Jul 2, 2018 - Day 25

Day 25 20180702 1245-1930 315 miles Today was Marty’s birthday so Kathy plans on wishing her a happy birthday every time she calls. Marty tends to call numerous times a day just to talk. We got a late start waiting for the truck to be ready. The management of the KOA was wonderful! They waived the late checkout fee due to vehicle breakdown. We rode the Bergman to pick up the truck. Kurt drove the truck back while Kathy had the pleasure of the bike. Since we knew we would be heading out when we returned, we had everything ready to go. We...

Sep 13, 2017 - Day 1 – Home to Nebraska.

Good day for traveling – a bit hot but not windy. Enjoyed the scenery: corn, more corn, soybeans, more corn. Reminded me of my granddaughter Meghan’s comment when reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma – I didn’t know you could write so much about corn. Stopped for the night at a very pretty state park east of Kearney. Windmill State Recreation campground had lots of trees and grass and there was almost no one there. Sites are spaced very far apart with lots of room to roam (not that we did since we were pretty tired).

Aug 16, 2017 - Dinner at the Linot’s

Dinner at the Linot’s We joined Martha and Jim Moelenberndt, Rich and Carol Deardorff for dinner at Karen and Mike Linot's home in Gibbon, Nebraska, about 26 miles west of Grand Island. Their property is on rolling hills and has a wonderful view of their 20 acre back yard. Their nearest neighbor is in the next section. We dined on delicious elk steak, a first for me. Karen knows my affinity for peach cobbler so she made enough for all plus some for me to take on the road. The cobbler was combined with a scoop of Dearforff-made vanilla ice...

Jul 25, 2013 - Gibbon NE - Windmill SRA

Hopped back on the Nebraska wine trail to finish up getting all the wineries and tasting rooms on the trail. It sure is costing us a lot of money to get $75 in "wine bucks". Don't think we'll do the wine tour next year. We'll just get some Nebraska wine at one or two of our favorite places and call it good. Went to Miletta Vista, George Spencer Tasting room and Cedar Hills while at Gibbon. Miletta Vista has reopened after last year's fire. They really increased the size of their tasting room when they rebuilt. Cedar Hills is for sale, which...

Retired at Last!

Jun 28, 2012 - Gibbon NE - Windmill SRA

Spent 2 nights at one of our favorite Nebraska campgrounds. The park there is very well taken care of with lots of grass and big campsites. No matter which site you pick, there is plenty of room between you and your neighbor. The roads are good for biking, too. You can swim in the lake if you want to but the swimmers there when we were said it was so hot the water was like bathwater. Bridget occupied herself by watching the gopher holes to see if one would stick his head out. Visited the wineries in Lexington and Ravenna while we were at...

May 21, 2010 - Kearny, Nebraska

May 21 Kearny Nebraska Ft. Kearny State Recreational Area This is our first time in Nebraska. Through the miles and miles of flat land we didn’t see many exciting features but did stay at a nice park called Fort Kearny State Recreational Area. The area had seven lakes if you call them that. You could throw a stone across and hit land in any direction. We were able to go for a little hike down an old railroad bed. It was good to get out and stretch our legs some. The weather was nice and we did sit outside for a while to soak up some sun....

Mar 10, 2009 - The Wind Is Crimping our Style Crazy day

We woke up to a frozen camper inside and out. The ground was covered in a light layer of snow and ice . Crystalized flakes were flying in the air and it was a whopping 4 degrees. We had no water. Everything was frozen , the windows the doors. The wind was blowing 55 + mph. It was crazy. We could barely get out of our door because of the wind. It was bitter cold yet Eric walked over to Cabellas for us to have some coffee. He was frozen when he got back. And to top it off the coffee wasnt even that good. OF COURSE we had to warm it back up...
