...

Jun 16, 2010 - We're Baaaaaack!!!

06/16/10 Desert Rose RV Park, Fernley, NV I’m sure you think we dropped off the face of the earth, but since Las Vegas we haven’t had internet or cell service. We had a great time in Vegas…only had one night to explore but saw what we could. Went to Caesar’s Palace, saw the fountain show at Bellagio, and toasted Rich’s Mom at the Imperial Palace. No BIG winner, although Celeste walked away with $50+ and think Gary did OK too. Rich and I won and lost even steven. Oh, well, we still enjoyed the evening. Our drive to Sequoia was a long day,...

Jun 6, 2010 - Virginia City to Fernley, NV

Sunday morning + Casino Fandango = Champagne Brunch! What a delicious brunch it was! Crepes made to order at the crepe station, Belgian waffles, a variety of fruit, entrées, etc… Of course I stopped off and played a bit more poker and then a slot machine on the way out (I made back a little more than my $16 loss of last night so I’m happy) and then off to Virginia City. Virginia City, Nevada, is an interesting old town. The tourist info states, “The 19th century mining boom turned Virginia City into the most important settlement between...

Sep 29, 2009 - Fernley, NV

9-29-09 Jim woke up this morning with a stinging in his side. After his eyes were pried open he looked in the mirror to see a puffy red patch almost the size of his hand on his side where the yellow jacket nailed him last night. By the end of the day it started itching, but more Benadryl cream seems to help! Overall the day went by smoothly with little to no traffic on the roads. After lunch we started to encounter high winds along Hwy 395 in California that made us happy for the light traffic. How high were the winds? Gusts of 60 MPH...
