Oct 13, 2007 - Chimney Rock Nebraska

We stayed in a campground less than a mile from Chimney Rock last night. We were the only ones there and we could see Chimney Rock right out our front window. Something like a lakeside cabin. In the morning the Rock was gone; not stolen off of its base but covered by fog. Chimney Rock is just 22 miles east of Scott's Bluff. There is a great visitor center near the Rock. The Rock was a significant landmark on the Oregon trail, marking the completion of one third of the trip. Ezra Meeker, the man who made the trip in reverse in 1906, is also...

Fall 2007 Going West

Aug 28, 2007 - Valentine, Nebraska

Not much to report today as it is a travel day. We find a clinic in Hot Springs where John gets his regular lab work done. We head south on 385 then east, yes east, on Route 20. We could jump on the interstate but if the roads are good we prefer state roads. Route 20 has a little construction but over all it is good. We see the different ranches, go through a few small towns and have yellow wildflowers along the road. They look like Black-Eyed-Susans. We don't see a lot of wildlife but it is a relaxing drive and we don't overdo it.

Aug 27, 2007 - Birthday Boy

TIME FLIES, WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUNToday is Donald's 58th birthday. It was just another day with no celebration, etc. Unfortunately, Donald's family did not celebrate birthdays much when he was growing up, and it's something he really missed. GETTING CLOSER TO HOMEWe drove US Hwy 212 south from Garryowen, MT, to Spearfish, SD, and it is an awesome road, one of our favorites. It's just a two-lane road thru much of the last part of MT, a small corner of WY, and then into SD. We saw lots of antelope and the beautiful Black Hills country. It was...

Apr 28, 2007 - Valentine, NE

Another 400 mile day. We were able to get going quicker and got in earlier. I was surprised by the sandhills of northern Nebraska. We have never been in this area and it is starkly beautiful. We drove up and down the hills on long straight road with little traffic. When we got to Valentine, we went to a very small campground behind a motel. The entire campground was empty and we could have any of the sites. We nearly had a disaster driving in as the trees are in all of the wrong places. I nearly drove the upper right rear of our new bus...

Jun 4, 2006 - North to Valentine

After church services and good-byes, we loaded up and headed north across Nebraska to Valentine, where we stopped for the nite at the Wacky West RV Park. We took a drive to the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. There we saw a small herd of elk and lots of prarie dogs. Janet wanted to bring one home, I said NO! We had a nice dinner at the Bunkhouse Resturant and then settled in for the night. Tomorrow we'll be home - South Dakota. Check it out......
