Wyoming 2018

Feb 10, 2018 - York

When we went for breakfast we took a look outside and it was dry. By the time we checked out it had started to rain and it was 19 f so it was freezing onto the vehicle. The road didn’t seem icy but we were happy to get off the interstate and headed north on 69. On the interstate they go 80 no matter the road conditions and then tailgate, no wonder there are such big crashes on some of the highways. We took 54 from Ft Scott and the rain stopped after an hour and it was great driving condtions. We skirted Wichita and headed north n 81....

Brenner2018

Nov 14, 2017 - York, Nebraska

We got started around 9:00 and got on the road about 10:00. It was a little cool and foggy this morning. But after an hour on the road the fog burned off to clear skies. Todays drive was all on I80 all the way to York, Nebraska. There isn't really anything to talk about. Going across Nebraska along the interstate just about the only thing to see is cornfields and flocks of geese. We were able to do some geocaching at one of the rest areas we stop at to walk around and stretch. We found both of them with very little trouble. Both of the...

Oct 3, 2016 - Cornfields and wind

This morning we got on the road a little earlier than normal. The cold front coming down from Canada was getting closer and it was going to cause some heavy rains and high winds for the area around Ogallala and North Platte. We got on the road at 8:30 and headed down I80. We stayed ahead of the storms but the wind caught us. Most of the day we had a head wind. We averaged about 9 mpg where normally we would be getting 12 to 14 mpg. Going across this part of Nebraska there is all corn fields and flat land. Nothing to stop the wind. We...

Sep 30, 2013 - SD to York, NE

Sunday: We left Gavin's Point Dam at about 12:23. Good old US81 was a bit bumpy for a ways south of Yankton, but then it smoothed out. We had a wind almost all of the way. We parked at the WalMart in York, NE, about 3:23 so it was a short trip. Wallyworld was noisy but it has calmed down as I write this at a bit after 8 pm. Ron is already in bed, but I wanted to get our Yanton blog up. After sitting for a bit we went into Wallyworld and did some shopping. I bought a whole cooked chicken so I can make some chicken soup. But I'll have to go...

Summer 2013 Travels

Jul 19, 2012 - Laramie WY To York, NE

In an effort to try and get the trip journal up to date I’m typing the Thursday update as we’re driving on Friday. It’s very sunny today without a cloud in the sky and it’s a bit difficult to see the screen. I’m writing the journal entry on my laptop in Word and I’ll copy it onto the web site when we’re somewhere with consistent cell service. We seem to start driving later every day. Today (Thursday) we didn’t head out of Laramie until a bit after 10:30am. We spent more time at the motel breakfast due to the extended offerings, Laura even...

Baltimore Or Bust

Oct 7, 2011 - North Platte to York,NE

We did a short drive from North Platte to York,Nebraska in order to relax at one of our favorite retreats in the midst of corn country-The Oasis RV Park just outside of York. Corn fields and scenic farms surround the park. It is a quite peaceful and small. We drive into York to the Super Walmart and dine at Chances R Restaurant in York. Some of the best beef in Nebraska is here. It is excellent home cooking and of course has excellent pies and cakes-all home made. One gets hungry wrestling the coach through the interstate traffic.

TRIP OFA LIFETIME IV

Aug 2, 2011 - Davenport to York, Nebraska

The heartland of America. What an inspiration it is to drive across the "fruited plains". The rolling hills of Iowa with vistas of silos and barns-a thing of the past? I hope not! These are the farmlands that feed us. These are the farmlands that supply ethanol and lower our dependence on foreign oil fields. As I look across a massive cornfield tonight I see an old fashioned windmill spinning and I dream of what was and what is to be. We face so many complexities but let the past and our forefathers be the guide-we have it in us to overcome...

TRIP OFA LIFETIME IV

Aug 1, 2011 - York

Hi, Ok... so I didn't write yesterday. Here are some highlights: We saw a semi-truck in a ditch due to the winds blowing hard, we drove 11.5 hours, we saw 3 Maine License Plates and all we saw was hills. I was so hot! We had a head advisory yesterday and today. The temps reached well over 100 degrees. We stopped early yesterday at 3:00pm for the dogs. We stayed in a Sleep Inn, the one we stayed in a couple years back. Unfortunately, we didn't get the suite we wanted. They changed the rules. Now dogs (and owners) have to stay in a smoking...

Apr 23, 2009 - Day 3

Today was a travel day and we were in the van all day headed due north to York, NE. It is very dry around here and we saw the large smoke plumes from a few wildfires in the distance There was a thunderstorm in OK Thursday afternoon/evening, but we had to position ourselves in the area most favorable for severe storm formation which took us to NE. We went to a great steak house (Chances R) in York and had a fantastic meal and joined up with the mechanic crew for the SRV who drove in from Michigan. At our weather briefing last night we...
