Jun 12, 2014 - Bellevue, NE

We left The Country View RV Park at 9:10 heading for Omaha, NE. We had very clear weather and gentle wind. The archway shown is a commemorative monument to the nations westward migration. Nebraska grows a lot of corn which you see for miles and miles. The state is very green so it does not get boring. We arrived at the campground of our choice to find that it was full. So back to the Trailer Life we found a city park in Bellevue just a few miles away along the Missouri River. It had 127 campsites and was a very nice park. More and more...

May 7, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - Lauritzen Gardens

(Ron Writing) Today we went to visit Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha’s botanical center. Lauritzen has a nice visitor center with a large gift shop and the ConAgra Cafe serves lunch at very affordable prices. We had a delicious open face turkey breast sandwich with mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn, plus a drink for only $6. There is also a small indoor display of tropical flowers set in a Polynesian setting but most of the plants and flowers are in the 20 outdoor gardens, each with a different theme. It is really too early in the spring for most...

May 6, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - Exploring More of Omaha

(Ron Writing) This morning we set off to explore more of the sights in and around the downtown area of Omaha. Omaha is one of the nicer cities we’ve visited. There are so many large beautiful parks around the city and many interesting things to see and do. The city is very hilly and in some places we felt like we were in San Francisco. There are many older neighborhoods that are nicely restored and as you drive around, we just get the feeling that this would be a very nice place to live – then we think about the cold winters and the hot...

May 5, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - Holy Family Shrine

(Ron Writing) Today we drove a few miles west of Bellevue, NE to the town of Gretna, NE to see the Holy Family Shrine. A group of Catholic laypeople were inspired to build this shrine as a sort of refuge and renewal center. It was carefully planned with all features relating to the Biblical Word. The shrine occupies a 23-acre site overlooking the Platte River Valley to the east and I-80 to the west. The views from the chapel extend for miles and miles to the west, north, and east. There is also a small visitors center that is very nicely...

May 4, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - A Relaxing Day

We had a very relaxing day which is just what we needed after being on the go so much the past few days. The weather was quite nice so we took a long walk around this very large park and campground this afternoon. We’re right along the Missouri River and there is a walking trail along the river so we walked along the river for some distance. We talked to an 85 year old gentleman that was sitting along the river on a park bench taking a break from his bicycle ride. He told us that years ago there were all sorts of nice restaurants, clubs,...

May 3, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - Berkshire Hathaway's Shareholder Meeting

(Ron Writing) We got up early this morning, enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, a quick breakfast, and then headed to the Century Link Center in downtown Omaha for the annual shareholders meeting of Berkshire Hathaway Co (B-H). This has been on my “bucket list” for quite a few years and this year it just worked out that we were in the right place at the right time to check this one off the list. I’ve been an amateur investor since the mid 1970’s and, like most investors, have long admired the skill of Warren Buffett. If the world of investors had...

May 2, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - Boys Town Tour

(Ron Writing) We had real nice weather today and decided to get out and explore a little of the Omaha area. We spent most of the day touring Boys Town, Nebraska. I can remember how we received solicitations, Christmas stamps, and calendars from them every year when I was a kid. I guess Mom made donations to them and I can remember those sad photos of homeless neglected boys and thinking how good I had it in a home with two loving parents. The tour of Boys Town was very interesting and we’d highly recommend it if you are in the Omaha area....

May 1, 2014 - Bellevue, NE - Short Drive to the Omaha Area

(Ron Writing) I don’t think we’ve ever had so many days of nasty weather in succession in all our years of full-timing. Once again this morning it was cold and very windy when we left Beatrice. We headed north on US-77 to Lincoln, NE and then east on I-80 to the Omaha, NE area. It was a pretty short day of driving but we left kind of late and arrived in Bellevue, NE (just south of Omaha) by mid-afternoon. Here it was much less windy and the forecast is for better weather the next few days. We are staying at a nice large city park right...

Jul 31, 2013 - Our time in Nebraska

We arrived and was happy to see John and Gwen ... had to wait until Thursday to see Aaron since he was at the church's camp, Carol Joy Holling Camp, Conference and Retreat Center in Ashland. We was able to go to the closing ceremony on Thursday and he was surprised because Gwen and John had not told him the exact date of our arrival. The ceremonies was nice and we could tell Aaron had enjoyed himself. We had the chance to take Aaron shopping for school supplies and clothes. We spend everyday with Aaron and it was such fun. Our friend,...

Jul 23, 2013 - Travel day - Arnolds Park, IA to Bellevue, NE

Dick came over to bid us farewell as we were preparing ourselves and the coach for the road. What a pleasant surprise! The travel day was ok ..... the only road we traveled on today that wasn't the best was US 18 from US 71 to IA 60. Dry roads and no winds added to having a fairly good travel day. We arrived safely and the camp host for Offutt's FamCamp had assigned us our favorite site here, thanks Sam. Until the next posting .... have fun and stay safe! God Bless Ken and Fran

2013 - Here we come

Jan 1, 2013 - Catching up.

I have been saying now for almost two years that I wanted to get started writing in our travel journal again. So right now I am going to try and give a synopsis of that last two years. We continue to spend our winters down on South Padre Island, and we enjoy being there with so many friends and family; because it is usually one of the warmest places during the winter, we enjoy visits as well. Judi, Greg and family, Patrick, Tina and family, Sara, Lyn, Kim, and Greg, Lori and Dave and others! June of 2011 we took a trip to Nappanee,...

Sep 10, 2012 - Anticipation

Grandpa left us a sizable chunk of money, and my first thought was that rather buy a lot of things with it, I'd like us to have a really memorable experience together. I originally thought of going to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, but I think I was the only one who had any real enthusiasm for that idea. I've also dreamed of going to Hawaii most of my life, but the time doesn't seem right for that either (maybe a 25th anniversary trip?) A roommate from BYU, Penny Evans, was from Canada and I remembered her talking about her family's...
