Sep 26, 2016 - Gering, NE - Robidoux RV Park

Our trip from Custer State Park to Gering, NE was conducted under foggy, rainy skies for almost the entire distance which greatly restricted the number and quality of our road pictures. It was much more hilly than expected when you hear of the high plains. We are staying at the Robidoux RV Park which is a very nice city park with much larger than normal sites. We have a concrete pad with landscaping, 50 amp full hookups, great Verizon and a clear view of the satellites. We didn't do anything over the weekend except feed our addiction to...

Sep 17, 2015 - Deer and Antelope Play

All my life I have sang "where the deer and the antelope play". Where the heck is that? Well, today we found it. I saw deer and antelope in Wyoming. That's where the deer and the antelope play. -- We had a spectacular sunrise this morning. The wind practically blew our slide away last night. We even closed it for a bit to keep the awnings from tearing. But this morning, the wind was gone. The skies were black with the threat of rain, so we hightailed it out of Casper and headed southeast again. -- We traveled for a bit on Interstate 25,...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Jul 10, 2014 - Wildcat Hills Nature Center

The one thing I love about traveling to new states and places is that you never know what you are going to find. We passed a sign telling us about the Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area on our drive to Nebraska. We decided to go back and check it out today. We are so glad we did. It is a wonderful place for bird watchers. They have huge feeders set up in the back of the building for viewing birds. In just a few minutes we saw a ton of birds. Some we had not seen in ages and one was even a new bird on my birding list. It is a wowser place...

Jul 9, 2014 - Gering & Runza Burgers

We had another great day exploring downtown Gering, Nebraska. Gering is known for Scotts Bluff National Monument as well as the famous Oregon Trail Days annual celebration. Our goal today was to visit the Runza Restaurant and try one of the famous Runza sandwiches. We didn’t know what we would think about this unusual burger until we tried one, it was delicious. This special Nebraska sandwich all started in 1949 with the Original Runza® Sandwich. Homemade dough made from scratch everyday — stuffed full of ground beef, onions, cabbage, and...

May 18, 2014 - Gering, NE

We leave North Platte. We are back on Route 30. We parallel the trains. Lake McConaughy is in Ogallala. We take the northern route around the lake. We stop at the dam to take pictures. It is still chilly! It is an easy run to Gering. We call ahead. There are only three sites left. I am very surprised. We gain an hour today. We put it to good use. We get the motorcycle out and head to Scottsbluff National Monument. After checking in at the visitor center, we head to the top of the bluff. The ride to the top takes us through three tunnels....

Aug 12, 2013 - Gering, NE

Today’s journey took us past Laramie and Cheyenne, two historical western towns, along Interstate-80. Along the highway were more rolling hills, more Pronghorn, more oil derricks and railroad with loads of coal. At Cheyenne we exited the interstate and took to the small roads again, our preference, through farmland and fields of sunflowers. We began to see sandstone cliffs and saw that we were approaching Scottsbluff National Monument in the panhandle of Nebraska, remnants of an ancient high plains. The Nebraska welcome sign says Home of...

Jul 18, 2012 - and now NE

Today started even earlier than yesterday, but only by about 30 min. We left Seibert, CO about 8:30. Drove over to Burlington, CO to fill up with gas because the GPS indicated there was a Shell station there, NOT!!!, so we had to gas up at CONOCO at $3.60/gal. After recovering from the shock, we completed the sell then made our way cross country to Sidney, NE where we stopped for lunch and, of course, a brief walk around Walmart. Back in “G/G” we again drove through the country side and back roads on the way to Gering, NE. On the way...

Jul 11, 2012 - Gering, Nebraska

What a beautiful country. Came over some roads today that gave spectacular views of the mountains ranges, farm land, and you could see what seemed like forever. We arrived at Rubidoux RV Park, Gering, Nebraska. Only took the wrong turn once today, ended up on a road to a carnival that was setting up. Thought it was the entrance to the RV Park, whoops, didn't see the ditch between the road and the campground. Saw 18 wheelers up the path that the carnival was unloading and decided that would be a good place to turn around. Thank God, it...

Hither 'N' Yon 2012

Apr 30, 2012 - To Gering, NE

It is foggy! I feel like I am at the shore. We do not rush. We want the fog to lift before we get on the road. It does. From North Platte we continue west on Route 30. We again follow the railroad. In Sutherland, we cross into The Mountain Time Zone. In Ogallala we leave Route 30 and head northwest on Route 26. We get some great views of Lake McConaughy. We are on the Western Trails Byway. This is definitely Oregon Trail country as we now follow the Platte River. We see a sign for Windlass Hill Historic Site. Let's stop. We take pictures...

Oct 6, 2011 - Weather

This was our big change in the weather day...it had been hot dry and gorgeous but then suddenly the weather changed and got a bit cooler, the wind picked up then this dust storm hit on Thursday. There was a tornado warning a few miles away and a severe thunder storm/hail warning here. Thankfully we got none of that but the wind was alarmingly strong and a bit scary. We are after all, living in a tin box out here on the prairies!
