Dec 16, 2019 - Just A Little Detour

Before we get into Monday the 16th very far, I should clarify a couple of items. First, unlike our four previous driving years since we sold the motor home, we were not taking the more direct route, crossing the border at Laredo, TX, this year. We had come to really appreciate the Texas route since it saved us 1 1/2 days of driving and probably 700 miles, it had those great outlet malls at San Marcos that at least one of us really loved, it had that great Czech bakery with those excellent kraut rolls, not to speak of a very easy border...

Jun 27, 2014 - Buffalo Bill Cody

Lexington, NE Once again in Nebraska we have resumed our quest for stamps in the Passport program. We stopped at a diner, a museum, a business office, a quilt shop, a restaurant, and the North Platte train yards. The major attraction of the day, however, was a stop at Buffalo Bill Cody’s Scouts Rest Ranch. No one figure personifies the frontier spirit better than William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, the West’s most colorful showman, army scout and buffalo hunter. Cody’s elegant Victorian house, built in 1886, and huge barn sits on 258 acres. The...

Rail Days 2014

Jun 10, 2014 - Passports

Lexington, NE As is usual for us, we were off at the crack of dawn - about 9 am this time. This was, however, a false sunrise as the master planner still had to drop off some mail at the post office, get petrol, and grab some cash. We hit the road headed in the right direction around 9:15. The Nebraska Tourism Commission sponsors a program designed to take one all over the state. There are 80 designated stops strung out from one end of the state to the other. One has a "passport" that one gets stamped at the attraction. Getting a minimum...

Rail Days 2014

Oct 9, 2012 - They Call Themselves "Cornhuskers"

Today was mostly cloudy although the sun came out for the last hour of the drive (just so I had to stare directly at it). I left Iowa about 10:00 am and rode 651 kilometres on mostly straight, mostly flat I-80. I quit about 5:30 when I found a Walmart. (It already had 2 RV's in the lot.) Not much to report today. I hope to get to Wyoming tomorrow and the scenery should be much more interesting there. Cheers.

Jul 9, 2008 - Lexington, NE

We drove from Missouri through corners of Kansas and Iowa, then across Nebraska to Lexington where we are spending the night. We covered a lot of miles today so we will have more time for Chimney Rock, the sand dunes and Carhenge tomorrow. We were treated to a spectacular display of lightning this evening -- we have never seen anything like it. On a more miniature scale, fireflies put on a show for us too. The girls were intrigued by the group of teens who apparently were having a tail-gate party with beer on the main drag of Grand Island,...
