Oct 24, 2017 - Cast off anchor!

The great adventure - our first season as snowbirds - starts with a simple goal: purchase and install a remote braking system for our "Toad" -- the 2005 Mini Cooper convertible. We left home on Sunday, Oct 22, and had an easy drive to Pender, Nebraska where we settled in to the Blue Ox RV Park. Work on the PATRIOT II braking system was completed Monday, but the fierce Nebraska winds had us delay our plans to head east to central Iowa on Tuesday. Instead we stayed an additional day and toured the area, with an eye toward the many "barn...

Oct 26, 2016 - A reunion with friends in Pender, NE

10-26-16 A reunion In Pender Was slow getting up today. No driving planned so we had coffee and read the paper (online). Visited with Mac and Rose again and talked about everything. They are waiting for the custom work to be completed on the Mini. Seems there was excitement in town, (Pender is very small, only a 1,000 folks), an armed robbery! They haven’t had one here in over 10 years. It was the buzz all over town. Since I knew we would be meeting with Mac and Rose in Pender, I brought my Blue Ox tow bar (all the way from Alaska), to...

Oct 25, 2016 - A shake down cruise to Nebraska

10-25-16 A shakedown cruise to Nebraska Today is the first semi-long road trip for the Grey Wolf 22RR. We are meeting some friends in Pender, Nebraska, home of Blue Ox Industries. Blue Ox makes tow bars, hitching equipment, and base plates for folks who like to tow vehicles behind their motorhomes. The trip was windy and the day was overcast. The trailer behaved, but we kept speeds down to 60 mph max. We arrived in Pender and found the Blue Ox quickly. They have a very nice RV park and the rates are VERY reasonable. We had a reunion with...

Aug 23, 2016 - Blue Ox

Stopped at Blue Ox, the manufacturer of the tow bar that I use for my car just to have the tow bar serviced - they take it apart, check the tolerances, clean it, grease it, put in new neoprene washers etc. They have a very nice RV park as part of their service, full hook ups and its free. I also needed to have my bank send me a new debit card so I stayed here extra nights and communed with the cornfields while I waited.

2016 Summer Trip

Oct 10, 2015 - Blue Ox

Today we rolled through the hills and farmlands of Southern South Dakota and Northern Nebraska to the small farming community of Pender. This home of Blue Ox, manufacturer of RV accessories like tow bars, steering stabilizers, brake assists for towed vehicles, etc. Blue Ox has a full service campground for its customers and a great welcome and visitors center right in the RV park. They serviced our tow bar and changed out the rock guard we used between the MH and the CRV this summer in Alaska. Since the mesh on the rock guard is a plastic...

Apr 27, 2014 - Blue Ox

Today as we traveled further west in Iowa, we began to see the relatively flat terrain begin to give way to rolling hills as we approached the Missouri River. As we crossed the river, the hills were even a bit more pronounced on the Nebraska side. We stopped at the Lewis & Clark State Park just before leaving Iowa but it was closed. We wanted to see the exhibit of the keel boat similar to the one used by Lewis & Clark, but it was out of the water. Parks and outdoor exhibits really don't open in the upper Midwest until at least May 1 or...

Jun 8, 2011 - Across the Rockies to Pender, NE

Our time in the west has run out and it is time to start for New York. We are coming home by way of I-70. Traveling this interstate will take us to altitudes of over 10,600 feet but through some of the most beautiful scenery of our whole trip. June 3rd - Our first day has taken us into Utah and then onto I-70 and over at least three passes of over 7800 feet to spend our first night in Green River, Utah. The melting mountain snow of the Rockies has caused the rivers to flood and we have seen the result as we cross the Green River and to our...

Mar 30, 2011 - Pender, Nebraska - Home of Blue Ox

Why Pender, Nebraska or what is Blue Ox you may be wondering. Pender is the home of Blue Ox, manufacturer of tow bars for motorhomes. We have had a Blue Ox towbar on our motorhome since it was new, in fact we are on our second hitch. We want to take a tour of the factory and customers may use the Blue Ox facilities when in the area. So see, membership does have its privileges! Since this is a rural locale, we enjoyed seeing a beautiful pheasant strut across the road in front of our site this morning. We are going to take a tour of the...

Sep 21, 2010 - Crossing the Plains

After leaving the Des Moines area, we drove north to Humboldt. The purpose of our stop there was to visit the grave site Clark's parents and brother. I've made the comment that I've never seen so many Lovriens in the same place - the cemetery is full of Lovriens and we made a point of finding them all. We spent one night in the little community park and then continued on our way west. Our next goal was Pender, NE. This little town is the home of Blue Ox, manufacturer of our tow equipment. We just wanted to stop to make sure everything was...

Aug 20, 2010 - Guess what greeted us this morning?

Ugh, it was humidity! oh, my goodness! it was there, in our face when we opened the door. We like the land of 15-20 percent humidity! We gathered our mail in Madison, got on the road and arrived in Pender, Nebraska, about 1:30. Blue Ox refurbished the tow bar: replaced some bushings, lubricated the arms, replaced the rubber dust covers over the arms, and provided new hitch pins, all for $25. A great deal. Blue Ox also has a very nice rv park at their factory. An overnight stay is included with the factory once-over. The park has full hook...

Jun 27, 2010 - Pender, NE

Sun, Jun 27: We drove from Valentine in north central Nebraska (did you know that Cherry County Nebraska, pop. 6,000, is larger then Connecticut?) to Pender in north east Nebraska today. The trip was uneventful with a 45-minute lunch stop at the WalMart parking lot in Norfolk. We traveled exclusively on Federal (US 20 & US 275) and state NE 51 & NE 9) highways, and it was very pleasant cruising through the rolling farmland of America's Heartland in our comfy bus. We are parked for the nite at the Blue Ox RV park, adjacent to the Blue Ox...

Oct 25, 2009 - Tired of the Prairie

Nebraska? Corn, corn and small towns. We stayed last night at the campground for the Blue Ox Corporation. Blue Ox is a manufacturer of tow bars for RVers. The campground was free for Escapees 9which we are) and Blue Ox owners (which we aren't). There were full hookups which was nice for the cold night. In the morning a Blue Ox rep came around in a golf cart asking the people there what they could do for them. Although we don't have that brand of tow bar he was very nice and said we could stay as long as we liked. Bill decided to buy rubber...
