Sep 6, 2018 - The pursuit continues

McCook, NE Although the parks and passport locations are far apart because of the few people living in this part of the state, we have enjoyed participating in both the Great Park Pursuit and the Passport program as it leads us to businesses or places previously undiscovered. Today we found another gem. The Petrified Wood Gallery in Ogallala is a showcase of art created from ancient petrified woods and fossils from around the world. The collection is a result of the efforts of brothers Howard and Harvey Kenfield. Born in 1928, the twins...

Sep 28, 2015 - Trails and total eclipse of the moon

We had a good visit with Chuck and Dian and Dick and Ann. They are all so very busy it was great they found time to fit us in. We arrived on Sunday in the afternoon and set up at the airport next to Lifeflight. They have a kingaire that may wake us up it it takes off. We all went to The Loop for dinner - Chuck and Dian were coming back from visiting Cindi in Grand Island (3 hours each way) and had been involved in the McCook heritage days the day before - then they go to work on Monday. Dick and Ann were involved in his 60th high school...

Jun 11, 2014 - Park Pursuit

McCook, NE Today we are 144 miles further down the road and needed only 6 hours to accomplish that. In addition to the Passport program, Nebraska has the Great Park Pursuit. Each year 20 locations are selected - they may be state parks or city parks. The sites are spread across the state. At each location one locates a post with a plate on it, takes a rubbing of the image, and sends the rubbing in. Unfortunately the park personnel have been quite devious this year in the placement of some of the posts and even the famous trail blazer Dan'l...

Rail Days 2014

Jul 19, 2013 - McCook Trails

We had a long drive from Gypsum, past the Idaho Springs tunnel construction. We were on the east side of the interstate, thank goodness, as the west bound was all backed up. We then drove on Hwy 34 after Ft. Morgan and picked up a whole lot of new road construction loose sand. It was raining and that may have helped or may have put more dirt and sand on us. The rain stopped at the Nebraska border and we dragged into the McCook airport about 5:30. Our cousins were impatiently waiting for us - I think they eat earlier than we do. We went to a...

Jun 21, 2012 - McCook NE - Karrer Park

Next stop turned out to be the city campground in McCook NE. Woke up the last day in the campground to find a deer behind our camper. Course, Bridget saw it first, but she kept pretty quiet and it stayed quite a while. Took a trip out to Parks NE to visit the winery there. Talk about a remote location, this one surely is. Maybe that's why we never visited Parks before! Hal and Carol who run the winery have a very nice set up out there. One can even spend the night at the winery, too. They've fixed a room to rent out over the tasting room...

Retired at Last!

Jun 15, 2011 - Relax

15 June Today is the first day of summer. What the heck is summer in Texas like? I’ve been in the heat in spring. I made my way up to Liberal, Kansas yesterday. A tad bit cooler, yet overnight it got down right cold. I was asleep and only in boxers under a flannel sheet and I had to close the roof vent and get out my comforter! Also heard a little bit of rain. Yea. Today I’ve gotten up to just north of McCook, Nebraska. Nice state rec. area. I’m here for two nights to rest up. I’ve been on the road for the last 6 days. I need to do some...

Knomad in America

May 16, 2011 - Another 400+ miles, now in McCook, NE

Another early morning departure and certainly what we both really enjoy. We were underway shortly after 7:00 a.m. - first stop; get diesel! Ouch! $4.09/gallon! We continued driving northward out of Texas, into Oklahoma, then through Kansas and even went by Garden City! And of course everyone knows this is Dorothy and Toto's home from the "Wizard of Oz" I'm sure! And finally reached Nebraska, our third panhandle state of the day! The weather was cooperative, chilly in the morning, but the sun was out and it was very pleasant when we...

Oct 27, 2010 - Blowing into McCook, Nebraska

You know, when you are pulling a trailer down the road and your truck is hugging the center strip and the back end of the trailer is sticking over the right side of the lane because of a crosswind. It is time to find a place to stop. We moved out today and tried to make it to North Platte, Nebraska. Most of the day we headed into the wind and did alright until we turned north on Hwy 83. The wind was blowing around 20 to 30 mph out of the west. We were doing OK until we crossed over the Nebraska line. Then the wind picked up and it was...

Aug 14, 2007 - Kansas City to McCook, NE

We had a short but very nice visit in Manhattan, KS with Harry and Penny Bellman. They were busy as usual, but it's nice to visit. We are looking forward to them coming to Panama City in November. Our travels then took us to McCook, NE to see Briana and Kaileigh. Kailiegh is not even two yet and sings every song any young child would, and then some. says her abc's and counts to 10. She is very fun to be around and loves to help.... in her own way. She is good at "no later" when she doesn't want to do something. Papa John can't be far awawy...

Bellmans' Travels

Oct 13, 2006 - Kansas and Nebraska

Kansas and Nebraska Boy what can we say about Kansas and Nebraska. Not much. The Fontana's and the Evans just drove through Kansas with one stop in Russell overnight and then on to Colby Kansas and a sharp turn north to head into Nebraska so we could add that state to our map. The Fine's stopped in Abilene to visit the Eisenhower library and then they drove straight through to Colorado. We can know see why everyone says that you only have to drive through there once. It was very flat and the road went on for miles and miles. No wonder they...
