Oct 9, 2013 - OTRA - NE -Chappell

Another easy drive along totally uncrowded roads south to Chappell Nebraska. The roads were clear and the snow slowly disappeared the further south we drove. Today's route took us south on NE-87 and eventually back onto US-385 and after that it was a left turn onto US-30 to Chappell. We had a little trouble finding the RV park because Mapquest had us turning on a road that didn't exist but we finally pulled in around 3:00, a drive of 184 miles. The corn is still standing in this part of the country but now we've added sugar beets to our...

Sep 7, 2011 - Almost out of NE

We left Custer about 8:30 and followed US 385 out of the hills. We stopped for gas just outside of Hot Springs and lunch in Bridgeport, NE. Just north of Bridgeport we came upon train after train of Gillette coal. A man we talked to said that this is the distribution point for it to go south or east to the coal fired electrical plants. A train goes thru about every 20 minutes. We really liked US 385. Some places it is 4 lane but even the 2 lane isn't bad. Traffic is light and we made good time. We pulled in the Creekside RV in Chappell...

Summer 2011 Travels

Aug 12, 2009 - Almost there

On Aug. 11, we woke up and started driving. I don't think I've mentioned that the first place we're trying to get to is Wyoming. While there, we hope to see Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, and do some cowboy things. We found out that President Obama is following us and will be at Yellowstone on the 15th, wo we decided to go to Cody, WY first and spend a couple of days there to avoid the extra crowds. We were able to make reservations at a campground in Cody for the 13th. So we have one more day of traveling (I think). Today we...

The Gilbarte Gang

Aug 12, 2009 - A Day to Regroup and Rest

Our bodies still haven't adjusted to the time change, so the kids were awake at 6:00 this morning which is early for them. We woke up to find that we are the only ones in the campground except for the people that work here. It's really just a place off the highway to stay without any real attractions. We're glad we decided to take a day off. Ray and the boys went and played a round of golf at a course across the road from us, Brittany spent a lot of the day reading, and I was able to give the RV a thorough cleaning, reorganize, and catch...

The Gilbarte Gang

Jun 30, 2008 - Chappell, Nebraska.

We left Hermosa about 9:30 yesterday morning and arrived here about 2:30 in the afternoon. The trip was uneventful, but very pretty. There were a lot more mountains and valleys to drive through. I was able to get a couple of pictures, but did most of the driving so couldn't keep taking pictures. I haven't mastered that yet. Let me start out by saying this campground is one of the least desirable campgrounds we have been in. It is basicly just a field with some hook-ups. Kind of run down and the people who run it are friendly, but not so...
