Ash Meadows NWR is about 25 miles west of Pahrump close to the CA border. The refuge covers over 23,000 acres of spring-fed wetlands and alkaline desert. The sparkling blue waters of the reservoir, pools and streams were cool to the touch. It is home to the endangered pupfish. The pupfish eats both plant and animal material and can survive in less than one inch of water as warm as 90 degrees. They are about 1 inch long and the males are an iridescent brilliant blue.
