Sep 4, 2006 - Eastern Nevada

Ken & I spent the last week exploring Eastern Nevada. We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the area as well as the "attractions". We had initially planned on driving through the area and spending no more than a couple of days, we ended up spending 8 days covering a little over 400 miles!! Some of the highlights, Cathedral Grove State Park located between Panaca, Nevada ( population about 45 ) and Pioche, Nevada ( population about 200 & the county seat ). Nomadic Native Americans occupied the area as long ago as 10,000 BC. Panaca...

Jul 15, 2006 - Ely, Nevada

Welcome to our first stop on our new journey! We decided to bring our new home to Ely to share it with my parents & my sister. We also wanted to spend a little time with them as it will be six months or so before we will be back in this area to see them. We spent a few days at Mom & Dad's and then we moved our rig to the KOA campground here in Ely. It was ice & we met some new friends, but we were a little disappointed because we couldn't get Southern sky to try out our new satellite for TV & internet service! But.... Our son & daughter came...

Jul 6, 2006 - Austin to Ely, NV

What a way to wake up the old muscles, 850 vertical feet as we climbed out of Austin. Then, we rode up and down a series on mountains (some wet pavement too) with more climbs until we got to a fabulous basin, which was bisected by the straightest road we had ever seen. It was over 30 mils long, disappearing into another mountain range. We had four climbs. Combined with the headwinds, it made for big challenges today. It must be noted how dependent we are on our two "sag" wagon/vans. Without enough water and food (one section was 65 miles...

JD's Vacation 2006

May 1, 2006 - Trip east, Ely Nevada

Woke up to a good travel day, sun shining and warm. Headed south to pick up I 80 east. I looked at 50 toward Carson City, but Echo Summitt west of Tahoe is not a fun road. Coming down it is tight turns and sheer drop of the side, so I decided I 80 over Donner Pass was the best route. Plan to pick up 50 in Fallon Nevada for the rest of the trip. About 2 hrs out of Sacramento, a pickup with a contractor trailer loaded with junk passed me. Some piece of metal fell out of the trailer and bounced towards me. I couldn't avoid it and the front...

May 17, 2005 - From Susanville, CA to Ely, NV

Got up early, loaded up, then spent 45 min. wandering around Susanville looking for a PO box. Found one, then got on the road. We got fuel in Reno (and interesting place), then stopped in Fallon for groceries and deli sandwiches for lunch. Fallon is a Naval Air Station and also home of the "Top Gun" School. We saw a lot of jets taking off and coming in, they must have been practicing. From there, we took Nevada Route 50, the "loneliest road in the United States", and also the path of the original Pony Express. We passed several old way...
